Violence between israelis and palestinians is stunning in cairo. Reports of rocket fire out of gaza hitting central and southern israel broke a week along truce of fighting. It targeted tel avivs International Airport and israel has been hitting back with airstrikes throughout the gaza strip. Palestinians said two were killed and more than 20 wounded in separate attacks. Todays violence broke out hours before the latest ceasefire on the ground was due to ex fire. A blow to the egyptian efforts to mediate a longer truce between both sides. Whats there, with the renewed violence flaring up today, a longterm truce, fears that it will break down completely in cairo. And for now, theyre suspended. Israel has left cairo and theyre not continuing the negotiations, but israel has insisted on dismantling hamas, and palestinians are demanding that israel lifts its air, sea and land blockade on glassa. Egypt has a compromise both sides, hand over to gaza and reconstruction efforts to the palestinian authority, which already has a working relationship with israel. Theyre the government in the west bank. To sweeten it, egypt has promised to host a Donor Conference in cairo next month to raise money for the infrastructure, but the task of rebuilding gaza wont be easy. Donors have lined up two times before in the last five years to help gaza after the previous military offenses, but many of the pledges that donors made in the past were either held up or never materialized. When the dust finally settles in gaza, the rebuilding will begin. The destruction has been widespread and comprehensive. Out of a population of 1. 8 million, nearly 60,000 people have lost their homes. Hundreds of businesses and companies have been destroyed. And gazas only power plant was crippled. It will cost at least 6 billion to rebuild gaza, nearly three times its total economic output. There has been aid to gaza. 3 billion from united arab emirates, and 5 millio 10 million from kuwait. This is gazas third war in five years, fatigue could be an issue. 4 and a half billion dollars in aid was promised in aid, including 1 billion from saudi arabia, and 900 million from the u. S. But only a fraction of that money reached gaza, in part because of egypt and israels tight control of what enters the territory. They fear that the reconstruction could fall into the hands of militants. But with nearly onefourth of gazas population displaced and with electricity and clean water in short supply, this time a lack of foreign aid could be catastrophic. Nick schiffrin is in jerusalem now, and nick, we were counting down to when the ceasefire was supposed to end, but before thats over, tell me what the situation is now. Reporter well, ali, a few hours ago, we saw both sides indicating that they didnt want to resume this war, and that was this morning, and both sides have resumed the war, and were seeing the most violate images images in the last weeks. More than 50 rockets have been fired into israel. And were hearing sirens here in jerusalem. People getting behind cars, trying to hide behind walls, and taking my shelter they can, and in gaza, where there are no air raid sirens of course were seeing more than 30 people wounded. According to the palestinian officials t. One of the airstrikes leveled the house of a Senior Member of hamas, and he was not home, but one of his Senior Members was killed and one child was killed. So the violence has resumed with no end in sight. And they are not interested in talking. Nick, apparently a rocket or two ended up at or near tel avivs airport, somewhere in a populated area of tel aviv, and how did that happen . Did the dome system supposed to be intercepting the rockets . Reporter i think, ali, its important to note what constitutes proximity to some of the israeli cities. When hamas claims that they fired at the ben gurrion airport, which is north of the gaz strip. They hope that they aimed something heading in the right direction, and they hope that it hits the airport. But they are not capable of targeting the airport. What we did see on the outskirts of tel aviv, we saw the rockets land, but those were in the field outside of tel aviv, but the rockets were much closer to tonight. And we saw the order to suspend flights from the United States to israel. Nick schiffrin in israel. Now, gazas infrastructure was damaged and the only power plant and electricity rationing has been reduced to a few hours a day since then. A turkish ship builder is planning to send gaza a floating power station in response. It was built as part of a joint venture between the palestinian opened construction company, ccc, and the foreign u. S. Energy trading firm, enron, back in 2003. Ccc is the largest in the middle east, 5 billion, and builds infrastructure projects, including the largest mall in dubai. Overseeing the construction of the power plant, hes director in gaza of the palestine generating company. His job is to separate business from politics and get things done, but as challenging as a place in gaza, he joins us now, and thank you for being with us. How do you contemplate rebuilding the power plant in this kind of atmosphere . I assume that you could not start doing the amount of work until there was a truce and things settled down. The situation, as you know it, is political, things