Israelis have been told today to prepare for a Long Campaign against hamas in gaza. Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu comments came hours after children were killed in a hospital and at a nearby park. United nations secretarygeneral ban kimoon made an appeal. Nick schifrin is live in gaza city. Given the Prime Ministers comments are you seeing any kind of an escalation in the Israeli Offensive . We are hearing and being told about an escalation, toinl. First otony. Those lights behind me are israel. Everything else between here and there is gaza. Its in a blackout, you hear drones, pounding, boom boom boom, artillery, tank strikes or f16 strikes. That is consistently been the place where a lot of rockets are launched. From here into israel and therefore, a lot of strikes are in that neighborhood. What we heard from Prime Minister netanyahu is a warning basically for his own people, for israel to be prepared and to be patient for while the Israeli Military continues his attacks here. Translator we knew we would have difficult days. This is a difficult and painful day. Stamina and determination are required to continue in the struggle against a murder oust group that aspires to destroy us. I said and i say, we must be prepared for a Long Campaign. Reporter Long Campaign, one more evidence that this campaign is escalating as we speak. All foreign journalists in gaza city have been told to stay in their hotels tonight, too risk 80 to leave. That clearly indicating they are expanding their ground offensive. Gaza, 8 children among the 10, what can you tell us about those attacks . Reporter we were there at that refugee camp about 20 or 30 minutes after that this strike and you sawr saw a real scene f sadness, horror panic. As you just said tony eight of the victims were victims. They were playing on the street. This is eid. The end of the holy month of ramadan. They were playing like most kids were trying to do, like christmas, a day of celebration and gifts. Residents brought me to the site of that strike, it was very shallow, only two or three inches. We saw shrapnel gut some cars and go about 20 to 30 feet up on the buildings right next to it. Since then we have had competing claims for why that strike occurred. Immediately, israeli officials said it was not us. This was a rocket fired from gaza towards israeli israel that landed short, and as well as in a hospital here. Hamas immediately denying that saying they have evidence it was israeli shrapnel that killed those children. Tonight competing claims but bottom line is eight or nine children died in that refugee strike. Nicholas question for you is there any progress on the diplomatic front to bring this conflict to an end . Reporter yes, sadly, not really, tony. Thats really the answer tonight or this afternoon. We just heard from secretary of state spokesman jen saki. She was defending the u. S. Efforts to try and find a ceasefire over the weekend. Israeli officials really criticizing john kerry saying he didnt know what he was doing. One of them saying, kerry is a friend of israel but with friends like these we would rather be speaking to our enemies. Kerry is talking to the intermediaries for turkey and qatar, they are all trying to get everyone to agree, on a ceasefire but both sides are saying no. We talked about why israel is still escalating here. They talk about more rockets being fired, more tunnels being found from gaza into israel. Until we get assurances, we are not going to sign any ceasefire and both sides sticking to their guns literally and not giving an inch and basically saying their not interested in peace right now. Nick schifrin in gaza. So do the protests, chicago in both sides of the conflict held dueling rallies. There are no reports of major problems there. Hundreds gathered near the United Nations to show their support of israel. John terret filed this report. Reporter as long as this conflict has gone on, there have been rallies in favor of the palestinian cause. Hearing their voice isnt heard, israeli supporters have begun hitting back. Protests like this one outside the body in manhattan, 10,000 strong. The United Nations unfortunately sometimes does not do the right thing and they say things that make no sense, condemning israel for taking military action to protect innocent civilians does not make sense. And ill tell you Something Else this military campaign protected millions of innocent palestinians as well as innocent israelis. Reporter what do you want to say for the world . That israel needs ostand up to protect itself, to protect the world. We understand when terrorism is out there we have to make a stand for peace and humanity and for the rights of everyone to live in a peaceful world. We stand united for israel. We want to make sure everybody gives as much support to israel as possible. Weve seen so many people delegitimize the jewish people, especially the at the time of the holocaust. Now theyre trying to delegitimize the jewish state as well as the people. It will not be tolerated. Reporter organizers say it is more likely there will be rallies like this in cities all over the world. Ordinary people having their say about whats happening in the middle east on both sides of the conflict. All the while a peace solution seems to elude world leaders. And as the fighting between israel and gaza escalates, two young men in florida hope their friendship can find a path to peace. One is a jew, the other is a palestinian. Natasha guinane, has the story. Natasha. We are in front of coc of congresswoman debby Wasserman Schultzs district. The last couple of weeks i. T. Has managed to find common ground. When they 20 somethings first met, shalom nystein began grilling mohamed on the palestinian conflict. I guess it was a way for us to i guess judge each other. That first conversation between an american jew and a palestinian american was the start of a six year friendship. Based on bonding over the typical male things such as sports and dating. But both young men also have families living through the israeli palestine conflict