And the government struggles to contain the ebola virus in sierra leon. First, though, lets go to the gaza strip, and the uns most senior human rights official says israel seems to be deliberately defying international law. More than 1400 people have been killed most of them civilians. The latest attack has killed another eight people. Well the uns human rights commissioner says israel should be held accountable for possible war crimes. Well get the latest on the ground in a moment. And well hear from israel when the cabinet has made it clear that the offensive will continue. The Un Security Council has been in emergency session in new york to talk about how dreadful the situation is becoming there, and the reports that israeli war jets are in action again this time in the central part of gaza. We can talk to our correspondent about the very latest, and nicole, bring us right up to date. Were getting these reports that say that perhaps eight people have died . Reporter thats right. Thats the information that we have as well. These two attacks have taken place in the last hour. First it was an air strike, four people were killed. Now were getting reports of another four people killed, were trying to ascertain whether or not that was an air strike or tank shelling, because both are continuing across the gaza are strip. There have been other air strikes taking place as well, two separate air strikes in the middle of gaza city. One killed three people, and another air strike killed two people. So still a very difficult day in gaza, the sense that its not safe anywhere. We can hear shelling from the ships on the coast, we know there is still combat going on along the eastern flank, the border with israel as well as air strikes in different parts of gaza. We have also heard rockets coming out of gaza towards israel. They are saying they have higher inned rockets towards telaviv, as well as two other areas. So its really kind of picked up in the last couple of hours. Nicole, the israeli go is saying that they are intending to keep up with their operation until they have degraded all of the tunnels or as many as they possibly can. Are you seeing any evidence of what the israeli army is doing on the ground in gaza . Well, were seeing the evidence of what they are doing in these residential and civilian areas. Its easy to see cars hit by air strikes, houses, mosques, schools, infrastructure, electricity, et cetera, but as for what they are doing on the border areas with the tunnels, thats a bit more difficult to get to. That entire area is a highly dangerous combat zone. The United Nations says that more than 44 of gaza is now off limits, so to go into that area, theres tense shelling and fighting going on. Its very dangerous. We know there has been heavy shelling and air strikes taking place in the border areas, where its believe ed these tunnels are. And for the moment everyone is keeping out of there. All right. Nicole thank you very much for that. So it seems that Benjamin Netenyahu, the israeli Prime Minister is saying that the military wont end its operations in gaza until these cross border tunnels are destroyed, and thats despite the growing International Call for an end to the fighting. James bayes reports from west jerusalem. Reporter despite the mounting death toll and the growing International Criticism of israel the countrys Prime Minister was uncompromising, the military operation will continue in hamass tunnels are destroyed. Translator as of now we have neutralized dozens of terrorists tunnels, and we are determined to complete this mission with or without a ceasefire, and i will not agree to any proposal that does not allow the idf to complete this work. Reporter the latest attack on a un school where thousands were sheltering left 19 people dead. The un says israeli shells were the cause. The top human rights official says she detects a pattern of deliberate action. The shelling of houses means a violation of israelis obligation to protect the right to housing, right to food, right to clean water of gazans, even as an occupying force. Reporter Benjamin Netenyahu doesnt seem to be taking much notice of that criticism, and cares the most about the advice from his generals and domestic Public Opinion and for now that seems to be solidly behind the operations. I think that yes, we should continue to complete with all of the tunnels, but actually implant our security very hard. We fighting for our lives. We, israel, want to live. Hamas want to die. Reporter as the israeli on slot in gaza continues, theres still some diplomatic activity taking place behind the scenes, but any hope of a ceasefire seems have to reseeded for now. We can speak now to a resident where we have heard of there being israeli war plane activity. He join us live now. Thank you for talking to us. Can you tell us what has happened to your area . Well, a car was targeted and that resulted in the death of five people, and there were another house who [ inaudible ] to evacuate and then they destroyed the house. Who were the people traveling in the car, and who lived in the house . Well i heard they couldnt identify the people in the car because they were they were in pieces actually, they couldnt find anyone in the car. And the house, i heard it was for family called [ inaudible ] family. And of course the Israeli Military will say that these people were either engaged in hostile activities or were very close to the location where hostile activities were taking place. To your knowledge, would that be the case in either of these instances . Well, for the car, im almost sure that the people in that car, they were either leaving their