Ironically while remaining officially neutral, volkswagen cooperated with the uaws move to woo its tennessee workers. But swayed enough workers to vote no. Tennessee governor bill haslam, when the votes were tallied late friday night 53 voted to reject the uaw bid. 47 voted in favor. 47 voted in favor. The Union Movement has been in decline for decades. Last year, 47 were members of unions, marked decrease, part of the story. Almost half of union mens today are in the public sector. Teachers, police officers, firefighters and the like. Jobs paid for by local and state governments. For unions to become relevant again, texas for example has one quarter of the number of Union Workers that new york does decide having a similar size workforce. The aflcio is an l umbrella force, that has its sights on texas and other states, with tbil poogz of low wage big pools of Union Workers it would like to organized. Operated by detroits big 3 auto makers particularly those across the midwest but it has not been able to crack into foreign owned plants in the south where nissan and toyota are expanding production. Either way, the American Worker is restructuring. The jobs may not be the ones weve conto expect. David arioso has this report. This was once the picture of American Auto workers, Assembly Lines turned out american cars at a frenzied pace, in 1950, about 17 of American Workers produced autos and parts. Slumping sales. And yet four years after an 80 billion bailout and huge layoffs, analysts say American Auto jobs are now poised for growth. Assembly plants and new production going on in this country, both from the domestic and foreign auto makers. More than 35,000 new auto jobs are projected an increase in part attributed to foreign based auto makers as they get new on line. It shifted, just to some extent away from the detroit 3 and to these transplant auto makers and theres more you know auto economy in the south than there used to be. And yet todays auto jobs arent quite what they once were. An average worker spends more time at work than he did a decade ago, that worker costs about 48 an hour in pay and benefits in the u. S. Compared to about 60 in germany. The newhires, the wage is still higher than a starting wage that you would get into retail. Its still attractive its not as attractive as it used to be. And yet the job has changed it requires educated workers with high tech skills. In many cases these workers have at least a couple of years of college on the line and again theyre being trained in some pretty sophisticated math. Todays average vehicle for instance contains about 60 microprocessors and about 10 million lines of code. We need people who can do coding for computers and interfaces inside. These have become much more important in the last ten years. That means tomorrows auto maker may be one part engineer and one part auto worker. David arioso, al jazeera, new york. Cindy on faib says even job safety is beginning to fade as a priority in a number of places. These are a lot of things employees enjoyed, even nonunion benefits. What happened in chattanooga and how it affects auto workers across the nation, is lance william. Covered the last weeks vote for the last 18 months. A big deal lance. Thank you for joining us. This was a real setback for the united auto workers. Unions have been doing better in tennessee than most people think. Its a surprise. We looked at the number of Union Members nationwide. Last year, tennessee had the number one growth rate among states. 33,000 new Union Members inside tennessee. You have to put into perspective thats only about 6 of tennessees workforce, theres still a long way to go. What may account for the absence of unions in the south . Well i think a lot of it is just generational. You have labor battles fought in the north many years ago, and there were a lot of plit issues that separated political issues that separated a lot of the southern states, even going into some racial issues that you know, there was a fear in some acases that potentially by bringing in unions they might have to offer similar benefits to both white workers as well as black workers, so there was some conflict there. But that goes a long way back and what you find now is that the south is a hotbed for the gop, and theres a feeling among, certainly among members of that party that unions kind of make it more difficult for businesses to thrive and grow. And among workers theres a feeling of independence. They want to make their own decisions versus having decisions made potentially in detroit or outside of the region. Whats your sense of how much influence the comments by state legislators about why they didnt want a union at volkswagen . How much influence would that have had among workers themselves, do you think they care . Well, it was a close vote. So if you look at it in the context of could a few workers be swayed here or there, potentially. We heard a lot of the votes had already been cast even before senator bob corker indicated that if it was a no vote, tennessee would have gotten a new vehicle from vw, that was early on, apparently. Workers had been out early having their voices heard. I do think certainly there were efforts to sway, and even if it was a small fraction of the workforce it definitely could have had an impact. There were outside groups with billboards all over chattanooga saying pictures of detroit, detroit in decline do you want that here . Any kind of an impact on a vote that close certainly could have swayed it. What an interesting story, Lance Williams is the Business Editor of the tennesseeian. Thank you. America tonight, next only on Al Jazeera America. The Unemployment Rate inched its way down to a five year low of 6. 