are not clear, but we start a lot of our mission now, and we have a plan now in two stages. The first stage, to supply some of the power to gaza, because you know this power station is supplying to the city, and there are 700,000 people there. And we start immediately now. We are in touch with the International Organization who promised to help us with it, to allow some materials to be exported to gaza. I hope that within one month of the day we receive the material, we will be in position to resume the operation by 50 person capacity. You say youre one month from getting the approval. From getting the material to gaza. How does that happen . We know that the very material that you need is the material that israel likes to respect from getting into gaza, because the same thing that you can use to build the power station can be used to build things that gaza doesnt want building. We do make arrangements for temporary times, but we need this kind of cleaning system. I hope within two or three weeks, they will deliver t. But we are in touch with the team, and other organizations with the state department to guarantee shipmentment, and they promised and it seems there are initial approval from israel for this. So youll get special permission to get this in there. Initial. Its only initial, but nobody knows what will happen. Where will it come from . Does it come in by land or by sea . What happens for supply . You say that you use oil. Is it oil that youre using to power this plant . Its a new power station, because the oil comes front the israeli supply. They can stop the oil, and then the power station will not be in a position to use power. But to my surprise, they supply the diesel and fuel daily up to the day they hit the power station. The fuel comes from israel with no objection, up to the day they targeted. How do you do that when youre in gaza . Because were dealing with it in that way. To have a National Source and of course the supply for the 125. And we supply gaza 80 to 140 meters. As much as we get the power together, they reduce because they need power. To support our project, and not touching this position on the biggest in 2006 and 2008. About the Power Generation in gaza, the consolidated power contractors company, and the ceo of power generating company. Coming up, you can add one nobel prizewinning who thinks that stocks may be irrational again, but hes not pulling out of the market yet. The streets of ferguson have been monthly quiet today, but no one can be sure it will stay that way when the sun goes down. What started out peacefully descended into chaos once night fell. The Police Arrested protesters. More than a week after the shooting death of Michael Brown by the police, the unrest that followed the shooting has forced local School Officials to postpone the start of the school year. The school was originally scheduled to begin last thursday, five days after browns death. Ongoing safety concerns are forcing them to postpone the beginning of school another week to august 25th. For more on the ground, lets go to robert brown. The city remains on edge, and police are bracing for another troublesome night. What are you seeing . Exactly that. It was very peaceful today. A small amount of protestors out here, which is a good thing, but now today, tonight, you see we have protesters headed our way right now, they are peaceful. And let me remind you this is the area last night where teargas was set off and shots fired and protesters were arrested. We hope thats not the case again, but the police and pretty much everyone is preparing for that. The local leaders are going to try to add more police to the force, but there was another shooting today. And some of the protesters are at a park gathering and they will make their way over here to where were at later in the evening. Robert, we see a little bit of a protest moving behind you, and what ive heard, its a disturbing allegation, but we have heard that the police have been taking their badges off. Theyre police in uniform, but without identifying badges on, is that true . It is true. We have been moved three times in the last three hours, the media has, and when we questioned with their operations, none of them had badges or tags. And they said that has been the advice from the uppers, and they wouldnt give us a clear answer. They got upset with one of our producers, and they dont want us complaining to others, i suppose. We dont know, and the thing is were trying to find out exactly what some of these protesters, what they have been arrested for, and what the charges are, and we cant get answers on that either. So the transparency, not so good out here. You are there to bear witness. And to help explain whats fueling the anger, its important to know the dynamics in the area. According to Missouri State senator, jeff smith, its not only about racial issues between blacks and whites in the city, but its about green money. Making it overreliant generated onphines and fees collected on fines and infractions, and thats why local blacks in the city are targeted for offense. He was sentenced as he lied to authorities in his 2004 run for congress, but you know it very well. Jeff, before we talk about the minor infractions, whats wrong . Why cant we get the transparency, and why do