This is not the first demonstration of its kind in baghdad. Hundreds of iraqis have been taking to the streets since parliament nominated a Prime Minister to replace incumbent Nouri Almaliki. He may still have some supporters but maliki has been increasingly isolated. Politician and even the shia parties are not willing to back him. The iraqi leader has lost the support of the international community. Nevertheless, maliki remains defiant. Its a constitutional violation. Reporter al bady has been the man charged with saving iraq. Al abadi faces many challenges. Not only does he have to make sure that the sunni, kurds and shia are represented. Many are calling the growing threat from the Islamic State group. They want what they call a regime change. There wont be stability in iraq just by hitting the state group. Iraq needs to return to the arab fold. The thousands of sunni prisoners need to be released and the constitution needs to be amended. Reporter the kurds who have fulling out with al malikis government is fighting their own war with the Islamic State group in the north of the country. They have been appealing for help. The u. S. Has sent ammunition. France is sending weapons. But there is no solution to iraqs problems. Theyre hungry, thirsty and exhausted after walking through remote mountains for days. These people from iraqs yazidi minority would flee from the Islamic State group. Some would fight back. We continue to fight for four consecutive hours until the Armored Vehicles reach the barricades. We came down from the mount and walked 12 hours until we reached the road. We were later transported. Now the plight of minority groups in iraq joining me from new york, u. N. s special representative on Sexual Violence in conflict. Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us. Will you give us confirmation for the kind of incident that youre concerned with. Were concerned that the Islamic State is targeting minorities, ethnic reform in iraq and its usually the women who theyre abducting and sending them as sex slaves. More important recently we have information from the mission in iraq that about 500 or more women have actually been abducted. These women have been traded and sold as sex slaves. Some of them are already committing suicide. Were very concerned abou concerned about what is taking place against minority women. Do you think it will be enough to change the course of things there in iraq . Yes, as i said, were very much concerned. We know that the women have been attacked, and they have been kidnapped, and the children have been separated from their parents, and the men are being killed. Its a very serious tragedy that were facing, and we would like to do everything we can to protect these women and bring them back to safety. Do you think there needs to be International Prevention on the ground instead of just the humanitarian efforts weve seen so far . I think were very happy with the effort being done by the jade, and we think its providing humanitarian cord door. You can take them down from that mount and safety u youre not sure that they will survive. In your statement he reminded the groups that acts of sexual violation is grave and the acts of war crime. Do you think theyre going to live to your call or your words when these groups have been beheading enemy and apparently burying women alive in some reports. Yes, i think everybody is listening, even the secretary general made a statement against it, that this minority women are being used as sex slaves, and i think they have to understand that wherever they go, wherever they are, they will have to account for what theyre doing to these minority women and girls. Thank you very much, indeed, for taking the time to talk to us. Thank you. Egypts former president Hosni Mubarak has defended his 30 year rule as he denied the killing of protesters. His passionate plea was made in a cairo court where he was accused of deaths in the uprising that forced him from power. Reporter the former dictator arrived on the stretcher directly from the Military Hospital where he already is serving time for corruption. This was the first time Hosni Mubarak gave testimony, and he denied ordering the killings of protesters during the january 2011 revolution. Mohammed Hosni Mubarak appearing before you today never handed down orders for the killing of protesters or the bloodbaths among the egyptians. The trial of mubarak and his top aids have been going on for three years. Egypt has seen a president elected and deposed during this time yet no verdict on the man at the center of the storm. Mubarak was supposed to spend life in prison, but the sentence was overturned on technical grounds leading to this retrial. Many believed the 86yearold would ask for a more lenient sentence due to his age and reportedly frail health. But it wasnt the case. He cut a very different figure than Previous Court appearances where he was clearly coming across as a defeated, sickly old man. But the Hosni Mubarak that we saw today looked very much, aged, of course, like the man he was for three decades, proud and very confident. Mubarak spoke at length of his