This was once the picture of American Auto workers, Assembly Lines turned out american cars at a frenzied pace, in 1950, about 17 of American Workers produced autos and parts. Slumping sales. And yet four years after an 80 billion bailout and huge layoffs, analysts say American Auto jobs are now poised for growth. Assembly plants and new production going on in this country, both from the domestic and foreign auto makers. More than 35,000 new auto jobs are projected an increase in part attributed to foreign based auto makers as they get new on line. It shifted, just to some extent away from the detroit 3 and to these transplant auto makers and theres more you know auto economy in the south than there used to be. And yet todays auto jobs arent quite what they once were. An average worker spends more time at work than he did a decade ago, that worker costs about 48 an hour in pay and benefits in the u. S. Compared to about 60 in germany. The newhires, the wage is still higher than a starting wage that you would get into retail. Its still attractive its not as attractive as it used to be. And yet the job has changed it requires educated workers with high tech skills. In many cases these workers have at least a couple of years of college on the line and again theyre being trained in some pretty sophisticated math. Todays average vehicle for instance contains about 60 microprocessors and about 10 million lines of code. We need people who can do coding for computers and interfaces inside. You have to put into perspective thats only about 6 of tennessees workforce, theres still a long way to go. What may account for the absence of unions in the south . Well i think a lot of it is just generational. You have labor battles fought in the north many years ago, and there were a lot of plit issues that separated political issues that separated a lot of the southern states, even going into some racial issues that you know, there was a fear in some acases that potentially by bringing in unions they might have to offer similar benefits to both white workers as well as black workers, so there was some conflict there. But that goes a long way back and what you find now is that the south is a hotbed for the gop, and theres a feeling among, certainly among members of that party that unions kind of make it more difficult for businesses to thrive and grow. And among workers theres a feeling of independence. They want to make their own decisions versus having decisions made potentially in detroit or outside of the region. Whats your sense of how much influence the comments by state legislators about why they didnt want a union at volkswagen . How much influence would that have had among workers themselves, do you think they care . Well, it was a close vote. So if you look at it in the context of could a few workers be swayed here or there, potentially. We heard a lot of the votes had already been cast even before senator bob corker indicated that if it was a no vote, tennessee would have gotten a new vehicle from vw, that was early on, apparently. Workers had been out early having their voices heard. I do think certainly there were efforts to sway, and even if it was a small fraction of the workforce it definitely could have had an impact. There were outside groups with billboards all over chattanooga saying pictures of detroit, detroit in decline do you want that here . There is a mismatch between the opportunities that are out there and the skills and abilities of the students who are able to meet those opportunities. It seems bad times, the businesses claim there arent enough skilled graduates to choose from. Because if you add some labor economists whats going on they draw a very different picture of millennials aanswer the challenges they face. Economist heidi sherholz, her conclusion, its not the skills of millennials that are lacking. Its jobs. Its not because there is something wrong with them as a generation. Its because they have a misfortune to be born at a time of a very weak labor market. Unemployed workers dramatically outnumber job openings in all sector of the u. S. Economy. What we would see if unemployment is being caused by a skill shortage is some size facing tight markets right now and you dont see that. Ramping up the hours of their existing workforce but only the Legal Profession has seen a decrease in hours worked. A shortage of skilled workers would bid up salaries in an industry where its work is scarce. Heren, data indicates that there is no shortage. Why the mismatch between data and perception . Its an easier path to take, that be the idea that there are millions of unemployed workers that arent going to find work no matter what they do because the jobs arent there. And when i lost that job i told my sons that in that moment i had a choice to make that i could lie down and cry and lie down in a puddle and cry and wait for someone to save me or i could pick myself off and dust myself off and saying, i have a job to do. Waiting tables, bartending at a night Club Downtown in portland, oregon and im be working mostly nights, which ill probably have to supplement with something during the day as well and its going oimpact my relationship with my children and at this point i dont have much of a choice and you do what you have to do. Heres the situation, you lived a soldly middle class life. Absolutely. Youre going to be understaying a job thats not built for somebody with a 15 and tenyearold kid to stay in the middle class. Well, the post office estimates that Banking Services could generate 8. 9 billion in new revenue per year and lets face it, it needs the money. The Postal Service has lots of branches which is useful. A lot of people generate the post office and other governmental entities as being inefficient. You have been to aa place where the post office does offer Banking Services. Thats right. I lived in japan for many years and kept my money in Postal Service services. There were most ofs everywhere and you have the hitten satisfaction that your money is going to help the governmental entity as opposed to corporate entity that does goodness knows what with your money. Look at the way the federal government is able to handle Something Like medicare, where theyre offering insurance for health care and prescription drugs and they say theyre doing it at fair rates as opposed to what the private sector is doing and because of their clout theyre able to influence their rates, in theory, if the u. S. Postal service gets into financial services, payday loans or Check Cashing or other basic services, it will force the private sector to compete. It can only be a win win for consumers.
