Was left on the cutting room floor. A new crackdown on what they described as terror suspects in that country. It started with a raid in the city of vervia. A grand scale as shots ring out in the city of berbier and flames engulf the ground floor of this building. You can hear gas smashing. The police had been searching homes of around 10 people. They say they recent had come back from syria. During the investigation, we found that this group was about. There was a terrible smell. So, i knew they were not fireworks. Thats why i came here. It happened in two minutes. Yes see anything but i heard it. This raid along with at least 10 other searchers, in the belgium capital comes a week after the bloody snakz france. Bell jum security levels are at a new high. This is only a decision was taken after a meeting organized by two of my ministers to raise the Terror Threat level to 3 on a scale of 4. We dont know of the concrete and specific threats, but considering the situation, we believe it is useful to raise the level of vigilance so that extra security measures can be taken. Al jazeera, berbier. In france funerals were held for five victims of last weeks attack in paris as the country tries to cope with new fear and new reality. Jonah hull reports from paris. In the week following the paris attacks, france continues to bury the dead and to remember what they lived for. In the suburb of montroy, this was the Memorial Services for Charlie Hebdo cartoonis, tinus. I have rarely seen such a talented. What they lived for the slain cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo is the principle of freedom of speech the right to be deeply irreverent to offend equally all religions and positions of power. In doing so they contributed to deep rifts in frances Multicultural Society which includes the largest Muslim Population in the european union. Charlie hebdos First Edition since the attacks has sold out in great numbers with a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad that most musslims belief is its blas femous. If it hurts people, its not freedom. We muss limdz, it hurts us. I have a message, stop caricaturing our prophet. At the World Institute in paris, a message of unity and inclusivity delivered by the pope and he said this about attacks on religion we must bring to justice all of those who attack a religion through forms such as antisemitism. Might not only be denounced but seriously punished. And racism should be fought firmly. I want this fight to be one of our National Causes. A National Cause with legal limitations. Nobody said we should protect freedom of expression at all costs. There are a certain number of restrictions which must be strictly interpreted which are necessary in a Democratic Society such as defamation slander, hate speech apologies for the most serious crimes but there is no blasphemy law. Reporter many muslims may wonder if there should ab blasphemy law with Charlie Hebdo still very much alive. Jonah hull jonah hull al jazeera, paris. Pope francis traveled to the fill peas and talked to the press about the Charlie Hebdo attack. The pope said that killing in the name of god is an aberation. He said freedom of speech had its limits. I believe you cannot react violently but if my good friend dr. Gespari says a curse word against my mother he can expect a punch. Its normal. Its normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others. Elana ahmed vinson is a columnist for Huffington Post in seattle tonight. Welcome. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. The pope said today that people need to be careful not to insult religions. Can you explain why caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad are so offensive to muslims . Yes. Absolutely. In preas islamic arare i cant the people at the time worshipped lots of different idols, demi gods. With the advent he have islam, there came a need to separate the religion and make make a distinction from the idles to the belief in one god and muhammad decided all of the id olz should be destroyed except two pictures. One was, was virgin mary and jesus which he decided to keep and another picture was of an old man thought to be abraham. This seems to be a distinction between obviously the faiths. One of the reasons why muslims the picture. Here we are, france arresting individuals for freedom of speech. You cant pick and choose what they should be able to allow and what they shouldnt be able to allow. It seems friends government wants to protect and support the freedom of speech it stands for but then, you know to not protect the other individuals who they do not necessarily agree with. Thats really unfair. In the United States we allow all hate speech all speech whether you whether you attack a religion or another country or this country or this countrys flag. Yeah. Absolutely. I think whats fair is even if you have hate speech against the french government you can get so thrown into prison for that. So, you know i think the friends pick and choose what they want to support. Free speech are we talking about is antisentism is that considered free speech or racism . I think those rornt questions we need to ask ourselves. Its similar going to what the pope said that free speech should be allowed but we should limit ourselves as to not offhand other individuals. Nice to say but, you know, if you are going to have free speech, who decides who limits what . Yeah. And then also it falls under the banner of racism too, you know. I think some of the cartoons that were published that were antisemitic that caused chaos from france. Similarly we have seen whats happened with Charlie Hebdo is islama phobic cartoons being published, i am not saying, yes those individuals were absolutely correct in going in there and choosing that. Thats wrong. If they were upset, they should have sued the company and, of course that be didnt happen but i think there is a danger here that we are offending