journalists get moved around . It doesnt seem like the way that we should be policing in this country. A lot of people who see these images, its not what america is supposed to be about. Its the land of the free and the home of the brave, and its disappointing to a lot of people. Its not what missouri is about either. Its the show me state. It has been our motto and distressing to a lot of missourians as well. One of the things, we have been talking to Business People in and around ferguson and the counties, and theyre not saying that its over tension between whites and blacks, but theres this issue, and the majority of the police are overwhelmingly white. Its Something Like three black Police Officers out of 50. And you are saying that theyre minor infractions and youre saying that theres a reason for t. There are underlying reasons. St. Louis city seceded from st. Louis county. And since then, theres a patchwork of counties, most of them very small in st. Louis county. They dont have any businesses, no malls, no manufacturing, so theyre overall reliant on traffic stops. Because theres a mass migration of blacks from the city to the county, and yet a lot of the suburbs havent caught new terms of the power structure in population, the power structure is overwhelmingly white. And the police jobs are overwhelmingly white. And you have this big disit can connect between the law and the population, with the stops every year, to generate enough money for a budget. 30, 40, even 50 of the towns traffic stops, you have a recipe for disaster. The thing about st. Louis seceding from the county, they lost a broad revenue base, and they dont seem to be able to fix that. Thats not going to be fixed on a local level anyway. The states have to fix that. You can have the state legislation, and sometimes they can have insettives for the municipalities, so you dont have the duplication going on. You have some of these tiny municipalities, and they have their own fire trucks, and expensive Public Safety equipment. So that doesnt make sense, but it would be better to reinvest. This is not an overtly racist environment, is that true or are we whitewashing the story . I think that white people in st. Louis, dont spend a lot of time having genuine, frank conversations across minority lines. The district that i represent, i didnt have the luxury of having these conversations. A lot of white st. Louis doesnt see a lot of black st. Louis all the time. And for a lot of north countians, this has been simmering for a lot of years. You are a professor, and you study these things. Good to have you here, and thank you for joining us. A former Missouri State senator. Coming up next, restoring the luster to the golden arches. Mcdonalds is struggling with employees and questions about its meat. Gloomy the worlds biggest hamburger chain plans to Start Building coffee and supermarket chains across america. They have branded mccafe specialty coffee for home brewing. They hope that they raise the profile of the coffee itself at 14,000 u. S. Restaurants. Mcdonald said that the coffee sales have shot up 70 since they first debuted the coffee line in 2009. But either way, mcdonalds is in a bind. The fast food chain is seeing its worst sales in ten years. Disgruntled employees want more pay and theres questions about safety of the meat in the burgers. In short, mcdonalds may have been image problem. Reporter this mcdonalds commercial, showing happy workers dancing their way through a transaction paints a picture, but its a stark contrast to reality n may, mcdonalds workers protested for better wages, demanding 15 an hour and the right to be un identified. This protest in chicago was just one around the country. Last year, the worst sales in mcdonalds in ten years, with global sales slumping 2. 5 in july. What happened in july, a meat plant in china was shut down after a tv report showed workers picking up meat from a factory floor and shipping it past the expiration date. Meat that was sent auld around and in asia. Russia announced last week that its taking the company to court over unsanitary conditions. Saying that inspectors found e. Coli in salads, ten times above the safety level. Mcdonalds is having a hard time convincing investors. The stock is down 8 and a half percent, over rivals burger king and jackinthebox. And one in four said that mcdonalds is in a growth stall, having two quarters of declining sales, and that doesnt bode well for the golden arches. The ceo said that the next step for the company is to enfire our Customers Trust and loyalty but that may be hard for even mcdonalds. He has worked with proctor and gambol, and hes the expert on these things. And the author of never eat alone. Joining me from los angeles, but first of all, keith, lets get that russia business out of the way, i dont think theres way human who believes that burgers had e. Coli in russia, thats russia trying to push an american company. The rest of the country is not los angeles and new york. Where i come from in pittsburgh, big macs and chicken mcnuggets, they rule. Were talking about a Company Whose competitors are increasing market share, and these have higher calorie count than mcdonald does. Over at taco bell, they have done an extraordinary job at innovation, and so has mcdonalds, with product innovation. Thats not the problem. Were looking at the ratings. , when they hinted that where youre at, 8, hardys 7. 