Jonathan left gathering a bomb blast. Calling for thousands of volunteers to fight in the ukrainian army. President barack obama unveils a budget which raises taxes on the rich. Al jazeera correspondent peter greste is calling on the Egyptian Government to free his colleagues still behind bars. Peter spoke of his relief being freed, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy have now spent 401 days in jail. They were convicted along with peter ever reporting false news and concluding with the band Muslim Brotherhood. Charges they and al jazeera have always rejected. Rejected. Peter spoke with Stefanie Dekker and about his feeling about being a free man. I cant tell you how elated i am at being free. I didnt expect that we would be out, with just a few minutes notice is just really extraordinary. But i also feel incredible angst about my colleagues, leaving them behind. And i you know i know that there is Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed and the seven other people that were convicted alongside us in absentia and four others that had nothing to do with our case who are serving prison sentences. And so amidst all of this relief i still feel a sense of concern, a real sense of worry. Because if its appropriate for me, if its right for me to be free, then its right for all of them to be free. And for those who are convicted in absentia, to be free of those convictions. I wanted to ask you about that yesterday, the process for you personally how the day for you, for example, what was the last thing you said to your colleagues . How did the day play out, the emotions you were running through. No, it wasnt at all expected. I woke up thinking very much about the campaign ahead of us really feeling we had to spend an extended stretch in prison. I went for a run and the prison warden called me over, said time to pack your stuff. I said where, to another prison . He says no no no. The embassy will be here in an hour, get your stuff and go. I cant tell you that real mix of emotions that was boiling inside. As i said to you a moment ago, a sense of excitement also real stress having to say goodbye to my colleagues and friends people who have really become family inside that prison. You spend 400 days in such close proximity with people, and you really get to know them very very well. So it was a very difficult moment, walking out of that prison. Saying goodbye to those guys. Not knowing how much longer they will have to put up with this. And then, the ride to the airport was a sense of really wondering if it was actually all going to come to an end. Because weve had an awful lot of false starts with this, an awful lot of false alarms where we felt freedom was close if not imminent only to have it snatched away. I wouldnt let myself believe it really was happening until i got my back side on the seat on the plane with my brother mike and we knew then that for me, at least, this is over. I wanted to ask you also about what its like living in such contained, confined extremely difficult conditions with your colleagues, with friends and also, how you in your mind get through every day and keep going . You know, you dont spend 400 days in a box with someone without getting to know them very intimately, indeed. And over that period ive gotten to know and in fact accept both baher and fahmy and the others as family. Theyre my brothers. Cant be another way. Fahmy is an extremely dedicated professional very passionate, strongwilled character. Baher is one of the most amazing family men ive ever met and in fact if anyone has suffered out of all of this, it is baher. He has a wife and three children, one of which was born while he was in prison. It was incredibly tough for him, as someone so devoted to his family, to have to be where he is, knowing that he is innocent, knowing that this is a huge mistake, and only being able to see them on very occasional family visits, and also knowing now that hes going to have to spend an indeterminate period behind bars. I think he was very excited by the fact that im out but also concerned. Because we need to keep the focus on him, and we dont quite know whats going to happen from here on. You know, in prison on a daily basis, the key is to stay fit physically, mentally and spiritually. So i made a very conscious effort to deal with all three of those things. To try and keep fit, running in a very limited space, keep up an exercise program, to keep mentally fit with study, and spiritually fit too with meditation. Dealing with each day as it came. And hopefully, touch wood, come out of it not too damaged. I wanted to ask you now that youre out and perhaps youre starting its starting to filter through the extent of this campaign thats been going on that has reached all corners of the world from barack obama to schools in the most remote areas. Does that have you become to is it sunk in . How do you feel about this entire sort of look, the first thing i want to say about this is that this is the kind of sense of euphoria, of optimism is so overwhelming. I have just been watching some of the headlines on the newspapers and the tv around the world and whats very clear is that this is a massive step forward. And i think for egypt too, its been a really big step forward. I think that everyone has acknowledged this is an important moment. I just hope egypt keeps going down this path with the others and releases not just baher and fahmy but deals with those other convictions. On a wider level there are so many people, diplomats politicians, leading politicians, thousands, hundreds of thousands of ordinary people around the world who supported our campaign. But also i think importantly our professional community. The journalism community, the media community. You know were normally a very fractious, cantankerous bunch of people, very competitive, never inclined to Work Together or cooperate. And yet this whole thing has brought together people this a way that i just cannot quite fathom. I am absolutely overwhelmed by this. A lot of people told me about what it was like while we were in prison. We were aware of this campaign. But i just dont think i understood and i still dont really think i do understand just how extraordinary its been. Thats