the wrong kind of people. We dont want to attract those kind of people to cause havoc in our nation. I understand what you are saying. Just like the kkk or antisemite or antimuslim people in this country, they have the right to say as hateful and horrible things as they can and often do on the internet and in public. The question and i spooech speak out against those thingsa but this country gives the right to say whatever they want. How do you decide . And which religion gets to decide . I think thats a difficult question one i dont have the ants for, but what i can say is that, you know, i think there are limitations to free speech. Even within whatever country, whatever nation you live in i cannot go out and, you know, Say Something negative or spew hatred speech against muslims or buddhists or responsibilities. I am likely to get arrested. Not in the United States. Not in the United States . I could be causing a newsism but in france of course, thats the case. If you do that you can get arrested. I think its difficult. Each nation will have barriers limitations to freedom of speech. I think you cant map one country match one countrys laws against another. There are different cultures. Very true. Alayna thankful thank you very much. Thank you. Prime minister David Cameron is in washington for a twoday visit with sit with president obama. We are going to degrade ices isis i think he is comfortable with that. So i dont see that changing. The leaders are expected to focus on Cyber Security a u. S. Ali velshi al jazeera, new york. Some republicans on capitol hill are criticizing the release of five prisoners from guantguantanamo bay, cuba. Lawmakers are calling for more transparency. Here is roxana sebery. Congress eased restrictions on transfers abroad about a year ago. Since then the Obama Administration has stepped up releases. This week several republican senators called for a more torium on resettlement. They say the prisoners posed too much of a threat. All five yemeni men were held at guantanamo for years without being charged. Algadr was in custody in 2002 when he was 18. Like him, the other four were captured in pakistan. The u. S. Held them at guantguantanamo as suspected fighters for alqaeda. All five were cleared for release since at least 2009, but the u. S. Government didnt want to return them to yemen for fear they might be ludics into alqaeda there. On the on wednesday, the Defense Department said the u. S. We know 30 of those who have been released have reentered the fight, and usual at a high level because its a badge of honor to have been abn maint at guantanamo bay. Calls for the closed youre have continued at protests like this and president barack obama has long pledged to shut the prison down. The idea that we would still maintain for testify, a group of individuals who have not been tried, that is contrary to who we are. It is contrary to our interests, and it needs to stop. Items on the agenda included isil and the paris attack. The leaders published a jointoperated a joint oped in the times of london which said quote, safeguarding our way of life depends upon standing up to terrorism and international aggression. I talked to New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof about reacting to the patients attack. In a recent oped he rote in the New York Times about religious tolerance . I take it within islam there is, you know, clearly strain that is deeply concerning of fundamentalism and violence and jihadism. And that is real. But it becomes very disspiriting and i think simplistics when people who were far away conjure this narrative in which that is all islam and in my travels, i spent a lot of time with some jihadis and, you know, they managed to completely isolated from the west they conjure their own over simplified narratives in which the west is responsible for everything and the cia managed to get things done and its deluded. And, you know, i guess i worry that we will end up with similar over simplified narratives that also lead us to bad policies. Nick, you wrote in your column last week entitled, is islam to blame for the Charlie Hebdo attacks . The great divide is not between face but between terrorists and moderates, those who are tolerant and those who otherwise. Explain what your concerns are there. The world has, indeed to has to address this this question of extremist, violence among those who call themselves muslims and thats, you know it is frightening that after the Charlie Hebdo attack Charlie Hebdo was attacking christians jews, all kinds of groups. But i think, you know, we all pretty much believed almost right away muslims included that it was probably jihadi muslims who had engaged in this slaughter. Issue is real. If we want to fight it, we are not going to fight it by having us harumph and thump about it. It will be moderate muslims who will be most effective. Access the New York Times, other news organizations have refused to publish the cover of the the nude cover of Charlie Hebdo. Do you think thats the new cover of Charlie Hebdo. Do you think thats the right thing to do . You know i i think that given the news value of this i think that the fact that it is not intrinsically insulting, i think that probably it was appropriate to actually publish that knew cover or to show it on air. Nick kristof, its good to have you on the program. Thanks again. Appreciate it . Good to be with you john. France reported 19,000 Cyber Attacks just this week. The Cyber Defense branch of the French Military claims islamist hackers are responsible. France says the Cyber Attacks are in direct response to sundays freedom march. The hacks have targeted websites ranging from tourism to the military. There have been calls for the National Security agency to end its collection of phone records and other data. Last year president obama ordered a study to see if there was a Software Program that would make it easier to gather targeted