5, wendys, 6. 8, and burger king, 6. 6, and mcdonalds is still coming out at the bomb. Not only that, but people go to mcdonalds for diversity. They sold more chicken this year than beef. And its isolated excellence that makes mcdonalds the best. When they set their eye to something, they get it done. One of the big challenges was the customer experience. A couple of things that we have to worry about with customer experience, sometimes operational excellence, and running an organization like a command army, may not be to the advantage of having better service. And by the way, the nra, the National Restaurant association. I wondered how you would bring guns into the conversation they have come out with a study that value is at par with good service as to why people go into these restaurants. And mcdonalds has to do something about that. Mcdonalds had a problem less than a year ago when they put out a budget. There were complaints about waging low. It used to be a job that you could hold when you were young, and its now being held by people supporting families, and the budget didnt include food. Theyre struggling with the nationwide movement for increased wages. Did you see what tom thompson did . He came on and supported obamas minimum wage hike. And hes moving in the right direction. I have an older son who is looking for the first job, and hes going to starbucks because its a good place with benefits. And i believe that mcdonalds is making the right step. Theres another area, which is how the employees are treated, and its going to be a struggle for mcdonalds, and i hope they can focus on it. Its not a ladder job. Its not designed for that. People were going to come in and work a little while, and its now a place where people stick around. But its dependent on how they are treated by the general manager and the franchise owner, and how he is treated by the district manager at mcdonalds. The chain of empathy and chain of Employee Engagement is so crucial to mcdonalds success, and thats where stratton, the head of north america particularly is going to have to focus. By the way brought in a good move with deborah wall, the cmo. And theyre going to highlight this, and i believe force them to make exactly the kind of move that they need to make. Its always a pleasure to have you on the show. And the make it a little more regular. Ferazzi, the author, the book that you have to read, one relationship at a time. Coming up next, stock markets are at record levels again. And that has one Nobel Prize Winner worried. Why he thinks stocks may be too pricey but that may not be good enough reason to sell. Theres renewed optimism today that the Housing Market may be on track. Thats because july was a banner month for home construction. Builders build new homes at the fastest face since july and increased by 13 . Home construction is up 20 compared to 2013. And another encouraging sign, the continued rise in building permits, which is an indication of future crux plans. Those are issued at a 1. 1 million annual rate. And thats the Housing Market. The stock market is doing pretty well. S p 500 gained at half a percent in trading today. And the stock market has been average, but its up 25 since 2013. People check your 401k balances. On behalf of all americans, thats a good thing. But many experts are now worried that u. S. Stocks are now overvalued. And that includes Nobel Laureate common mist, robert shiller. Its the most comprehensive measure out there for the u. S. How doing market. But the Yale University professor also dabbles in stocks. He created the tape ratio to measure shock evaluation. According to professor shiller, it has risen above 25 four times in the last century. 1929, 1999, 2007, and now. Three of those times were followed by crashes in the stock market and it remains to be seen if another crash is coming, but his ratio is 26. 17. Joining me, a professor of economics, and professor shiller, you wrote a great piece on this in the new york times. And i always find the smarter the person i interview, the less they know what happens. So youre trying to come up with reasons why the market is a, overvalued and what that means. One of the things that youre talking about is that bond prices are high. Which means Interest Rates are low. And you cant get much of a return there. So people are being pushed into stocks. Its this asset bubble that a lot of people say is created by cheap money. How much of that has to do with the price of stocks . Well, thats one of the factors. The problem westbound economics, it has many fact, all at work simultaneously. And nobody can sort is out. But bond prices have been rising and Interest Rates are been falling for 30 years now. And its a long trend, quite dramatic. And so i think its something more than just the actions of the feds since the crisis. Though thats part of t its economic forces that are poorly understood. They cant keep going down. We mostly think theyre as low as they can get, but one never knolls in the world. And one of the other things is the idea that people who are anxious about this were future and if they will have a job, and how the economy is doing, people may be putting their money into