decades in power. He spoke of when he was forced to step down. Reporter and i, like any other human being, make mistakes. Yet, i assume responsibility in absolutely faith and honesty. I did my best to fulfill my duties, and i, like many, will be judged by history. The court also heard testimony from the former interior minister, who repeatedly said a foreign plot was behind mubaraks jouster. Judges are expected to hand out a verdict on september 27th. Indirect talks are continuing in cairo, delegates are trying to find a long Term Solution to the conflict. Israels has warned against the resumption of fighting. I will warn, i dont know if admitted night we will have an arrangement. The dead from the blast thre include two journalists you one italian and one palestinian. The explosion was in an area that has seen intense fighting. Since israels military assault on gaza began on jul july 8th 64 Israeli Soldiers and three civilians including a Thai National has been killed. 1,957 palestinians have died. More than 10,000 palestinians have been wounded, and more than 209,000 people are still living in 88 u. S. Shelters. Many people including children are in desperate need of medical help. As an do you simmons discovered, the shelters have become a breeding ground for disease. The bombardment for gaza did not spare its medical services. 15 of 32 hospitals were damaged. The World Health Organization said more help is needed. This was an intensive care unit at a hospital. It is now totally closed. A bomb went off nearby, spraying the entire building with glass and shrapnel. A twoyearold child was in this bed being resuscitated by a doctor. He could not complete the process. The child died. Another threat to children now is disease. These three brothers are all seriously ill with men meningitis, and they are not alone. The did he see is spreading and it there are tens of thousands of people homeless. Beds have to be shared. Now were dealing with 120, 130 cases every day. Reporter many of the Sick Children here are from schools used as shelters by the United Nations if we have 60 people in one room in the school, and most of them are children. Reporter she will have to return to her shelter because she has nowhere else to go. There is just a form of existence. Like the hospitals its overcrowded. There is drinking water, food rations and somewhere to sleep. But sanitation and hygiene are gone. More than 5,000 people are living here. Yet they share 15 toilets and five showers. Officials are calling these shelters breeding grounds for disease. If the situation persists for a longer time we will have a Health Crisis in terms of commune cannible diseases. Reporter that is the worry. Bring us uptodate with what we think is coming out of those cairo talks to try to bring along a stable end to the fighting. Reporter well, first of all, lauren, the ceasefire, the 72hour ceasefire expires in two hours and 45 minutes. There is no indication just yet whether it will be extended, whether there will be a resumption in the fighting, whether they have reached an agreement. What we do know from reports is that the israeli delegation in cairo has returned to jerusalem or is on its way, and that the palestinian delegation is still there in consultations and is due to hold a News Conference in the next 15 minutes. We have heard palestinian leaks about what this proposal looks like. It suggests that it would open some of the crossings between israel and gaza and allow the movement of people and goods under the super vision of the Palestinian Authority. We also know that cement that is needed for reconstruction of gaza will go into the gaza strip but only under the supervision of a third neutral party. We dont know if its tantamount to the siege, and we dont know if hamas would agree to have Palestinian Authority present on its crossings with israel. We also are hearing that the egyptian proposal would suggest that israel would look into expanding the fishing area in gaza, gradually, not right away, from three nautical miles to six or 12. We also know that israel may not object to transferring the salaries of civil certificat servants in the west bank which is something that many object to. Right now the key demand of the demilitarization of the gaza step is part of the talks for the ceasefire and the demand for a sea port and airplane is now postponed. Thank you. The palestinians demands as we heard there the negotiations in egypt is the right to build a sea port. They say it will give the territory a gateway to the world but israel is blocking construction unless hamas agrees to disarm. Reporter the fishing port is coming to life. Even though everyone here is worried about the days to come. 20 oh nautical miles off the coast, over the years his world gradually shrunk. They say it is enough. A few hundred meters from the coast. Israeli navy is never too far and the fishing port wasnt spared from this its firepower during the conflict. During the gaza strip there is hope here that the hopes in cairo will ease their mind. He lost his house and five of his relatives. The past and the future buried under the republic. I want to