and feel a desire to engage each other on whats happening there. Have you got feelings that changed as a result of your friendship . Absolutely. I didnt look on mohamed as he wanted to kill me. When i met an israeli that could agree with me on certain issues, i fount our commonalities outweighed our differences. Reporter emotions are especially charged. Talking about their friendship has stirred hatred among their respective friends. I consider you my brother. The same goes for you shalom. Weve had a lot of judgment and push back but weve had a lot of support. I think what were doing could hopefully lead to something special. Reporter the men are passionate about their beliefs and fiercely disagree on a number of points. Israel has been fighting for its right to exist and has been since its inception. After all that, palestine also has fought for its right to exist. Reporter israel needs security. Hamas needs to stop firing rockets and the palestinians need equality and a country to call their own. Based on principle, agreements are going to be the foundation of whats going to solve this conflict. I do agree with that. Despite their friendship these young men have not met one anothers families. They hope one day theyll bring them together. Theyll keep promoting their message of peace on social media. Natasha, in broward county, florida. Thank you natasha. United nations says more than 167,000 palestinians in gaza have been displaced. There you see the number there. On the israeli side, at least 55 have been killed, most of them soldiers. Fighting in gaza comes as muslims throughout the world celebrate eid. Most people in gaza are not integrating as Charles Stratton tells us. The resilience of the people of gaza is astounding. After a month of fasting, foregoing food and water all day, they buy whatever gifts they can afford. Eid is a special time for children but there is little if anything to celebrate here. She shopping for her sevenyearold son. We cant celebrate eid under these conditions but the children want toys. They dont understand the bombs and attacks. Reporter a walk through pediatric wards of shipper hospital is a shocking reality of the brutality of this war. She cannot move because she has shrapnel in her back and neck. This destroyed their family home in shujayea. How can we get this transferred home . She has been here for more than a week and her condition is critical. Eid is a traditional family time to come together. When you speak to the children in this hospital and their families you realize there is very, very little to celebrate in gaza at the end of this ramadan. In another ward we find threeyearold ahmed. The Israeli Military destroyed his familys home so he moved for safety to a school. Ahmed was injured when the Israeli Military targeted the school soon after. Translator there is going to be no eid this year because my house no longer exists. It was destroyed. We will try to make a shelter nearby but how can we celebrate eid like this . There is the sudden sound of an incoming missile. There were two attacks on the area nearby when we were in the hospital. A lantern from eid is a tiny reminder that this should be the time of joy. Before we left we met sixyearold rahma. And threeyearold marawan. His mother said their home was also flattened in an israeli attack. I want to stay here and look after my baby, there will be no eid this year. Charles stratton, al jazeera, gaza. The downing of mh17 may be a war crime. The fighting has increased between prorussian separatists and ukrainian forces. So much so, investigators have been forced to pull back from the crash site. This may amount to a war crime. Also the high commissioner says there is a need for a prompt and effective investigation. I think that is what needs to be done so as to establish the fact and circumstances of what has happened. Well, the planes flight data recorders are revealing more about what coughed the crash. Ukrainian official says the plane suffered massive decompression after being hit by a missile. Australian and dutch inspectors are leading the inspection about the speed of the probe. As Barnaby Phillips reports, crews were forced to turn back 20 miles from the crash. Set off again from donetske towards the crash site. But they didnt get very far. Artillery and gun fire in an area where the Ukrainian Army has been advancing. The inspection mission, more frustration. There is work to be done, it can only be done, if the guns are put down, we have no risk on our way. We are sick and tired being interrupted by gun fights, despite the fact we have agreed there should be a ceasefire. Reporter the u. N. Says the shooting down of the malaysian plane may be a war crime. But a nasty war has been raging for months in Eastern Ukraine and the people who live in this area are paying a heavy price. There has been a serious deterioration of this situation in the areas of these controlled still by these armed groups. These include abductions, detentions, torture, executions which are used to intimidate the population which is often held as hostage or trapped in this pocket of territories in the donetske and leufntion region. And luhansk region. The u. N. Says the separatists have detained more than 700 people, this person is one of them. They took our phones, cameras, they didnt let us call our relatives, anyone. They kept threatening us, wanted to shoot us. My friends wife is pregnant. He was telling them, my wife is pregnant, let me go, let me please call her. They would not let him. They put us on our knees. They did not give us food or water. There was not even a toilet. Reporter but the u. N. Says both sides have used heavy weapons in and around cities in the ukraine, this could be another violation of national law. We just tried to go to the town of horlivka, north of donetske. Whilst we were on the edge of the town we could see it coming under bombardment and we could see hundreds of vehicles full of people who were trying to flee but we were detained at a separatist checkpoint for several hours. We were not allowed to film. More weapons