Because of security concerns. Or their home countries are unwilling to take them back. When you talk to a prisoner in guantanamo about the future they usually raise an eyebrow at you aand say well i have no future but im happy to say thats what im here to talk to him about. When we sit down we will be talking about what he wants to do. When president obama signed the executive order to close the camp many believed it would take months but not years. But the process has proved arduous. More detainees are expected to be released before the year is out but its the others, the ones who are actually facing charges or deemed to be too dangerous to be set free that really stand in the way of the closure of Guantanamo Bay prison. The attorney general eric holder on his way out the door still very active now particularly when it comes to these issues of race and Law Enforcement in this country, announced the decision earlier today in some comments. Lets listen. It can be misguided it can be i think ineffective given the limited resources that we have, given the opponents we face both here and certainly overseas. We cant afford to profile, to do Law Enforcement on the basis of stereotypes. It undermines the public trust ultimately but also makes us not good at what we need to do. Now tony iforts important to note that this its important to note that this ban only applies to federal Law Enforcement not to state and local. Holder and the federal government say they will work to encourage those local Law Enforcement agencies to adhere to guidelines. Border security agents, Airport Security agents, the tsa and the secret Service Agents including here at the white house are exempted by some of those prohibitions. Civil libertarians, civil rights advocates say its a big loophole, that will endanger those in most danger of racial profiling. Mike viqueria, thank you. When it comes to Police Killings history shows that officers are rarely indicted. The numbers from 1999 to 2014, at least 179 people were killed by on duty nypd officers. Coming up on the program, Oil Prices Sliding hitting the lowest price in five years, and that had a big effect on the markets. Plus, noncompete prices in fast food industries, workers cant work in the same business for two years after leaving. How about this. Oil prices are at their lowest level in five years. Just over 63 a barrel. Comments from a key oil producer that prices will stay around 65 a barrel for five months. Wall street was down 106 points, as you can see here, the dow, the s p lost 15 points and the nasdaq lost 40 points. Fast food workers forced to sign contracts that prevent them for working at competing chains. Thats the case at jimmy johns . Jimmy john . Christof putzel says this is not just for sixfigure executives. This is the jimmy johns blt. No one would consider it a mystery unless you are jimmy johns. To them this simple sandwich is a trade secret to be protectat all costs. Producing a virtual lock on their salaries. Which amounts to less than minimum wage. Until recently kaitlin 25 also worked at a local jimmy johns. We met them at a nearby restaurant. We wouldnt be able to work here. End of discussion. Half the list are sandwiches. Kaitlin is talking about this, an agreement that all jimmy johns workers must sign. Preventing working for a competitor has a menu is more than half sandwiches. Waiting tables is pretty much out of the question i guess. And is this a place youd like to work . Yeah, im sure people would tip well here. Reporter under the jimmy johns agreements kaitlin and emily cant work for any competing Food Establishment in any capacity. Not just as an below but position as owner, partner, investor, manager or advisor. This map of the chicago area shows just how limited their job prospects are. Anywhere theres red they cant work for a competing business. I cant work in a gas station, i cant work at a mom and pop shop. I cant work at subway, panera, anything like that, anything that serves sandwiches. Reporter jimmy johns declined our request for an on air interview. We fold up to see why these employees have to sign these agreements. They declined that request as well. I want to try leave and do Something Different but im scared to leave. I dont know if ill be able to find anything else. Were being treated like were property of the company essentially, like we can only work there and all of the experience that we have there is useless anywhere else. Youre just a tool for them. Kristof, come on, this is crazy. No, its absolutely crazy, its practically unheard of. But its almost a method of control. This way aan employee cant negotiate for more pay, or cant go off to work for anyone any business that gets 10 of their revenue from sandwiches. A Convenience Store or gas station as one woman in your piece says. And jimmy johns is in 48 states. This woman wants to move to go to colorado, she wants to start a life but she cant. Shes worried, her background of working is in the Food Industry and she cant actually work in the Food Industry. Well, wait a minute. Jimmy johns hasnt actually gone after a former employee whos taken a job at a Convenience Store at a gas station, concome on. They havent. But theyre asking every one of their employees to sign this. A woman is still work there and doesnt feel she can leave because where else would she go . Its a way to retain their employees and keep them in line and that way dont dream big kids, theres incorporate tolls go. You sign a noncompetes base e youre getting a significant bump in pay in order to do so. Not the case. These employees are working just above minimum wage. Youre kidding me. Six days afterring the grand jury decided not to indict the officer in the eric garner choke hold death. We are back in a moment. A a madoffs secretary. An unimaginable story of betrayal. They lived this incredible life. It just never occurred to me that they were living on the dime of the clients. Greed. Bernie was stealing every nickel but he wasnt trading anything. And entitlement. You took my grandchildrens future away from them. A new protest today six days after a grand jury did not indict the Police Officer who put eric garner in a choke hold. Rallies are taking place across the country and some turning violent. Roxana saberi has the story. Roxana. Over the last 24 hours some have grown intense and violent. These protesters in new york surprised commuters on monday morning, temporarily shutting down a bridge during rush hour. In las vegas, demonstrators staged what they call a diein. And in washington, d. C. They marched outside the capital. All united by a desire for justice. University of michigan library. The goal was one, for us to be seen, two for us to be heard