We have talked about it a lot on this show, the safety of americas growing oil traffic is in the spotlight again. A barge carrying more than 21,000 barrels of oil collided with another vessel in the allimportant ship channel. The United States coast guard. Take a look at that. The United States coast guard has shut the 53mile texas waterway to traffic as responders scramble to clean up an estimated 4,000 barrels spilled into the bay. Eight local refineries are now cut off from new oil deliveries. And the spill threats a nearby oil sanctuary. This has america remembers the exxon valdez paster 25 years ago today. A quarter of a cent think later, the shale boom are putting pressure on this countrys road, rails, and waterways. Tankers and pipelines still transport the majority of oil to the refineries. But in 2012 the movement of oil by trucks trains, and river barges rose to a Million Dollars a day, a 57 increase since 2011. Thats because construction of pipelines isnt keeping pace due to the lengthy approval process and the opposition from the public. Operators are forced to look to alternative ways to traps port their oil. But doing that comes with costs to safety. Accidents in the past year have caused Property Damage in this country and loss of life next door in canada. This barge accident comes a month after another barge accident on the Mississippi River. These accidents are bound to go up because the movement of soil going up. Reporter the oil that spilled saturday was bunker fuel oil. It has been refined, and among other things it is used for shipping oil. The barge accident has put a focus on Barge Movement of oil supplies. Ceo of clipper data, a company that collects data on energy shipping, he says that change has occurred since about 2011. But the new production, there was no infrastructure or logistics to move this new oil to market, and one of the cheapest ways to do that is to put it on a barge. Reporter oil is being moved from railways to rivers like the mississippi to get to gulf refineries, the gulf of mexico is the major way for oil barges to refineries in houston and louisiana. In the last three years there has been a nearly tenfold increase in the amount of oil that has made its way from the midwest to the gulf of mexico. 38. 1 Million Barrels of oil moved through the route. That has made the Mississippi River a primary route for transporting crude oil from the midwest to the gulf. The hudson river is being used to move oil to refineries. With more oil coming online domestically, there is a new focus on safely moving it. Since the bakken oil is highly flammable. As for barges the only thing slowing growth is the fact that there just arent enough of them to keep up with the demand. Mary snow, al jazeera. A tough economy has contributed to a break infrastructure for transportation of oil. Don is the director of Petroleum Geoscience programs at the university of houston. Us. Good to see you too, and thank you for having me. There is possibly a misunderstanding that if you stop pipelines from being built somehow were not going to use as much oil. But were still going to use as much oil. We still drill and produce and move a lot of oil in country. Thats exactly right. Were using over 19 Million Barrels a day right now. Thats a huge number. The world is using about 90 Million Barrels a day. The numbers had dropped off for a while, but they have started to pick back up. And the easiest way to move a lot of this right now is through the rails and through barges as were mentioned in the leadup to this interview. In your opinion, as we said most of the oil that gets moved around is moved by tanker ship or pipeline, upward of 90 of the oil in this country, but were seeing more movement by rail, more accidents by rail, and more movement on these barges. Are they just not good ways to move oil, or are they for the moment sub standard . Well, the volumes that you can move on rail and barges is much less than what you can move for the same amount of cost in a pipeline, and of course pipelines are underground so the occurrence of accidents is very minimal. The the one bad side of pipelines is that if they are not maintained and there is a rupture, they can have large spills. But in terms of damaging accidents and that sort of thing, the number of those that would occur would be much more limited and normally pipeline spills can be contained but not always. What is the issue we know a lot of Oil Producers want to move things by rail or other methods because they can get the oil to where they need to be more effectively, because were a little behind in our building of pipelines. Right. We dont have the Pipeline Capacity. One of the first thoughts was to fill the Pipeline Capacity that we had, when we had booms in the past. But those pipelines have deteriorated, and the capacity cannot keep up with the new capacity from the permian basin, or the eagle ford, or the bakken. In the bakken there was no Pipeline Infrastructure hardly at all to begin with, and the number of barrels of oil has dramatically increased and will continue to increase