Money. This is real money, you are the most important part of the show much join the live conversation on twitter. This frigid whether is redefining what cold means for many. The weather forced airlines to cancel or delay more than 8,000 flights on fond. Airlines are used to dealing with winter storms. Most will bounce back. The weather is affecting agriculture, the cold and snow making it harder for cattle to gain wait and disrupt the transport of livestock to market. It can mean higher prices and 15 of winter weak plantings, facing damage from frost. The snow cover from the weekend storm my insulate and protect much of the crop from the freeze. No such luck in florida where overnight temperatures threatened the sit res crop. You cannot make juice out of a frozen fruit. More households are scrambling to stay warm. Half use natural gas. Gas futures trading 32 higher than a year ago. Thats bad for homes and large parts of the country heated by natural gas. Too early to tell what it will do in the coming months. Despite the sale of shavels and road salts, but it may have slowed job growth because the unemployed put off searches due to the bad weather. Well see if that was the case when the next job report comes out on friday. I have been asking you what impact has this cold weather snap had on you financially. Steven says heat went out. Overusing electric oven and brought a space heater. Be careful using your oven to heat your houses. And tell me what you think. I do look at your comments. Prepare to pay more for meat, meat, corn, thats a message. Jj keeps an eye on the prices of things you eat, like cattle or the beef from cattle, and how high Energy Demand affects the price of heating your home. Good to see you. I had a bunch of people asking how it affects agriculture in january, theres a lot of agriculture in january. It will give people a new appreciation for how the farmers do it. You touched on a main area at the beginning with cattle. I would like to have the same problem you said youd like. As it gets world, a tough time putting on weight. The cattle have the problem, and you have to remember in the cold weather its hard for them to get supplies as it is for the rest of us. Go to the grocery store, and you see how empty the shovels are. Farmers need equipment. Lets talk about oil and gas. A lot of country depends on natural gas for heating. Do you think theres a lasting effect or will it even out for people who have to heat their homes with natural gas . I dont think theres a reason to panic. If you look at what is happening in natural gas, the week of christmas it spiked a bit. Its come off a bit since then, sold off a bit. Its this time of year. Natural gas, heating oil. As we get closed, a natural reaction people will buy it, the futures. Youll see a bit of seasonality in the buying. Overall if the winter can return to somewhat natural temperatures, it will even out. Look at what is happening in chicago, where it will be warmer. Lets talk about the heating oil. Its used in the northeast. A lot of country doesnt use it. Oil prices went up in 2013, but they are where they were a year ago. You talk about seasonality. We follow a pattern. At this time of year we are the same. What happened last year is throughout january and the first two weeks of january, the price of heating oil went higher, wouldnt surprise me to see the same thing happen, its an area where the folks watching the show may pay a little more for that. Thank you for your insight into that. Chief strategies at tj america. Allan molawi is staying put at ford. Their stock rose 1 . Trading on news that muyaily will not take the top job at microsoft. A spokesman said, alan made it clear he wants to end the speculation, and has no plans to go anything other than serve ford. He told the associated press, that speculation that hed replace microsofts ceo was a distraction for fraud. Microsoft said in august their ceo would step down. Next, why americas economy depends on big banks staying big. And jpmorgan paying the big bucks to bud the madoff scandal behind them. Those stories and more. Keep it here. You jpmorgan is paying a big price for failing to sound the alarm about Bernie Madoffs uponsy scheme, agreeing to pay 2. 6 billion to settle cases involving the madoff fraud that dipped investors of billions. Some investors will receive 1. 