Months, the longest streak on record. The Unemployment Rate fell to 5 . This congress should pass a serious infrastructure plan and keep those jobs coming. That would make a difference, the pipeline would not have made a serious impact on those numbers and on the american peoples prospects for the future. Second, the pipeline would not lower gas prices for american consumers. In fact, gas prices have already been falling steadily. The National Average gas price is down about 77 cents over a year ago. Its down a dollar over two years ago. Its down a dollar 27 over three years ago. Today in 41 states drivers can find at least one gas station selling gas for less than two bucks a gallon. So while our politics have been consumed by debate over whether this pipeline could create jobs and lower gas prices we have created jobs and lowered gas prices. Third, shipping dirtier crude oil in our country would not increase America Eastern Energy Security and we are reducing alliance fossil fuels from unstable parts of the world, three years ago i cut the imports in half by 2020, between producing more oil here at home and using less oil throughout our economy, we met that goal last year. Five years early. In fact, for the first time in two decades the United States of america now produces more oil than we buy from other countries. Now the truth is the United States will continue to rely on oil and gas as we transition, as we must transition to a clean energy economy. That transition will take some time. But its also going more quickly than many anticipated. Think about it. Since i took office we have doubled the distance our cars will go on a gallon of gas by 2025. Tripled the power we generate from the wind. Multiplied the power we generate from the sun 20 times over. Our biggest and most successful businesses are going all in on clean energy. And thanks in part to the investments we have made, there are already parts of america where clean power from the wind or the sun is finally cheaper than dirtier conventional power. The point is the old rule said we couldnt promote Economic Growth and protect our environment at the same time. The old rule said we couldnt transition to clean Energy Without squeezing businesses and consumers. But this is america. And we have come up with new ways and new technologies to break down the old rules. So that today home grown American Energy is booming, Energy Prices are falling and over the past decade even as our economy has continued to grow america has cut our total Carbon Pollution more than any other country on earth. Today the United States of america is leading on Climate Change with our investments and clean energy and energy efficiency. America is leading on Climate Change with new rules on power plants that will protect our air so that our kids can breathe. America is leading on Climate Change working with big e mitters like china for commitments to reduce harmful Greenhouse Gas emissions. In part because of that American Leadership more than 150 nations representing more than 90 of global emissions have put forward plans to cut pollution. America is now a Global Leader when it comes to taking serious action to fight Climate Change. And frankly approving this project would have under cut that Global Leadership and that is the biggest risk we face. Not acting. Today we are continuing to lead by example. Because ultimately if we prevent large parts of this tert from earth from being unhospitable keep the fuels in the ground than burn them and release more in the sky. As long as im president of the United States we will hold ourselves to the same high standards to which we hold the rest of the world. Three weeks from now i look forward to joining my fellow World Leaders in paris where we get to come together around an ambitious framework to protect the one planet that we have while we still can. If we want to protect Climate Change before its too late the time to act is now. Not later. Not some day. Right here, right now. And im optimistic about what we can accomplish together. Im optimistic because our own country proves everyday one step at a time that not only do we have the power to combat this threat, we can do it while creating new jobs, while growing our economy, while saving money, while helping consumers. And most of all leaving our kids a cleaner, safer planet at the same time. Thats what our own ingenuity and action can do, that is what we can accomplish. America is prepared to show the rest of the world the way forward. Thank you very much. You have been listening to the president of the United States not taking any questions from any of the reporters that were gathered there saying as we anticipated that he is rejecting the keystone xl pipeline deal under the advice of the state department. You saw secretary of state john kerry with him and as was Vice President biden and said its not going to create the jobs the republicans claimed it would and said it would not destroy the environment as the democrats said it would. Al jazeeras libby casey is live on the white house and as you know where you are the commercials are almost nonstop saying the keystone xl pipeline would create 50,000 jobs and the president trying to shoot holes in that argument. That is right, saying as you point out in the president s words this pipeline has taken an over inflated role in political discourse and saying it has come from both sides of the aisle and the president trouing to tout the gas prices and something we were just talking about right as we went in the president s remarks, less pressure on this white house because gas prices a low. Environmentalists say there wouldnt necessarily be a direct correlation between the Keystone Pipeline and lower gas prices here domestically but they are optic of building a pipeline through the United States and americans worrying how much they are paying at the tank. The president also talking about the International Climate summit in paris coming up, in just a few weeks and using a refrain we have heard him bring up more as paris gets closer saying that the United