are pouring into the east. These are Government Troops prepare to advance. There is no diplomacy to bring this being fight to an end. Barnaby phillips, al jazeera, Eastern Ukraine. Commercial arbitration, Permanent Court of arbitration in the netherlands today says russia owes more than 50 million to gml limited. Thats the former majority leader of the yukos oil company. The court said the russian government took over yukos to silence an opponent of vladimir putin. A new plan to reform the department of veterans affairs, aims to fix delayed care and other problems that have plagued the va in recent years. Mike viqueria joins us and what can you tell us about the bill . Tony the final votes havent been called yet but we may have that rarest of occurrences on capitol hill. A bipartisan agreement what can be done to fix the va. Very fundamental reforms and who would have thought it tony, the socialist from vermont chairing the Senate Veterans affairs committee, Bernie Saunders, his counterpart on the house side jeff miller says this have an agreement to save this scandal plagued va. They were cooking the books there. Had waitmuch longer than the official version, had written down had accounted for. This was a scandal that spread across the country, and now now Bernie Saunders says they have a solution. They feel pretty good when the quality of care they are getting. I hear this all of the time. Problem we have with access were going to deal with it short term with emergency care, people going to private doctors and so forth. Longer term i hope the va will have the doctors, nurses and culture that makes sure that every veteran in this country gets Quality Health care when he or she needs it. Quick figures for you, 5 billion for doctors and nurses but the key stones, 10 billion to allow veterans, if they cant get an appointment within two weeks, to get care. The house of representatives has to act. Totally not offset by any cuts in the budget, tony. The thought is that the house will take this up. Is there a chance this could get through both chambers and to the president and signed before the recess . There is a chance. A version passed earlier. The recess starts on friday for the senate. 12 billion is deficit spending. Lets see how conservatives react to that tony. Mike viqueria. Thank you. Coming up. A candidate accusing his candidate of poking fun at the dead. David schuster in power politics. And the real life story of the bad kid may, may be headed to the big screen. Well, the trading week on wall street got off to okay, right . Not bad. The dow gained 22 points, the s p was up a tick or so but the nasdaq was down. In todays power politics, waiting 99 days before the mid term elections. The amount of money spent on political ads has set a record already. David schuster is here. Yes tony, according to multiple independent groups, the number from outside groups alone, six times as much in the same point in the 2010 mid terms. Through mid july, the number of senate commercials is now over 150,000. That is more than the total for the entire 2010 campaign. And keep in mind we havent reached the months of september and october when the ad buys usually go way up. Here is a taste of some of the latest ads. In the West Virginia race, natalie tenant has just released a commercial supporting the coal industry, different than democrats nationally. Ill stand up to both appeared who threaten ouparties. Kurt claussen has apologized to members of congress who testified at a hearing last week. The congressmen thought they were representative of the government of india. That became cringeworthy when the congressman began asking them questions. Just as your capitol is here to producing good paying jobs in the u. S. , id like there to be freedom of capitol so both sides are on the same territory and i ask cooperation from your government in so doing. Can i have that . I think your question is to the Indian Government and we certainly share your sentiments and we will certainly advocate that on behalf of the u. S. Of course. Okay lets see some progress. Very well handled, a lot of class shown by those officials who testified. Yes. He apparently shot showed up to the hearing late was not briefed to the staff and in the words of his staff, shot an air ball. Clunk. I love the guys on the panel smiling, saying dude, you you have no clue. A new plan to reform veterans affairs. Well talk to a whistle blower who exposed the problems with the department. Next. Well, congress unveiled a proposal today to overhaul the department of veterans affairs. Will provide approximately 17 billion to fix the departments medical program. Hire medical staff roughly 1. 5 billion, for new clinics across the country. The proposed changes come in response to the waiting list scandal that caused former va secretary Eric Shinseki to step down. One of the whistleblowers who helped exposed the phoenix va scandal, doctor, good to talk to you acknowledge thank you for your time. What do you think about the legislation . Half loaves, does it go far enough . What are your thoughts . I think its a good first step. Theres a lot more work to be done. It doesnt fix the Va Health Care system. It only addresses one problem within the Va Health System which is the access issues. It certainly doesnt address the poor patient care problems for the veterans already in the system. What are you most pleased with . Frankly im pleased that congress as dysfunctional as senator saunders said it was actually came to an agreement and didnt use there as opolitical football. This is trub truly a in terms of the speed this is almost light speed suspect it . As an employee who has been waiting 16 years for some kind of change, im finally glad to see light tet end of the tunnel. But theres still a lot to be done. What is the biggest unaddressed items on the list . First thing on my list is the whistleblower retaliation. Youre not allowing them to speak up for health and safety issues that they identify. Ive been contacted by physicians across the country with serious patient care problems that theyre