through time. So we do need to build more pipelines to make it more efficient and make it safer at least in terms of human accidents and that sort of thing but don because of the the you know, the keystone xl, because of how politicized it has become, the antipipeline movement has become fairly strong. And people think this is a real concern about the environment if we build this pipeline and it leaks into aquifers, but there is a piece of the story missing, and that is that oil is still being produced out of the shale and it is being moved somehow. Its being shipped in a more dangerous manner is what is happening. It is being forced to come across the surface, and that creates additional hazards, and were seeing the results of those hazards with all of the accidents we are seeing recently. We need to get it into the ground get pipelines running, and blocking them is soert of a false sense of security, because the biggest threat to our aquifers ares pipelines. Do you mean better Rail Infrastructure or pipelines . We know the tankers that move oil are not properly maintained . Or are more pipelines the answer . More pipelines will help, but in the shortterm we need to use the rails, and if were going to use the rails, some of that profit needs to go into upgrading and maintaining some of the infrastructure, and i think the infrastructure in general on our rail system and some of our bridges needs to be quickly looked at, and prioritized wherever were transporting volatile chemicals. Don thanks so much for being us with on the show. The director of Petroleum Geoscience programs at the university of houston. Big farmers are on edge right now. Holy money only on Al Jazeera America president obamas trying to crank up the pressure on vladimir putin, but he cant do it alone. Europes dependence makes it tough for our allies in europe to get behind brood economic sanctions. The president met with some of those allies today in the mike . Reporter the president came here with the goal of bringing europe together if not to punish russia for already envieding crimea, but to bring further sanctions. President obama was successful in securing a statement anyway at the end of the g7 meeting. This is a Nuclear Security summit, he called the g7 meeting, he called them. He wanted to deter further russian aggression. That was the stated goal. Thats what officials and aids were saying behind the seens if russia continues to escalate namely into those areas heavily populated in eastern and southern ukraine. Ominous kinds with the troops massed on the border. They called the statement the hague declaration. They said they remain ready to intensify actions, including coordinated sectoral sanctions. And it may be symbolic, but they are hoping to at least hurt russias reputation around the world but kicking it out of the g8. And the g7 will be held not in soesh sochi this year. All right. A deadly virus has been killing baby pigs. Pork could cost you more unless this virus could be stopped. The disease is epidemic diarrhea, ped is a cleaner way to say it. Humans dont get the virus, and older pigs dont usually die from it, but the ped virus can kill 80 or more of piglets. Some economists estimate losses at 4 million american hogs. Idaho is among the 27 states with confirmed cases of the ped virus. Luckily it hasnt affected this farmers pigs. He plans to raise his prices from 0. 70 per pound to 0. 90. Thank you for being with us. Pleasure to be here. Thats a cute little pig let you have in your arms there. Virus . Because idaho is not a he illy populated with hogs. The big problem is in the midwest where there is a heavy concentration of pigs. The disease is transferred by by air by pigs [ inaudible ] just the fact that there is not that many pigs in idaho is prevention. So the ped is not anywhere around you . No, not to my knowledge. It is not around me. I generally will buy some stock in the midwest, breeding stock, but i wont go back there this year to buy breeding stock because it could bring the disease in to my herd. I understand that you sell about third of your pigs for fairs . Right. It really hasnt effected me too much, but i have kept the price the same for the [ inaudible ] as i did last year. I wasnt aware how much the hog prices had gone up, i dont follow that many butcher hogs anymore. But i i have been charging 0. 70 a pound. Right now ill probably go up to 0. 90 a pound. Im curious as to how you do this pricing . Are there market prices . Are your prices set locally . How do you determine what you get for your hogs . I set the 0. 70 myself just locally, because most of the butcher pigs that i have it is sold locally to families in a small slaughter plant here. But the price is set at auctions out there throughout the United States. They are close to a dollar a pound now. Wow. I think the highest prior to this, it got to 75, 0. 