States has to hold itself to the same standards that it plans to hold other countries to. We saw the president go to alaska at the end of this summer talking about climate issues. We see him bringing this up now. And this will be part of the legacy that he wants to leave, del. Libby casey for us at the white house and standing by and with this being a partisan issue we get partisan response and marco tweeting that the rejection of the keystone xl pipeline is a huge mistake and reminder this administration continues to prioritize demands of radical environmentalists over america and much has changed since the argument began pro and con Keystone Pipeline. Different than seven years ago when gas was higher than people thought this would be an important project for americas both Energy Program but also in terms of the economy. And while the president may say that perhaps things have been over inflated now del we should not minimize that president obama is the first u. S. President in history to reject a major infrastructure because of Climate Changes and it has been rejected but never because of Climate Change and this is historymaking policy moment even if the politics had been over inflated as people suggest. As far as legacy and libby hit it perfectly he is at the stage of his presidency where he is very concerned about his environmental and Energy Legacy and seeing him taking a victory lap saying we are more oil efficient and more energy efficient, gas prices have dropped, businesses are relying more on cleaner technology, the president has not really taken a victory lap before and using this as part of perhaps the first aspect of him defining his legacy on his terms in a way that he suggests is a success. In fact, if you talk about a victory lap the president gets to say he is the first president since jimmy carter, the long gas lines back in the 1970s that many say doomed the Carter Administration to the argument about we have to make sure the middle east is stable, that libya and all of the other areas, the large Oil Producing nations in the gulf state are an integral part of the National Defense foundation, the president going on to say that is no longer the case, that the United States is now Energy Independent for the first time. A great point because regardless of whether you think the middle east is more dangerous and more peaceful than at the beginning of the term the United States is less dependent on energy and Oil Resources from the middle east than when the president took office. One question before we go because there is another Political Development we have to get to politically what does this mean to Hillary Clinton and the republicans and we have seen the tweet from rubio. Said it is a bad idea and supported the pipeline and Hillary Clinton has a conundrum and she came out and says she opposes the keystone oil project at state department there are emails with support for the Keystone Oil Pipeline and Hillary Clinton likely will face tough questioning tonight in a forum in South Carolina about that very flipflop and what was it that caused Hillary Clinton years ago to support it and there is some inconsistency with her policy positions now. Caught up on this other development that came in concerning the president ial race, reporting that ben carsons campaign, dr. Ben carson admitting he lied about applying to west point, republican candidate writing in his book gifted hands he was offered a full scholarship to the west Point Military academy and west point saying it has no record of carson applying and Carson Campaign admits the story was false and Campaign Says carson considered attending west point but never applied. David, it now appears that whether he likes it or not dr. Ben carson is getting the treatment that a frontrunner gets. Right, keep in mind ben carson according to National Polls has been something of a frontrunner in the last few weeks and the reason is people see his likability and honesty is a lot higher than the rest of the field and here you have an example of something he put in his book that even his campaign admits was a falsehood and look ben carson he was the top rotc student in detroit at the age of 17. He did get some guidance from military officials with general wes who said if you want to go to west point we can help you but that is very different from getting a scholarship to west point which he did not get and, in fact, west point is saying he never applied for one so that kind of is in his own mind between his background and rotc in detroit and the fact he really didnt get a scholarship, he is going to get hit on that and del we should point out hit not just by the media but rival campaigns, the Bush Campaign and trump and Rubio Campaign are fanning the flames of the story trying to get everybody to listen to the fact ben carson made a whopper in his book and you the media should cover this and the reason they are doing that is they see ben carson as something as a threat and need to knock down the public views of honesty for them to have a better chance of competing against him. David thank you very much and the top story moments ago the president coming out and addressing reporters, not taking any questions saying his administration will reject the keystone xl pipeline and flagged by Vice President biden and secretary of state john kerry and invite you to stay with us because when we come back after the break we will get caught up on the days other headlines. Everyone has a story. And the only way to see all of america, is to see the human stories. One at a time. Get to know the people, their struggles, their hardships and their triumphs. It gives me a lot of pride. Our american story is written everyday. Its not always pretty, but its real. And we show you like noone else can. This is our american story. This is america tonight. We want to get you caught up on the news of a half an hour ago the president announcing he is rejecting the keystone xl pipeline and capping a seven year battle and trans canada wanted to build the pipeline nearly 1200 miles to carry petroleum