information. Today, the National Research counsel said that no Software Based technology could fully replace the bulk collection program. Our scientists and Technology Correspondent jake ward now give us an understanding of where things stand. When it comes to what the government is trying to do here, they face the same thing that corporate entities do as well an endless fire hose of data. If you drink from it, you get hit in the face. You dont have a good way of picking out what you need. Here what the president was asking for was the sense of can we stop vacuuming up everyones data . Can we use software to get in tighter, get what we need and leave the rest of it alone and try to respect sflooifs from a software perspective, its not possible. Where does that information go . The information we are talking about with the nsa is anything you make public and a lot of things you dont make public. There is a tremendous amount of Information Available to anywhere. Petabytes are being collected. Its going all over the place. What initiatives are underway to help maintain the at about to better collect it. The nsa software that they are working on, there is at least five different programs that irapa, the big multiagency almost Venture Capital funneled for fundings with highrisk software projects they are working at least five different projects. Oneis called the aladdin proper. It would look at any video up located to the internet and try to automatically categorize it in some way. You could put in a query like find me the guy who is walking against the flow of the crowd and you could find that kind of thing. Thats a piece of software they are working right now. Another is called the babble program and that wouldli listen to our conversation on a phone and trans scriptcribe it and pick out chose words. That sounds worst . For sure when it talks about selective data gathering, it doesnt sound any more selective. Yeah. Maybe it is. What the president was asking for here was is there a way for us to limit the amount of data that we gather using software . Instead, the trend is going the other way. We are only picking up more and more than and more data and trying to be make it more useful. Is there a limit to the amount of data they can collect and use. As far as we know not really. Certainly in this day and age where everything on the social media, on youtube, all of that is up for grabs in addition to phone calls you may think are private. What we are talking about is a world in which the president is asking is it possible for us to use soft way to collect less of that . The government is not doing that. What they are instead doing is expanding the amount of data they can get and making it more useful to. Interesting story. Jake ward thank you. . Thanks. Last night, we brought you a story about four death row innatures oklahoma looking for a stay of execution. Tonight, one has been put to death. Oklahomas First Executive since a botched lethal injection since april. But as the price of Oil Continues to drop worldwide, fears about security job security in texas are going up. Andy gallacher reports. Deer park calls itself the birthplace of texas, a state that built fortunes on oil. This is the quintssential oil community. Refineries and billowing chimneys dominate the landscape. If people dont work directly for the oil company, itself they are connected to it in so many ways. Seattles mayor said he wants to end the citys growing homelets problem forever. He asked to increase the number of at the present time cities. Critics say first the existing ones should be fixed. Alan chauvler has more. Welcome to a place called nickel nickelsville named for a former mayor. This is kisha enjoying a little bit of the warmth from the fireplace here on the very cold chilly morning in seattle. She is part of a population of about 2300 considered homeless in this city. Very hard to get exact figures, good data on this. But the last time that a onenight count was held of the homeless in seattle, it was estimated more than 2300 people were sleeping on city streets or in their cars todefined as homeless above and beyond the 1700 beds in shelters that the city also provides. The city of seattle spends about 37 million a year right now on a variety of different homelets programs. This one, nickelsville had to move 16 times since it was founded back in 2008. Lets talk to alex jacob who is the external affairs coordinator. You are still looking for some services and for some support from the city for existing needs . Yes, we are. Absolutely. With the news we just received of the may ors support of three new encampment for 100 people each, we feel thats great. Its a step in the right direction. The fact of the matter is we have needs hooker that shall not been met. Like somebody to pick up the trash. Like that. Our honey bucket situation, the restrooms, the portapotties. Those are in arrears. Thats important for encampment like this to work to help people do what we do. Before more money is thrown at another situation, lets have things work and work right here. Lets take a look inside one of the units here in nicholsville. We have permission from joseph one of the residents to come and have a visit at the place where he lives. Pretty cold but in nicholsville, its nice of the people. Glad to have a bed out of the rain . Absolutely. Absolutely. This is great. Its better than having to wait in line like cattle and being herded around. Appreciate the time. Right now, not exactly sure exactly where the funding is going to come for these three additional cities, an additional 300 people housed in similar conditions like this. The city of seattle so far is saying they are willing to put about 85,000 to the caused. It seems that the lions share for the funding of this would have to come from the organizations who apply for the permits to set up and run the camps. They said the only option was to take pork off of the table. This sign