80 at one now. Does this effect your yield or what you do . You said you are not buying anymore breeding stock, but i see theres a momma pig behind you. Show us that one. You want yeah, thats those little piglets momma, right, behind you . Oh, yeah. So you still breeding as many pigs . No, my my production is going to stay the same it hasnt effected me at all. The sad part about it, the people in the hog business that are being effected, they have no no income for a while, and when that happens to a certain segment of the industry, the ones that dont have it, benefit from it. And thats the case for most commodities, like a drought or something will effect the people in the drought and the ones that dont get enough moisture, they benefit from that. Its unfair, but its the way it is. Lynde good to talk to you. Thank you for being with us and piglets. Okay. Today i have been asking you if you are longterm unemployed what are the biggest struggles you face. Tell me what you think about tweeting me or leave us a comment on facebook. Well, theres no question if you have been out of work for a while, its not easy to find a new job. That doesnt mean its time to throw in the towel. Coming up there are things that you or someone you know can do to separate yourself from the pack. And someone who has been sanctioned by vladimir putin, is she worried . Not even a little. Keep it right here on real money. Take a new look at news. If you have been out of work for a long time or know someone who has been, listen up. Only 11 of longterm unemployed americans get hired every year. There are 3. 8 million americans in this category, meaning they have no job, and have been actively searching for work for more than six months. Despite an improving economying, the longterm unemployed account rate. Thats why unemployment overall is still well above average. They said the longer a person is out of work, the less desirable that seem to perspective employers. Thats a trend that needs to change. Brad karsh is a career coach, and author. He is a longterm expert on the job market. You were in the business of helping people sort of characterize themselves when they get into the market. But you were an expert of this way before this recession, which has really turned things on its head. Fully qualified people lost their jobs through no fault of their own, and sometimes its much more than six months, sometimes its a year. Yeah, its brutal for a lot of people out there. And as the statistics tell everybody, the longer you are out, the harder it gets. And its almost a vicious circle that people are stuck in. You were a recruiter, at those times unemployment rates were much lower. So it would have been weird to be out of work for a year or two years, you would think given the recession we have been through it wouldnt be that stigmatized. I think to some extent people who have been longterm unemployed feel worse about than it than perhaps recruiters do. All things being equal, if i am looking at a resume of someone who has been out of work six days versus six months, i would probably person that was out for six days. But if you can make yourself marketable, get out there, and make sure it is not holding you back too much, then there is still hope. Do you own it or hide it . I dont think you need to hide it. But there are things you can do to minimize that time. A lot of times when they put their resume together will put it on month and year. I say just put it in years. Thats an interesting way to look at it. You have notes about tips for the longterm unemployed, and the first point, ill go through all of them. Ill start with the fourth one. Look in the mirror, what do you mean by that . If you have been out of work for nine months maybe something is wrong. Show your resume to other people. Make sure you are interviewing effectively. Really look hard at everything internally. A lot of times we look very externally, meaning hey, the job market is bad, the recruiter hated me. Look internally. What is the best way to network . You have to get out and Start Talking to people. Social media is fantastic. It helps the networking process. But going on linked in, facebook, those types of things, those arent networking. What networking is you are reaching out calling people. And reach out to your loose ties, that College Buddy of yours that you havent talked to in 15 years, or that old boss you worked with three years ago. Then you broaden your network more widely, and they can connect you to other folks. And this is a good lesson for somebody out there who might be somebodys loose tie who hears from someone for the first time because they are looking for a job. We have to be okay with that. Right. And the hope is that when they come to you, its not like hey, listen, aly, im desperate, what is up with you . How about with you . While. But its an attitude that is very positive in a population that feels put down upon. It does. And if you are in that position, help them out. Do the best you can. Connect them to people, because we do want to fix this problem, and it will only help you down the road as well. Broaden your search, what do you mean . I was working in new york city, making 60,000 a year. So i need a job like that. Right. Broaden your job title, your industry, your location, and even your salary.