be respected and for people to live like everyone else in the world. I would like them to be able to cross the border and not be humiliated. Is this a life . Reporter just a reminder of who used to live here just a few weeks ago. Whether the ceasefire holds or not, for those who lost everything it will take years to recover. Among the main demands put forward by the palestinians, there will be a sea port to be built as soon as possible. There were so many problems. It would create jobs. Excavation work started i in 2000 with the agreement of the israelis but then stopped a few months later when the fighting started. Now the revival of the plan is seen as crucial in ending the month long conflict. Its not clear yet if israel will concede to it now or later but after so much death and destruction gazaens know that peace will have to be mended one stitch at a time. Al jazeera, gaza. Well, we across throug cross through gaza and go to the palestinians authority. Tell us what progress has been made in the tucks with cairo . No final agreement has been reached, and i think there has been expected because the big gap between two lists of demands that were represented by the palestinians. So have things been taken off the table . We heard from our correspondents that there were leaks that perhaps the sea port and airport were not discussed until later. Is that your understanding . Well, i dont think it was only that. To tell you the truth, i dont think this should be the crucial issue. I think people who care about permanent tranquility, they should consider the root cause of all of this. Lets say that they saw the problem of the crossings, and maybe the buffer zone, and restrictions on movement. As long as the occupation continues to exist all of these arrangements remain uncertain. What im trying to get at, we know the broad problems theyre trying to deal with, but what im trying to get at whether there has progress. At least this time there is a real negotiation, and they were optimistic. That was yesterday. Do you think there is some progress on certain bits of areas where it will make a difference, and will we see the ceasefire extended, the current one. Well, this is the max that we should hope for. Maybe if were lucky we will see an extension through the truce so the parties will have an additional opportunity to try to work out an arrangement. It sounds extremely difficult because the israelis insist on bringing the situation back t, and this condition to the arrangements of the 2012. Thats not going to be enough, and this will not create or sustain any truce or tranquility to the region. One other demilitarization of hamas and other militant groups, is that something that you think is possible . Well, i dont think the palestinians are ready to even put this issue on the table. They will not discuss it. That was the agreement among the members of the palestinian delegation who went to cairo. This is linked to the end of the occupation and the palestinians will never agree to even discussing this issue. This is a final resolution of the conflict issue, and i dont think the palestinians will be willing or ready to even discuss this issue right now. We heard today the british Prime Minister has confirmed britain is going to transport some munitions to fight the Islamic State fighters. Do you think the kind of help that has been announced will be enough to help the kurdish fighters against the Islamic State group . What we need is a concerted effort. The airlift. The air drops of aid and the airstrikes by the americans, these are all very welcome and vital. Vital in the fight against the Islamic State, and vital in helping and can youing the revenges. But theyre not really the ultimate answer. What we need on a much bigger scale like in 1991 where a safe haven wa. Do they need to put boots on the ground . There were a few people in Iraqi Kurdistan at the time but really very, very few. Were not asking for boots on the ground. Were asking for much stronger airstrikes. Catastrophic complacency, along with americas leadership and france, the world will be galvanized. Maybe we need Something Like u. N. Resolution 688 which started the big operations in the 90s. What about the political vacuum, Nouri Almaliki is refuse to go step down and there has been a successor appointed. Does that counsel the problem . I think Prime Minister al maliki is on the way out. He may not believe it, but he is. Many have come out to support the Prime Minister. And many iraqis and crucially iran has supported haider al abadi. I dont know under what grounds Nouri Almaliki expects to stay. Its quite rich for someone who ran roughshod over the iraqi constitution is now hiding behind it. Im asking is the delay, is he making fight for the Kurdish People on the ground harder . Does it have a practical consequence . Not militarily. Fighting isis with the help from britain, france, the u. S. And hopefully other countries will help to continue with that fight. But were fighting on two fronts or three fronts actually. One is mil militarily, the humanitarian front and the political front. Thank you for coming in to talk. Thank you.