stocks, despite the fact that theyre older and prices are high because theyre trying to make up for lost time. Yes, this is a theory that i heard about 30 years ago. Robert lucas in chicago is famous for this. Its what most people will think. If people are worried about the future, a lot of people think they will sell stocks, but actually, it might work the other way around. They will buy stocks and bid up the price because they want security. Not just stocks, but bonds and housing and whatever. They might bid up longterm assets at a time of anxiety and worry about the future. One of the things about cape, your version of market price to earnings ratio, which help people to determine whether stocks are a good price or a good value. One of the things that you know, it has only been at this level three times in the last century, and those three times, a crash has come afterwards. It has remained elevated for a long time, and it can. But just because its elevated doesnt mean that a downturn senior around the corner. Yeah, it first turned up to 20, 20 years ago, and then it went all the way up to 44 before it finally turned around. So we dont have any precise way to time things. I havent cashed out of the stock market. I think its high, and i dont think the outcome is as g but the alternative is not any better, and i dont know how to time it accurately. You and i talked about this before. You have a class that you taught at yale. An open class, and i understand that 78,000 people graduated in it. You can look it up. You can still download the last course that you gave, and youll be teaching it again in january. But the price to earnings ratio is the price of stock compared to how much each share is going to earn. And how is your price to earnings ratio different than the normal ratio . Because prices are volatile from year to year. Typically, its one years earning. On the s p, it has never been negative. It has been negative for a quarter, and one of the years its going to be negative, and thats going to throw the whole thing off. Its just average, not what a company did, but last year, or the coming year. You want to smooth it. And thats conservative investing. By the way, how was that experience teaching that class . Strange. I wish i could have seen them. Maybe ill try to meet some of it. Maybe im going to take it, bob. Then we can get together. My questions will be smarter the next time i interview you. Robert shiller is a professor of economics at Yale University. Coming up, the schnell of success. Not too sweet, here on real money. His, is what we do. Al Jazeera America. Europes economies are stumbling, and we care because the u. S. Is the biggest export enter the world. They transported billions of dollars in goods to the eu block, and we imported even more, 300 build from the eu. So anything installed in europe gets built by americans. The british economy is growing faster than its neighbors, and until now, never been the continents undisputed engine of growth. And now they wonder if the uk will overshadow it. It has gone from lager to leader. The uks economy is growing as the european neighbors have stalled. Its good. Dp is higher than a year ago. And that was the best performance in six years, and its unemployment has dropped from a high of 6. 8 , but the uks recovery has been slower than germany and france. It shrank by 8 . The uk has been glowing very rapidly, but its behind germany in terms of growth since the stock crisis. Reporter among the factors credited for fueling growth in the uk are cheap money, and a weakened Housing Market and exports that help it stay competitive. Any slowdown in europe also poses a threat to the uk since it exports goods to the euro zone, and still, growth is expected to continue. I think that the uk can do very well over the next few years, but germany is still a lot bigger in terms of income expense, so larger in economy versus the uk. But thats going to change over the next 20 years. Thats because of demographic shifts. The uks population is growing, thanks to a rapid birth late, and immigration, and its expected to eclipse germanys population in the future. Im always curious about why some dig industrial economies grow faster, because i wonder what lessons from them we can use in america. Im joined by david from wells fargo in north america, and good to see you, i frequently use germany as an example of things that we can do better in america, particularly to the manufacturing side. They have kept the Manufacturing Industry going, where others have lost it, including america. Now he see these trends in the uk, where two years ago, we would not be looking to the uk for any example. And what are the trends there leading to this growth . I think that one of the factors there, and mary mentioned it in her opening piece, you dont have positive population growth. Germany is starting to head down, and in the United States, we continue to have positive population growth. The uk is a flexible economy. A lot of people speak english x. With the economy booming there, that has attracted more and more immigration. Fortunately, we dont have to learn too much about it here. We obviously speak english, and we have a growing population. Those are good for our economy in the long run. In fact, if you want to use population