something thats going to have to ill have to look at over the coming weeks and months. And finally i wanted to ask you what are you going to look forward most . Oh gosh, watching a few sunsets. I havent seen those at all for a very long time. Watching the stars. Feeling sand under my toes. The little things. This has been like a rebirth. And you realize that this is those little Beautiful Moments of life that are really precious and spending time with my family of course, too, you know that thats whats important. Not the big issues. Like peter greste, al jazeera is also calling for the Immediate Release of our two Staff Members still in prison. The state network said, the campaign to free our colleagues in egypt will not end until all three are relieved pnl baher Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy remain behind bars. Our other colleagues tried in absentia also have to be exonerated. At the time of his arrest, 2013, before joining al jazeera he worked for the New York Times cnn and the International Organization of red cross. Hes an accomplished author and written a book about his time working as an interpreter and journalist in iraq in 2002. He has also coauthored a book on egypt 2002 revolution that then led to the overthrow of hosne mubarak. He also got engaged to his girlfriend and they hope to marry soon. Baher mohamed worked extensively in libya during the revolution there. Baher missed the birth of his third child while he was in prison a baby boy harun born last august. 33 members of the Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced to death, shortly after the military toppled former president Mohamed Morsi two years ago. The judge nagi shahata sentenced our colleagues to prison terms between 7 and ten years. Mohamed [ [mohamed nasiri speaks. Spouters, and if we look at this case as well, there were measures lack of fair trial guarantees so for instance not all the defendants were brought to the hearings of the trial the witnesses were not the witnesses were all from the police and being tried that Police Complex with undermines the presumption of innocence and the defendants were behind a dark glass screen in the courtroom which prohibited them from participating. The appeals will be decided in the court of cessation. And to order a retrial in a trial that meets fair trial guarantees without resort to the death sentence. In other news at least three people have been killed and 18 injured in a car bomb at a Campaign Rally being held by the nigeria president. On the broader question of how that will affect the election, despite the violence, if it is unsafe to conduct elections theyll make that known to the public. They maintain the position that there wont be an impact, significantly impact if in certain areas people are not able to vote. You have to remember nigeria is a country of 168 million people. N. Human rights council. Our Diplomatic Writer james bays is following this. Hi there james. What are you hearing . Why has he quit . Well, he was always a controversial choice, William Shabas was a lawyer at this post they complained because in the past he had commented that Benjamin Netanyahu should find himself in the hague at the International Criminal court. His commission has been listening to witness he and testimony of what happened in gaza. They were in jordan because they werent allowed to travel by the israelis to gaza. New allegations have been made against him. Those allegations we hear were made by representation of israeli diplomats to the u. N. In geneva. We understand that u. N. Legal officials have been meeting in the last few hours about these allegations and they concern work that he did for the plo the palestinian liberation authority. In 2012 he was paid 1300 for dollars for a legal opinion back then. Following this revelation he has released this letter saying he has done absolutely nothing wrong but he doesnt want the allegation he against him to overshadow the work of his commission and he is resigning immediately. Its worth pointing out that the commission will make its first report at the big Human Rights Council taking place in geneva in march. Also worth pointing out to you that he is the Second Commission member to resign. One member of the commission resigned before they even started their work. That was the prominent human rights lawyer amal clooney better known to some because she has an actor husband who is a famous hollywood star. James bays at u. N. Headquarters in new york. Well have more on the story later in the program. Prorussian separatists have announced a plan to mobilize thousands of men in rebel held territories. Joint army of two break away regions may grow to include as many as 100,000 troops. Two days ago talks on a new ceasefire collapsed in the belarusian capital minsk. Given the situation on the front we will have to mobilize people who are able to carry weapons. After todays event it has become urgent, a general mobilization. Charles stratford has more from donetsk. Sincerely bellicose language, blaming ukraine for a failure in that new niive initiative to try and restart peace talks saying the men they had sent to minsk in belarus on their behalf had the authority to make decisions on them. This recruitment drive talked about earlier today wants to try and get what he says will be 100,000 volunteer fighters here in the donetsk and Luhansk Region fighting as soon as possible. That recruitment drive to start within the next seven days. Men were not trained sufficiently, reference there to tos drive a fourth way to bring an additional 50,000 ukrainian soldiers to their front line. All this talk comes at a time of increasing violence here in the region. There are dalg attacks both incoming and outgoing shelling from here and in across the front line, and the civilian population that frankly spent most of their time hunkered down in their house he and their basements if they can. As i say some fairly saber rattling language being heard in the force of increased violence in the region. Marching at the capital of yemen, sanaa demanding the Political Parties resolve the countrys crisis. If the power vacuum is not filled, the fighters say they will take over the states affairs. Eight people have