from cant canada to the coast and create 50,000 jobs by some estimates but they pushed back and said 50 full time jobs would have been created and opposing it would increase Greenhouse Gas emissions, take a listen. While our politics have been consumed by debate over whether or not this pipeline would create jobs and lower gas prices, we have gone ahead and created jobs and lowered gas prices. Moments ago gop hopeful rubio remarked on this tweeting saying president obamas rejection of the keystone xl pipeline is a huge mistake and latest reminder this administration continues to prioritize radical environmentists over americas security and today its more than 60 years since the Supreme Court said they cannot discriminate based on race and minnesota is accused of breaking the law and failing to integrate some schools and diane esther brook has more from st. Paul. Reporter getting them to school each day is a twostep process. First their father alex drives them in his mini van to miles to a bus stop. By dad. Reporter then they hop on board a school bus and travel another five miles to the elementary and the kids could go minutes from their homes in st. Paul but the dad says its in a poor neighborhood and not as good. Its not that hard for us because we know its worth it and they are are getting a lot better education and happy in school. Reporter he is one of seven plaintiffs named in a Class Action Lawsuit filed thursday accusing the state of minnesota of failing to provide an adequate education to poor and minority students. The suit claims minnesota allowed School Districts to set up boundaries that encouraged segregation and failed to develop or implement rules for effective integration. Civil rights Attorney Daniel sholman represents the families and he says separating poor minority students from wealthier white ones sets them up for failure. Told at a very early age, you are different and not as good and i mean that starts them at the beginning of their lives and conditions their outcome for the rest of their lives. Reporter sholman represented inaacp with a choic program and has gotten worse over the years. The twin cities metro area is one of the widest in the nation but more than half of the Elementary Schools in st. Paul and minneapolis are made up almost entirely of minority students. The lawsuit says School Segregation has contributed to lower test scores and Graduation Rates among minority kids. University of minnesota law professor orfield studying this nationwide and says minnesota once had a good track record on integration but he says it has fallen short in the last two decades. The state really switched from one that was very proactive in terms of integration to saying the state really cant do much of anything to integrate schools absent the proof of intentional discrimination. Reporter Minnesota Education commissioner brenda says she has not seen the lawsuit but in a statement said the Minnesota Department of education is committed to helping every student achieve academic success. Is that how you spell that . Reporter all kids regardless of their race or economic status should get the same education. When they get the opportunity to integrate with kids that, i mean, from different backgrounds and they see education is importance in education that challenges them. Reporter the father of five says he has always been committed to his own kids education, now he is making the same commitment to every child in minnesota. Diane esterbrook, al jazeera, st. Paul, minnesota. Two are out in space and kellie are about four hours in the walk in the International Space station and repairing an ammonia leak on the cooling station and the second either has done a space walk, the first was just a week ago. New data out now that nasa suggests says that mars may have looked a lot like the earth did a few billion years ago and over time the winds stripped the atmosphere and turned it into the red, dusty planet we know today. Reporter mars is a cold, desolate, cold, dry planet you only need to understand the sun. Nasa scientists announced thursday that the red planets once thick atmosphere that was warm and wet was stripped away by strong storms billions of years ago and like the active sun the winds penetrated mars and left it vulnerable to the suns ultra violent radiation with glass and partibles and the disappearance of water and probably the disappearance of life. Most of the stripping by the solar wind at mars was thought to have taken place very early in the history of the solar system when the sun was much more active, when the solar wind was more intense so today the rate of loss of mars is low. Reporter the rate of loss is equal to a quarter poind of atmosphere every second and it entered mars orbit last september and since then instruments analyzed solar winds and effects on the atmosphere and nasa says they documented a solar storm eating away at the planet atmosphere in march and the discovery of water on mars. We have visual evidence of water on mars from orbit and rovers that have found rocks that have formed in environments and even found evidence that ancient mars had enough water to support microbial life. Reporter so much so mars looked very similar to earth. When we look at ancient mars we see a different type of surface. One that had valleys that looked like they were carved by water, lakes that were standing for long periods of time and see an environment that was much more able to support liquid water. Reporter solar storms are much less active today and not as intense but as for any chance that earth could one day billions of years ago suffer the same fate as mars. During the times when the earth might be losing atmosphere the rate of loss would be low so we dont have anything to worry about in terms of the earths atmosphere disappearing on us. Reporter al jazeera, san francisco. Why did he decide to auction it . He felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility owning something that was so iconic and so important. And he felt intimated by it because it was owned by john lennon.