7 million that jpmorgan is failing for failing to file a suspicious activity report about Bernie Madoff. Here is what the u. S. Attorney said about the bank. Jpmorgan as an institution failed and failed miserably. In part because of that failure, for decades Bernie Madoff was able to launder billions in popzy proceeds, essentially through a single set of accounts at jpmorgan. As part of the settlement jpmorgan admitted it violated laws requiring it to monitor customer activity. The bank recognised it could have done a better job and is improving its practices. Victims of Bernie Madoffs fraud lost 17 billion and a courtappointed trustee recovered half of it. Judith and her husband inteffed over 1 million and recovered 1 million. Its been five years, how do you feel about it . I have moved beyond. We settled our claim a year and a half ago, and i took my name off the websites and said, thats it, its over. I want to tell my viewers what they can do to avoid getting into the situation you got into. What can we tell them . Nothing. As far as im concerned we certainly havent changed the laws we are chasing thanks to the trustee, some of the law people. Whats happening, but i think its happening every day. We read about another uponsy scheme. This went on untenably long. That made it different. Somehow he was protected. How did you decide to invest with Bernie Madoff. We had an unusual situation. My mother had invested many years ago through friends. She my dad passed away, and we were really helping her and she was beginning she was senior, although totally with it and an investor. She had checked him out and stayed. We were looking at helping her. We put money into her account to give her more to live on and felt we felt it was a safer investment than trading stocks, which is what shed been doing successfully, im afraid. You heard people say of the victims, they should have done more to check it out . I dont know how much more. Mother was good. Dad had been a limited partner in a brokerage firm. She was good at that. She checked it and had files going back, talking about how hed rung the nasdaq and was expert with the scc. I dont know what more you could do as an ordinary citizen. Not a wealthy one with all kinds of advisors. As you followed this over the years, is it clue that there was one particular law in place that would have prevented this, or would Bernie Madoff have worked his way around the laws. No, there was a whistleblower recently. We would never have invested what we did had we known that he raised the issues with the scc. We refused to follow the leads that were given, and unless you do all the laws in the world will not help you. Do you think we are better at that . No. Do you think people could be at risk. Well, look at the stanford situation. Most thought they were buying cds. I have friends who tell me they do not invest with Bernie Madoff. But theres any number of ponzi schemes exposed. Maybe we are looking closer, i dont know. Good to see you. Glad you have been able to move on from a terrible situation. Judith welling a victim of Bernie Madoff. It is just the latest setback from jpmorgan, chief executive jamie diamond. The bank agreed in 2013 to pay 20 billion to setting a variety of cases, many to do with the toxic mortgage securities. As much as diamond wants to put the messes behind him, the bank faces years of court battles. A book had ban published guardians of prosperity, why America Needs big banks, he believes over regulating banks discourages ledgeding at institutions like jpmorgan. I didnt know there was a bottom half of you, because we always see you on a screen. The guardians of prosperity, if you walk down the streets of new york and show it to 10 people and say this is about the banks, nine out of 10 would tell you you are crazy, you are calling the banks the guardian of prosperity. Arent they the ones that took us down this rabbit hole being the financial crisis. I dont think so. They created a lot of bad, wrong things that occurred. They didnt create the financial crisis. That is the problem. If we had gone to the core reasons for creation of the financial crisis, we might have started to come up with Real Solutions to what had happened, but we chose not to do that, to focus on the banks and by focussing on the banks we passed a lot of laws and regulations that harmed the american consumer. What is the core reason . The core reason is that we had an enormous trade deficit in the United States, resulting in a billion and a quarter to a billion and a half per day for decades sent to other countries, and we built up a massive amount of lendable funds in those countries. When this money came back to the United States in the tomorrow of loans in investments, there werent enough good ones around. Everyone grabbed for the money and the banks were one of the groups that grabbed for that money. Basically the core problem is we have to deal with the trade deficit, produce products that we sell overseas, and that is not even being part of it. The best argument in favour of banks is that there are people in the country, anywhere in the world, with an excess of capital, more money than they need. People need that money to start businesses, buy cars, get loans, get a house. The banks work to move money to move it to places that can best be used. Cant we go back to that world. We got into a world that was complicated with derivatives, betting on somebody elses house burning down. Is that not a valid formulation to say if banks are in the business of moving money, cant that be a simplified business. Its not profitable or a business that works well. If we step away from