6 in january but for mill ennails the situation is a millennials. The reason why are unclear. Patricia sabga has the story. Im a millennial. Im sorry. Im sorry,. We suck and we know it. Millennials, have an image problem. Were narcissistic and were immature. In a recent story by bentley university, 35 of, job preparedness and its not just hard skills where millennials score poorly. 63 of Business Leaders gave College Grads a c or lower on soft skills such as integrity. There is a mismatch between the opportunities that are out there and the skills and abilities of the students who are able to meet those opportunities. It seems bad times, the businesses claim there arent enough skilled graduates to choose from. Because if you add some labor economists whats going on they draw a very different picture of millennials aanswer the challenges they face. Economist heidi sherholz, her conclusion, its not the skills of millennials that are lacking. Its jobs. Its not because there is something wrong with them as a generation. Its because they have a misfortune to be born at a time of a very weak labor market. Unemployed workers dramatically outnumber job openings in all sector of the u. S. Economy. What we would see if unemployment is being caused by a skill shortage is some size facing tight markets right now and you dont see that. Ramping up the hours of their existing workforce but only the Legal Profession has seen a decrease in hours worked. A shortage of skilled workers would bid up salaries in an industry where its work is scarce. Heren, data indicates that there is no shortage. Why the mismatch between data and perception . Its an easier path to take, that be the idea that there are millions of unemployed workers that arent going to find work no matter what they do because the jobs arent there. And if theyre like the millennials at can opener studio, sat least they can find some humor in the situation. I got this trophy for existing in soccer. Patricia sabga al jazeera new york. 39 of u. S. Employers are having difficulty finding staff, any staff. With the rite skills. And while the overall skill is improvement or going down, some americans unable to find the right job are simply dropping out of the labor force whatever. She does not have the luxury of dropping out of the labor force she says since she lost her job as a labor personality in 2009 tara has used her skill, like voice over work and applying as an extra on the program grimn. Unless the company underwent restructuring. Tara, you are not in a position, i dont know if thats your makeup or the fact that youve got kids to just leave the workforce. So you got to find something. Its thats absolutely right. And when i lost my job on the radio in 2009 it was an incredibly upsetting experience because it was something that i loved so much and had given me a wonderful lifestyle that we had become very used to. And when i lost that job i told my sons that in that moment i had a choice to make that i could lie down and cry and lie down in a puddle and cry and wait for someone to save me or i could pick myself off and dust myself off and saying, i have a job to do. I dont know if you have taken this on or not but youre going to become a bartender . Yes, i just got trained. Waiting tables, bartending at a night Club Downtown in portland, oregon and im be working mostly nights, which ill probably have to supplement with something during the day as well and its going oimpact my relationship with my children and at this point i dont have much of a choice and you do what you have to do. Heres the situation, you lived a soldly middle class life. Absolutely. Youre going to be understaying a job thats not built for somebody with a 15 and tenyearold kid to stay in the middle class. So how do you do that . How do you are you parring back your paring back your lifestyle or do you hope you get Something Better soon . At this point its any port in the storm. Im glad i can earn some money, i couldnt do that for a long tomorrow. Id love to be back in the media in. Capacity but until the opportunity comes along i have to make do with what i can make do with. I can still create those experiences for myself. I do event hosting, voice over work. If somebody would give me a voice gig or other opportunity that would be wonderful but those dont leave themselves open very often. What are you going through . I know youve gone through some stress. You feel it physically and you feel it emotionally. Absolutely. Ive lost a lot of weight because of the stress. Ive lost 20 pounds in the last four years. I dont get to do the things i used to do. I dont get to take my sons out to dinner. I cant even take them to burgerville which is a local fast food chain. I saw one movie that this year that was nominated for an Academy Award because somebody else paid for it. Im trying to stay in our family