house or in the area where they live because of the amount of shelling, so they were scared and running from the war to a safer place, but they dont let them get to that place, and they kill them in the middle. So there were no people who are engaged in any kind of hostile activity against israel in that car. They were just scared people like the rest of us who doesnt know where to go, and this in this war. Give us an idea about the situation in your area. What is happening there more generally . Well, you look, every five minutes you are hear either a rocket exploding in the neighborhood or shelling of the tanks which is not really far from where we are right now. I guess its like two kilometers to the east from where we are. And yesterday they targeted a house 15 meters from where i am, and they killed a child, and injured his mother who was pregnant and also the infant who wasnt born yet, and these people, their father works in a bank. They are civilance who have nothing to do with anything thats going now. And the major problem now that we are facing that there is no electricity for the last three days, which means that theres no water for the people who are living here, or actually this problem is general for the gaza strip. Okay. No electricity for the last three days. Thank you very much. Thank you very much indeed for telling us about the situation there in your part of the gaza strip. Thank you very much. So pretty grim conditions being endured by that resident and indeed the rest of the residents of the gaza strip. Lets talk to kim vinnell now. And despite, it seems a growing feeling generally about the humanitarian situation affecting the residents of gaza, it seems as though Prime Minister netenyahu and his cabinet are determined to press on for now at least. Thats right. Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netenyahu very set as we heard earlier, set on continuing to destroy this network of tun else. He said with or without a ceasefire. So the Israeli Military is telling us they have discovered more than 30 tunnels, and destroyed around half of them. The analysts will tell you that even the military was surprised at the extent of this tunnel neck net network. But more and more were seeing tunnels inside the gaza strip being targeted, which is one of the reasons why were seeing Ground Troops move into the strip. The question is when will enough be enough . Even in netenyahus own statement he said we will continue to target these tunnels but there can be no guarantee of 100 success. So there will be a point at which netenyahu will have to look for an exit strategy, but its unlikely it will be until the troops can pull out and claim to have destroyed the majority of these tunnels, and what were hearing from military sources at the moment is it could be anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Thank you very much. Kim vinnell, giving us a view from west jerusalem. Now to the United States in new york, and specifically the Security Council who has been meeting to talk about the humanitarian crisis in gaza, and the session as it assembled heard from the Un Relief Agency that was hit by an israeli shell in which nine people were killed. Diplomats have now adjourned, and they are having behind closed do consultations. Kimmer willy has been following develops at the un today. And interestingly really, kimberly, this meeting was called as an emergency gathering, wasnt it, by the jordanian ambassador, and they only heard a couple of statements and then they adjourned. So what was that all about . Well, we did hear a couple of statements, but what was really noticeable about this emergency meeting is the fact that the humanitarian situation has really been elevated and is what is on the minds of these member countries on the United NationsSecurity Council. As you point out, they are now in closed consultations where the briefings are ongoing. In the open session part of meeting there was a briefing about valerie amos, who made some very key points, she condemned the attack on the school, the un school, the shelter where 3300 palestinians came under fire by israel, called this is a violation of international law, and called on both israel and hamas to comply with their international obligations. Following that meeting as you point out, the meeting did break up, and there was a briefing. Two reporters, statements, perhaps would be a better way of calling it, made to reporters by the israeli ambassador to the United Nations and the Palestinian Ambassador who said that at this point he calls the situation in gaza, genocide. Theres really no safe place for anyone to hide and the entire population is under attack. That is something the israeli ambassador disputes. No israeli soldier intenti intentionally targets civilians as you saw with the incidents on the beach, israel does not shy away there accepting responsibility. Members of the International Community have been quick to condemn israel but slow to condemn hamas for its war crimes. Also at the beginning of the briefing, i heard valerie amace say that israel faced rocket fire. Israel faced rocket fire . From who . Hamas. And also i totally agree with the sentiment of our people in the gaza strip that they feel that the International Community is failing them. They are not coming to put their weight on the line and to say enough is enough, and this genocide cannot be tolerated and should be stopped immediately. Now its unclear just what exactly will happen next as this meeting wraps up. There is a draft resolution that is being floated put forward by jordan, but it is very unlikely at this point that the the council will