and three for us to be respected. Twitter, facebook and tumblr to be visible. Police say they played five arrests on sunday night. People were throwing these, breaking it, people with mostly covered faces of course and people started walking up and taking some of the bottles. Protesters, with a royal shutdown, when the prince and principlprincess appear at a bal game. Iris baez, officer fran lebote was indicted but a judge being are rlg acquitteacquitted. Iris, i met you a few seconds ago but a pleasure having you on the program. Tell me about these pictures. This is my son anthony baez. He was murderby officer lebote. And this was nicholas takewell junior who was killed playing in the stairwell of the projects. Today, theres no justice. Were talking about 20 years back. New york killed by police in cold blood. Dating back 20 years youre telling me. Yes. This man he had six children and he was in a restaurant cooking and then he heard a noise and he came out with a knife in his hand and they shot him. Its multiracial, tell me iris what happened to your sob. My son was playing in the front yard with a football. The football touched the patrol car. How old was your son . He was 29. It was a football, they setback so they wouldnt hit the patrol car. At the time that lavote got out and put my son in a choke hold he was being monitored by his sergeant. That lavote was not supposed to have any contact with the community. Really, really . He had 15 prior complaints he abused the community yet he was allowed to continue. So there was plenty of information on the record about this particular officer right . Yes, yes. Were you surprised at all by the decision of the grand jury in Staten Island not to return the indictment . No. Why . Because i knew it away going to happen was going to happen. Why . Because everybody has a uncle or cousin whos a Police Officer and everybody need to to help them to make cases. They work together. I want an independent prosecutor, but not with any ties with the police. Independent. Of anyplace in the state . Anywhere. Mayor deblasio says, help is coming. Do you have faith in mayor deblasio . 20 years ago pataki said police would get training. There was going to be a major change, d. A. Says, heads would roll, im still waiting for heads to roll. In your sons case . In every case. You were promised and it didnt happen is that what youre saying . There was perjury all over and nothing happens to nobody. But if change is going to have to happen it has to be change within the department. Inside the mans Office Inside the governors office. Inside not from outside, were not going to do nothing outside, but just give them more leeway to put us in jail, find out who you are, make up a story, because the first thing they put out is, your record of the victims. Not the police. Did they do that in your sons case . Yes, they tried to do everything. But the only thing they could come up with, he had asthma. The asthma went when he was 15. And that was a contributing factor, if he was in a choke hold it wouldnt have killed him. Like garner, they put his hands behind him and dragged him. Do you think if the protests are effective theyll lead to change . It will bring awareness and bring more people into it, asking questions, but it will really do nothing until we can make a change within the department. Heres the question im asking everyone and i think youre a perfect person to ask this question of. What do you think is at the root at the core of the mistrust the training. Between brabetween black andn communities . We need to have residency, thats what were asking for 19 years ago, we were asking for residency and they didnt give it to us, they gave us cpr and the car. You want cameras body cameras, cameras on the cars, cameras on the weapons . Look he can say he knocked down my camera. Thats nothing. Thats just a waste of taxpayers money. Iris its great to see you. Thanks for being here, thanks for bringing the pictures too. Friday i spoke with Brooklyn Borough president captain eric adams. I asked him about his experience as an officer and what that told him about mistrust about members of the police and the black community. Our nation is going through a period of Law Enforcement and abusive imoxtion and wabusive i. You cant deny it but every take we wake up in a drunken stupor. We need to acknowledge to implement some real changes because we are already receiving the best training in our country in all of our agencies. California, chicago, new york, were receiving the training. Where we go wrong is that we utilize that good training, and middle class, white communities, and economically achievable communities but whether it comes down to going into communities of color, that training goes out the window. Everyone is treated in a manner which we use lethal or serious force before we try to deescalate a situation. That is the policing we have been trapped in. And now its time to move from that. How has that happened, why has that happened . The scenario you just described, how has that happened and why . Because if you look across the country, probably outside of washington, d. C, if you look across the cub all of these Police Departments the country all these Police Departments look the same, primarily male and white, with the largest amount of fire power is in communities of color that deal with serious social issues. So when you have this toxic mix where individuals are not are told what is the real mission, and it has really been ignored for years, Police Departments across the country have basically said the same thing. We dont look at color when we police. Were all just looking at where the crimes go. There used to be the famous saying of commissioner kelly. Color rules our life. If we dont acknowledge that then we cant police in it. Police departments have not created the isns in society but they have to police in these isims. Sexism, racism. Adams went on to say he didnt think many of his fellow officers were racist but were ingrained. They have major issues Going Forward, the president wants to open those up Going Forward and open 2015 in a better light. Is there a feeling had this is part of a wider problem at the university . Yeah, thats it. I think that, you know, if there wasnt issues in the years previous, for example, the kids painting their faces black and having a party completely uncalled for that maybe this would have slid under the carpet so to speak. But no, this is definitely a problem. A lot of the he African American students came out on campus and spoke to the new president face to face to express their concern that they just felt there were times on their campus that they just didnt feel welcome and that shouldnt be.