growth as a real possible, they dont have population growth. And thats a conundrum for getting out of this. The japanese economy will be under 15 in the next decades. So they have challenges in the growth ands a of their economy. Here in the United States, were always worried about wage growth. It has been beating inflation, but just by a little bit. And in the ubed kingdom, you have a situation where wages have not kept pace with the cost of living, and is that a danger . It is. What has happened in the uk over the last few years, the last two years specifically, Consumer Spending growth has been strong there. And what has happened, they have been able to finance that by big their Savings Rates down. Its spiked up after the Global Financial kries, and it has a way to come down, but if wages dont start growing over time, its positive, and bringing down the savings rate is not sustainable. We have seen positive wages going forward. But thats a forecast. When europe came together as the euro zone, the uk has a very special relationship. They have the trade of people is and gins without having the currency. They dont have the euro. And now Prime Minister cameron has offered to appease, getting out of europe as a whole. They have an election coming up next year. Prime minister cameron has pledged to bring about this memorandum by 2015 or so, so its going to fend on politics in the next three years. But if they get out of the eu, it will raise a lot of question marks about businesses and what does this mean . Right now, we have all of this free trades and goods of people, does that continue, or if we get out of the european union, will that be rescinded . Because for businesses, its never a good thing. As that comes closer, youll start to see uncertainty in britain and that could causing the economy to slow down in times to come. Coming up next, two big guys with a kettle of tea and a pinch of sugar created a multimilliondollar company, one that sticks to its founding principles even as itens to grow and grow and grow. Today, the beverage company, honest tea released the results of their annual poll. But a more fascinating story, how seth golden built a Home Business out of his maryland kitchen into the tea company. If you were there when it was created in 2008, you probably would have bet against it. I know i can. Emergency a billiondollar Beverage Market overflowing with options, and lets make it tougher with only organic and fair trade options. Thats exactly what they did. Often tea gre honest tea. There were few options between unsweetened and sweet. He reached out to create a battled iced tea thats just a tad sweet, combining fresh organic ingredients, eco minded ideas and the prison thats barry taught in his class. This recipe helped him navigate the business, marketing, sources and distribution to take it from the first to the buyer, the source which became whole foods market. Over 100 billion bottles a year. To coca cola. In 2008, the beverage giant bought 40 of it for 2 billion. And three years later, purchased the entire operation. It produces 100 million in sales, sweet. But not too sweet. In the companys annual honest tea poll. Hawaiians are the most honest, blondes are the most truthful of all hair colors, and tell me about the poll. Tell me how you do it. We seem to have we set out across the country, we sent out racks of tea, and a sign that says a dollar a bottle honor system. And we stepped back and watched what happens. So across all of the states, we had fascinating interactions, and i would say very encouraging results. When i and people how honest they think people are, i hear guesses of 70 , 50 , but we saw 95 of people across the country put money in the box. Thats good. And lets be honest with you. Ive interviewed you before. And you said this, and i would have bet against you guys. But the reason i asked, i have viewers out there who have a dream, or are struggling right now with a small business, and you had an allacious idea. And you guys kept plugging away. Thats the key, ali. I dont want to sugar coat t it was tough work. We had a lot of years of struggling. Four years in a row, we were eitherring on the brink of going out of business, but we stuck with it, and the key is we had a clear corner in the marketplace. Whether they had a salsa or a spaghetti sauce recipe, the market is so congested that unless you have a dramatic point of difference, its hard to stand out. So we came into the iced tea market and led in taste. But it was dramatically different than any taste out there. And it gave us a reason to stay on the shelf. And consumers kept finding it, which helped. You had trouble because the market was saturated so you had a product that you needed to get to stores, but the distributers were in the pockets of the others. Yeah, well, they were just used to carrying what the market was, which was much sweeter drinks, and we brought them this product that wasnt as sweet. And wasnt as expensive and they said, were going to pass on this. So we had to find a way to get to the shelves. So we went to the other folks going to the stores. We went to cheese distributers and dellies, and we ended up working with a corned beef distributor. And to get to the grocery stores, we ended up with a charcoal distributor. And they took to it.