home, im trying to keep our family together as a family, you do what you have to do, im bartending, not what i want to do for the rest of my life, but to keep us going. Are you confident that your perseverance will lead you back to something that you are better off . Fortunately i have a Great Network of family and friends and people have been very supportive on Faceboo Facebook r places. Somebody is going to snap you up, any day now. Youre too fabulous to be unemployed. Im still waiting to be snatched up so if anybody wants me, to snap me up, here i am. I have to believe that somebody out there is going to see me and understand what im capable of and see the talent and the drive and the passion and the willing to work hard and willing to bring me along with them, whether a television show, radio programmer, im a writer also, if somebody wants to pay me to write for them id love to do that too. But until that opportunity comes along, a creative person in a creative environment, sometimes you have to go into a noncreative environment. Thats where i am now. Tara, thank you for sharing your story. Its the story of so many people. Available for work in vancouver, washington. Thank you, ali. The post Office Thinks it has a solution with tens of thousands of americans without a bank account, keep it here. Al jazeera america. More than a quarter of u. S. Households have limited or no access to basic Banking Services. Thats according to a recent study by believe it or not the u. S. Postal service. The Postal Service is considering bank service, the niive is strongly supported by the Inspector General who commissioned the study and by u. S. Senator plibz warren of Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts. Believe it or not, so did america from 1911 to 1967, when the u. S. Post office offered savings accounts to its consumers. Well, the post office estimates that Banking Services could generate 8. 9 billion in new revenue per year and lets face it, it needs the money. Last year the post office cut its operating budget by 5 billion and that was considered a good year. David lazarus, consumer editor at the los angeles times. Davis why off the top should the post office get into banking . Should it . The post office needs to fix itself. The woman at the previous segment was all at sixes and sevens, and the post office needs some way to bring money back in, as the volume of mail declined, thank you very much, mr. Internet. This is a way to think out of the box and there is a need for it. Because when we look at the short term payday lope industry, we are loan industry, we are looking at something that is given out with annual Percentage Rate topping 400 percent. Which for families living at odds, and the Inspector General stepping up with a plan that can offer the same Short Term Loans at a fraction of what the Consumer Market is offering. We think that if they offer these loans theyll be done at a more reasonable rate, more reasonable cost. Well ali, look at some of the numbers in the Inspector Generals report. They think there are 12 Million People fetting these loans every year. They note the average loan is running 375, and the average person is paying 520 in interest and fees. Thats a big pile of money. Post office says it can offer the same job for 48. A big reduction in cost. Obviously anybody who needs this kind of liquid money as a godsend. The Postal Service has lots of branches which is useful. A lot of people generate the post office and other governmental entities as being inefficient. You have been to aa place where the post office does offer Banking Services. Thats right. I lived in japan for many years and kept my money in Postal Service services. There were most ofs everywhere and you have the hitten satisfaction that your money is going to help the governmental entity as opposed to corporate entity that does goodness knows what with your money. Look at the way the federal government is able to handle Something Like medicare, where theyre offering insurance for health care and prescription drugs and they say theyre doing it at fair rates as opposed to what the private sector is doing and because of their clout theyre able to influence their rates, in theory, if the u. S. Postal service gets into financial services, payday loans or Check Cashing or other basic services, it will force the private sector to compete. It can only be a win win for consumers. David lazarus is a consumer columnist for the los angeles times. My final thought. Rich guise decide to conduct a social experiment, causing two people at opposite ends of the economic spectrum to change places. Homeless hustler played by eddie murphy takes his place. Got me wondering if a little role play reversal wouldnt help the situation. Declared that americas 99 are better off than 99 of the world. They should stop their whining. Kevin oleary thinks, venture capitalist tom perkins is more sinister. He says there is a war on the rich. There is no war on the rich. The middle and lower classes are too busy working for their elusive American Dream to be waging war on anyone. Societys, class warfare the relinquish are the only ones with the disposable time and income to wage it. Historically america has had a strong growing and empowered middle class to work as a buffer.