the big banks and look at the banks as you described them. It may shock you to know we moved them. 11,200 banks collect deposits and make loans. I come from north of the border where its really combed, canada. There were a handful of banks, when i grew up there was five banks. Same number of people own house, same prosperity, canada exists with fewer than 20 banks. They do, and the top five have tremendous concentration. They are an example of what works when you have big banks. The canadian Banking System is driven by the five big banks, maybe six banks that operate within the system. The banks are so big in canada, if you asked anyone of the nine biggest knanks in the north American Continent how many are canadian banks, they are an example of how big banks work. You heard jude itted th say she approves of the Bernie Madoff settlement with jpmorgan. You bring up the point that all the settlements, whether its about the london male its shareholders, not Company Executives paying. In facebook, twitter or microsoost you have venture capitalists owning 40 of 50 of the company. In the big banks, less than one half of the shares are owned by insiders. 99. 5 of the stock are directly or indirectly owned by you and me. And the effect of that is the person fined is you or me. What did we do wrong, nothing. Who is not fined. The guy at washington mutual. Jimmy cain was not fined. Peter sterns, the guy at country ride. What is the government doing, why are they penalizing you and i for something we didnt do and not penalizing the people that did the things that were incorrect. You have great food for thought. Good to see you in person. Dick is the author of guardians of prosperity, why America Needs big banks, next, forget tvs, smart phones and tabments. It was a good attempt. Ill give a b and well work on it. There is always room to improve. Tell us about technology and bourbon. When i think of bourbon i think of an old american drink made in kentucky and some surrounding states from time to time. What is the technology that is used here . Well, i think you nailed it, ali. Thats the impression that a lot of folks have had of bourbon until recently. Weve had a renaissance, a resurgence of bourbon drinking. We take bourbon and finish it in port casks or rum casks, things that were doing, has brought bourbon back to a new age. Its reinventing bourbon for a younger demographic, as well as brought it back to the old demographic. Tell me about the younger demographic. Why are young people turning to bourbon . Bourbon is a versatile drink. The taste profile is incredible. There are 300 taste components in bourbon. Its versatile in cocktails and in culinary. Were seeing it used in cooking. Because of the cocktail creations i think that by and large is why you see young people coming back to bourbon. There has been a general resurgence, what bourbon has done particular well, but there is a move forwards whiskey. Is this a cyclical thing where sometimes its beer, sometimes its wine, and then were in an age where its harder liquors now . You know, certainly you hope its not cyclical like that, although weve seen that in the industry. But what is important with premium bourbon, they want to identify with the maker, with the brand. Theyre spending anywhere from 40 to 179 for the bourbon you have in front of you in the studio. Theyre very selective. With the internet and technology theyre learning about bourbons and learning what makes any particular bourbon great. Theyre looking at the pedigrees. Were looking at something with legs, and there is nothing that leads with us us with the sales data that anything will change. The sellers of lincoln henderson, your late dad, tell us about the distillery. We have a wonderful project under way in louisville. Were bringing one of the only full fledge production distill distilleries to downtown louisville. People will be able to come in and work with us on a weekend, maybe, and hand produce your own product, and come back year after year to taste it. Its a very interactive project. There will be other bourbon productions that will be part of the bourbon main street renaissance. What a terrific story. Hope youre keeping warm, and say hello to folks in louisville. Is that better . Absolutely, ali. Cheers. Wes anderson is cofounder of angels envy. What impact has the cold weather had on you financially. Final thoughts go to jp morgan and its 2 billion plus settlement to its dealings with convict ed ponzi scheme berni madoff. This is a huge loss for jp morgan, but since no one running the bank will go to prison or face fines, some might think this is an enormous win for the bank. Once upon time the government imprisoned people who caused debacle to the financial industry. Thing enron. But wall street is too eager to profit off risky behavior that could ultimately hurt the public and were learning that the price for that behavior is falling on banks and their shareholders not individuals who may ultimately have been at fault.