been killed and many more injured in the central yemeni province of badyr. In the home of the provincial chief there. U. N. Special envoy to libya says the two sides will meet at an undisclosed location in the next few days. After the fall of moammar gadhafigadhafis regime with various militias battling for control. All the parties involved in the dialogue have committed to reach a solution or to do their utmost to reach a solution on a political basis through dialogue. Refusing and rejecting completely any more fighting, any more killing between libyan brothers. This is absolutely clear. U. S. President barack obama has unveiled his proposal to boost Government Spending to 4 trillion and increase taxes on the rich. 9 billion will be set aside to fight Islamic State of iraq and the levant, Patty Culhane with this report. [applause] there is very little the president and the republicans who control congress agree on. That is especially true when it comes to money. I cannot believe we are here again. This place is a mess. Reporter previous budget fights have shut down the government led to files over the national debt, its ugly and should be even worse. Thats why president barack obama wants to increase spending by 7 , about 75 billion and in these hundreds of pages he also calls for raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations. But before even reading one page the republicans said no and they have shown they are willing to use the budget again to force the president s hand saying they wont fund the dpaft Homeland Department of finance Homeland Security if the president doesnt change his immigration policy. The president says he wont change his plan. In a trip to the department of Homeland Security, he rained republicans they will take the blame for the fallout. As one republican put it if they let your funding run out its not the end of the world. Thats what they said. But until they pass a funding bill it is the end of a paycheck for tens of thousands of front line workers. Who will continue to get to have to work without getting paid. Analysts say this is much more about politics than actually trying to pass a budget. Goto sides are angling in the congress to do or not do things, based on what the impact will be on Hillary Clinton or their favorites for presidency right now and they think the white house is the big enchilada. The white house only decides subsidiary issues these days. They have agreed to fund the budget for months at a time. President obama has only signed two budgets. Likely not to be putting his pen to the third. Until after the election. Patty culhane, al jazeera washington. Jason johnson is a professor of communications in atlanta u. S. State of georgia. Hi there. Previous budget fights have previously shut down the government. Is that likely now . I dont think its that likely. Senators in the. Upper chamber are concerns concerned about their chances in 2016. They dont want a Government Shutdown to be on their heads. A shutdown is not likely but a long term fight with the president , thats pretty much whats going to happen. Now president obama wants to increase taxes on the wealthy. Do you see that becoming a reality any time soon . No, not any time soon. Look, there are several things that the president has laid out in this budget that many republicans actually agree on. Item of taxing foreign income for u. S. Corporations is something that many many republicans have said that we need to do for years. That theres way too much money that comes from American Work that gets hidden overseas. The problem is, is he going to find a majorities of republicans especially in the house that will support him . I think thats pretty unlikely. There may have to be a negotiation between the upper and lower house before that will occur. How much of whats going on there is all about politics between republicans and the democrats, about trying to make the democrats perhaps look weaker ahead of the elections in 2016 . Oh, its always been about politics since president obama got into office. This says tax theres no one in their minds in this country including most American Voters who think that that is a bad idea but the republicans are primary dead set on preventing the president to appear competent in his agenda. Because they want to appear as the only ones who can come up with a solution. This is mostly about politics. The ideas themselves are not even originating from the obama white house. Improving infrastructure is usually an absolutely neutral issue except during this administration. President obama has said he will veto and assess more sanctions on iran and that Keystone Pipeline. How will he deal with objections against the budget . Well, i think the president s going to stand firm no matter what on increased sanctions against iran. But ive always believed deep, deep down that he would be willing to negotiate with the Republican Party on the Keystone Pipeline if they would be willing to negotiate on taxes and sequestration costs on the government. I dont think president obama cares that much about the Keystone Pipeline bus is using that as a defense mechanism saying look, i will sign off on this if you republicans are willing to sign off with me. These are the top stories this hour here in al jazeera. Al jazeera correspondent peter greste is calling for the Egyptian Government to free his two colleagues. Peter spoke of his relief at being freed and his concern for the men he had to leave behind in a cairo prison. At least three people have been killed in a car bomb at a Campaign Rally being held by the nigerian president. It happened minutes after Goodluck Jonathan left the stadium in the city of gombe in the citys northeast. In the countrys northeast. Looking into alleged war crimes in the country of gaza in 2014 has resigned. William shaver has joined us. Why have you decided to step down now . Well, there is a new attack officials of the Human Rights Council have now decided that they are going to proceed with a kind of inquiry, going to ask for legal advice and so on. So it makes it impossible for me to continue while that inquiry is going on. The work is urgent. The commission has to finish its job and get the report submitted to the Human Rights