outside of a chipotle restaurant didnt discourage customers from going in. Its one of the 600 chipotle outlets where pork or carnitas has been pulled. If you are going to eat an animal let it live its life okay. How they pick their animals, it makes a difference on me. Slightly but it does. I come here a lot. Chipotle said the decision was based upon the welfare of the animals. In the statement to al jazeera america, the company said, we found a pork supplier that was not meeting our standards, the standards for all of our responsibly ayraised meets are high but the differences in Animal Welfare are greatest in pork. Our responsibly raised pork comes from pigs raised with out door access or in deeply bedded pens and without the use of antibiotics. I appreciate chipotle for standing up for the petitions at least. The dip ver based country has 1600 locations and a stated mission to serve food with integrity using meat that is naturally raised and antibioticfree. To reinforce its message, chipotle made this video to show the negative did of industrial farming. Sticking to standards of providing a quality product is making its customers happy, but what will did do to profits . The stock price was down thursday but business analysts say that has little to do with the companys decision on pork. There is a certain halo over these kind of companies that treat the workers better have fresher ingredients, so in fact, in the long run, i think its going to help them even though in the short run some customers will be disappointed. The example is a growing trend driven by consumer demand for quality products that dont compromise on values. There is a lot of pressure on manufacturers and retailers these days. I think it is Good Business for companies to Pay Attention to what their consumers are looking for. One Animal Welfare group says less that 5 of the meat in the u. S. Is raised according to humane standards, something that might make it tough for chipotle to feed its customers growing appetite. It says its not sure how long the more tollway on pony will last. There is a waiting list to get in, and plans to find more sacrifice meet sacrifice meet demands. I i welcome . Good to be here. I am going to start with your tweet. All right. Can we put up the tweet . You have to look closely, but in particular, you say these women are the only black women who won an acad Academy Award . Yeah. The roles . You are asking what does this speak to . What were you trying to say. It speaks to the limitation of representation of black women in hollywood, and what that is really about, in my opinion, is the fact that the majority of the people who are giving the money to films to get made and who are getting films made as writers and direct orders are people who honestly have a very very, very limited purview in what they see black women as. They view brack win as maids . This is just a common for a lot of privileged white men, you know, thats kind of the positioning for a lot of black women for them through history, through their present lives, in places of submission and. It wasnt just black women. It was women in general . In my tweet. I know your tweet was. Yeah. But yes, i mean the fact of the matter is women are still not represented in general at the rate that we are in the real world in hollywood or the economy. I am going to try a really dumb question wouldnt those men recognize talent . Wouldnt they recognize women if they thought that it reached the quality of the oscar . Not if it replaced them. And i feel like thats really what privilege speaks to in this country. We cant let you take our place. You know and to be frank, thats what a lot of white men are fighting for in this country. Like we cant give you anything because then you are going to take over from us. And thats what, you know corealism is about. But thats another show. Whatever the reaction on social media to your tweet . The overwhelming reaction was positive. It was retweeted320 times. When you speak truth, you stir things up. Right . I think the majority of the negative responses just came from a place of people saying they felt that the tweet somehow diminished these womens deserving of the roles. And i dont even know how they arrived at that because i wasnt in any way saying the women didnt deserve these roles. I am saying its unfortunate that it seems like these are the only roles available to black women in hollywood and that these are the roles that are getting any kind of praise because they are still safe roles. They still, like keep black women in a position that is not one of power. Have we not reached a point now where black women you are right. We havent. Where black women cant produce their own films, write their own films, where black women cannot write character did . We have been able to do this. Its about getting money to do this on a broader scale. Blam women, black people people have always been able to do these things, you know like slave narratives were coming out when we werent allowed to read and write. There is not a large fatset of money and availability for us to get our stories told. As a black woman comedienne and writer and creator, i have to create my own stories because i cannot rely on hollywoodts canton because they are not interested in telling my story. Help me on that one. So what does hollywood do . Fire all of the white men . No. But there has to be a consciousness. There will has to be a consciousness. Its like what does ferguson do . What do these police do . You have to let other people in to represent the community. America is not all white men. It is not representative of that some of the there needs to be people in all levels. You would think that socalled liberal hollywood would understand that. Liberal hollywood is liberal hollywood when they go and give money to these liberal cam papers. At the end of the day, they are making republican money. Amanda, its always good to see you . Thanks.