react. Right now it usually requires the willingness of the United States, historically we have seen the u. S. Come out in favor of israel when it comes to constraining the actions of israel. So at this point, still unclear. Were still waiting to see. All right. Thank you. Kimberly, thank you. Still to come, rescue workers dig frantically looking for survivors after a landslide buries a complete village in western india. Israeli aggression. Israel says it will continue its attack on gaza. Eight palestinians were killed in two attacks today. The un high commissioner for human rights says it appears that israeli is intentionally breaking international law. The Un Security Council has been holding a emergency session on gaza. They called for daily humanitarian pauses, until a longtime ceasefire could be achieved. The longer the conflict continues the more desperate the conditions become. Electricity has almost been cut off completely, and that means water is not being pumped and that has lead to severe short e shortages. Reporter this refugee camp was hit by an israeli air strike. Beside the mosque is a Drinking Water station that tens of thousands of people used to depend on. The air strike destroyed i generator. Everywhere you go in gaza, people proud around water trucks to fill their containers. Unsure of when the next delivery will come. Lets move to ukraine now, and the organization for security and cooperation in europe, says its monitors have finally reached the crash site of mh17. Fighting in the eastern part of ukraine had prevented them from safely getting to the area for over a week now. The team was accompanied by four dutch and australian aviation experts. 298 people died when the plane was shot down near a village two weeks ago. Barnaby phillips is in donetsk with the latest. So a small time of osce observers were able to reach the crash site today. Thats the first time in several days that they have been able to do so, but their journey there was long, far from straightforward, moving through a combat area, and we understand that there have been artillery strikes in the immediate facility of where mh 17 came down. So it does not necessarily mean that a door has been opened and this long awaited investigation will now proceed smoothly. Tragically we believe there are the bodies of many dozens of people or the remains at least of many dozens of people in the vicinity of the crash site. The Ukrainian Parliament has given these foreign investigators authority for up to a year in the area, and several hundred can go there and some can be armed. That all sounds wonderful in theory, it doesnt tally with the reality on the ground, which is that a vicious war is going on between the government and prorussian separatists and the area around the crash site itself is of great strategic importance. The west africa Ebola Outbreak has now killed 729 people. In sierra leone, liberia, and guinea. Sierra leon has declared a state of emergency, and ordered in the army to try to enforce a quarantine. Reporter these are the stringent protective measures that medics in liberia have to undertake before they can treat ebola patients. They are particularly at risk of infection, but now the fear of ebola spreading to the Wider Community has forced the government to institute its own measures. The president ordered the closure of all schools. A thorough cleaning process for all public buildings on friday, and one month compulsory for all nonessential staff. She emphasized how important it is for people to actress ponsableably. Protect yourself. Listen to the health workers. Abide by the rules. Believe it is real. Go out and air the message to wherever you are. Reporter ebola is transmitted through infected bodily fluids. The most efficient way its transmitted, people who are infected and they get directly in contact to bodily fluids, vomit, blood, diarrhea, and fec feces. And thats why were seeing such an explosion of cases. Reporter that has prompted the call of 343 peace corps volunteers in the area. The idea that the virus could cross continents is worrying officials. We have been meeting with the contacts on the level of the contact they had, and we have been advising them on the very need for them to restrict their movements. And they all of them have temperatures to monitor their body temperatures in the morning and in the evening, and then, of course, they all have full contacts as well as our Field Service workers monitoring the contacts. Reporter but the man who first identified the virus believes the risk of infection by casual contact is remote. I wouldnt be worried to sit next to season with the virus in the tube, as long as they dont vomit on you operator but aid agencies say this outbreak is now out of control. Heavy rains in india are hampering rescue efforts after a mud slide. At least 38 people were killed when a wall of mud, covered an entire village. The authorities fear the death toll could reach 150. Three al jazeera journalists have now spent 215 days in an egyptian prison. Last month, Mohammed Fahmy and peter greste were given seven year sentences. Baher mohamed was also given seven years plus an additional three years because he had a spent bullet in his possession which he picked up at a protest. They are accused of helping the outlawed muslim brotherhood. Al jazeera continues to demand their release. Now in a press conference the parents of peter greste pleaded for justice and continued attention on their sons case. We passionately and absolutely know that a grave and very serious injustice has taken place in peters case, and we wont shy away from professing that position as long as we can.