Council in early march and i have to get out of the way so it can go on with its job. I dont want this inquiry and attempt by israel to sabotage so im stepping aside. Concerning the work you did for Palestine Liberation Organization in 2012, correct . Thats correct. I did a legal opinion about the International Criminal court when palestinian Palestine Liberation Organization was advising people on the issue of ratifying the rome statute of the International Criminal court. They asked me for a legal opinion, i delivered it. This is a small consultancy i did it do it all the time for governments. When one is sworn in as a commissioner i took an oath to be an independent impartial member. And nothing commission has done since it began its work has suggesting in to the contrary. This is something in the past, its out there and now they are suggesting i am in some way beholden to the palestinian liberation organization. That is not the case. Ive done the work with great integrity great independence and great impartiality. When you were appointed to this position was the u. N. Aware that you had advised the plo . When i was appointed i wasnt asked for anything. I was wellknown to the united nations. They had my huge list of milks andpublicofpublications and what i had produced. They were aware of who i am and what i do. They appointed me on that basis. Its out there now. I dont know how long israel has known about it. They seem to know everything, have an extremely effective intelligence and they seem to throw it at me to knock me out. Have you come under any pressure by the u. N. To resign . No, i havent. This was strictly on my own decision. I believe the u. N. Was put into an impasse difficult to get its work done. As long as these complaints about me were being discussed and were being considered. And i had to get out of the way. Its unfortunate but this was becoming a huge distraction an the commission has to focus on its work and get that report done so that they can move on and so that justice can be done for the people in the region who have been victims of the alleged violations of human rights and humanitarian law. Now that report on what happened in gaza last summer was due to the published next summer. What happens now . I dont think anything happens to it. Its going to be presented in march on schedule. Theres a very effective professional team thats working on preparing the report. There are two other commissioners who are people of great experience and skill. And theyre going to continue the job. But the target that israel set trying to attack the commission and attack the people on it has become a little smaller for them and hopefully that will make it easier for the commission to do its work and it will be able to deliver the product which is the report on schedule and it will contribute to the work of the Human Rights Council. Okay, before you go, sir just one last question. The commission started out with four members. Amal clooney was one member, and she chose to resign even before the work began. Now the commission is down to two members. Aim i right . No it started with three members. Amal clooney stepped down and that position was filled with mary davis. There have never been more than three commissioners now there are two and thats enough to get the job done. It might be better to have three, it might be better to have five but two good commissioners have done the work and im very confident that they will finish job. William shavers, thank you for being with us. Now, in other news the parents of 43 missing mexican students who went missing four months ago have arrived in geneva. They are dissatisfied by the response of the Mexican Government and bringing the case to the united nations. Barb biphillips reports now from geneva. United in silence. Human rights workers and most poignantly some of the parents of the students. Like banabe gaspar who inclination to the believe that his son is still alive. Translator yes really, we do. We believe that our children are still alive and thats why we carry on fighting. The government has not said to us here are your children. Here are their remains. And thats why we continue to believe they are alive. In mexico, the protests are driven by anger and disgust. At the scale of police and local government corruption that this case has revealed and the degree of conclusion with criminal gangs. The u. N. Committee will make recommendations that may push or even shame the Mexican Government into improving its human rights record. But the relatives of the missing have come all this way with very specific questions about the whereabouts of their loved ones and to that point they are likely to be disappointed. Human rights experts asked about the speed of legal reforms in mexico, whether they are making a difference. The Mexican Government says there has been great progress over recent years and what happened in igwala was an aberration. It is one of the isolated events. It is because its tremendously dramatic and a huge tragedy that you cannot measure. But its not a trend. Its not part of the culture nirms. Anymore and thats the main change. Thats no consolation to the parents of igwala who have come all this way. As time pass he it seems less likely the they will ever see their children again. Barnaby phillips, al jazeera geneva. It is in your to use a single document to limit the direction of the king, a defense against arbitrary and tyrannical rulers. Magna carta was an agreement between britt britain king john and his subjects. It was here that king john was finally and reluctantly forced to put his seal of approval on the magna carta a document for the first time that sought to put an english king under the rule of law and it is that aspect which continues to inspire us today. Putting limits on the rulers protecting the rights of the ruled. Clauses 39 and 40 say no one should be imprisoned without a trial. Another clause said the king couldnt raise taxes without agreement. And clause 60 said if the king broke the deal, a group of 25 barons would meet and pass judgment upon him. Magna carta inspired future generations. Americas Founding Fathers used it as a basis for the u. S. Accusation. Nelson mandela quoted it at his trial.