at a frayed to talk about for fear of retaliation or being fired. The acting secretary send out a letter that says there will be no reprisal. No one believes that. You mentioned it here, quality of care issues as well need to be addressed. Expand on your thoughts on those two issues. Well, some of the instances that physicians have told me about are, as i mentioned in the hearing, a facility thats bed sore free only because administration forbid its being documented. We have cases of cancer where it is clearly evidence why it is evident for years on x ray. But physicians missed it. And doses of radiation are unknown when they get a routine x ray. Wow. You wanted mental issues addressed in a more complete way. Talk about your concerns there. There are several concerns. One of them is the dod back door access to the computer system. Ive had reservists coming back from a combat theater telling me theyre fine, they have no nightmares, no flash back issues. When i spoke to them off the record, they told me that the common understanding is that the dod will go into their records unknown to them. Pull out information. Then use it against them to interrupt their guardsman or their reservist career. I actually checked on this and from january 2013 until mid april 2014, 47,000, more than 47,000 times sensitized records were accessed by the dod. That doesnt count the number of nonsensitized records that were accessed. To my knowledge, no one is looking at this and if the reservists and guards melon told me were true this is one of the largest hipaa violation in years. They are afraid to come into the va for care because they dont want it to come back at them at a later date. I see. Well youre good at this doctor. If we are looking at the legislation thats being proposed today, were talking 5 billion will be used to hire medical staff, check that, thats a positive to you . Thats positive because we definitely need more hands in the kitchen this time. However, they mentioned a commission or possible oversight, but that seems to be if the va is operating efficiently. Hopefully theyre using the moneys appropriated in a manner that is consistent with proper veteran care. Dr. Katherine mitchell is a doctor in the va system and one of the doctors that helped expose the situation in phoenix and for world. Thank you for your time. A Border Crossing is closed and community under quarantine. A large scale effort to stop the spread of ebola. Well talk about the World Health Organization next. America mobile app, available for your apple and android mobile device. Download it now the president of liberia is taking major steps now to stop the spread of ebola in that country. Border crossings are now closed, communities heavily affected by the virus are under quarantine. Liberia is one of three west african countries under ebola right now. At least 224 people have died in sierra leone. Guinea 394 people are dead. Jake ward joins us from San Francisco. Tell us about ebola and why it is prevalent in in this area of west africa . The notion of it restricted to part of west africa, it originates in fruit bats, according to scientists. Ebola hemorrhagic fever, causes you to rearrange the fluids within your body to sort of achieve stat stasis and in doint your organs fail. Substandard medical care is very much true in guinea, sierra leone, and liberia where weve seen 600 deaths so far. The passenger who died was very sick on the flight. What is the chance other passengers actually contracted it from him . That is one of the most sort of alarming reports. He was experiencing diarrhea on the flight according to reports. And the problem is, you are in very cramped conditions. With ebola you have to be in direct contact with bodily fluids. That is the most important to understand. It doesnt pass by breathing next to somebody. You have to touch bodily fluid and get it into your own mucous membranes. There are passengers missing and thats what authorities are trying find, thats what is so scary about that passengers. Two americans who became in n infected how did that happen and how are they doing . A doctor and aid worker were wearingfully protective equipment, there is a sort of Rapid Assessment of why they would have contracted it. They will be looking at those procedures very closely. Jake ward, thank you. Joining us from sierra leone is tarek, an official with World Health Organization. Good to speak with you. Your team is on the ground and for all of us who are watching were trying oget a ham on the size and the dimension and the scope of this outbreak, how bad it is. I see the numbers but is there another context you can provide for us that helps us get a handle on this outbreak . Well, tony, this is a very serious outbreak. Its very serious not only because of the numbers that you have mentioned but also because of the geographical spread. In the Ebola Outbreak the thing we need to do is to find every sick person and then find all those people who have been in close contact with those infected people as my predecessor has said who entered into contact with the body fluids of the infected people. To do that there are a lot of procedures put in place. To enter into a treatment center, so they do not incur the spread to other people, a Surveillance System to track down all those people who have in contact, we need lab capacity and lab facilities, it is so challenging. Let me jump in before i lose you, i want to try one more question with you. So the two American Health care workers in liberia, according to samaritans purse the organization they were working for, they were wearing protective equipment and followed safety guidelines. Does the w. H. O. Know how they became infected . This is something to be looked at. What we really need to understand is that Health Workers are really one of the most vulnerable groups. Since the beginning of this outbreak 100 Health Workers have been infected and half of them die. So what we need to do is to train them and especially local Health Workers who have not been dealing with ebola before, we need to train them and quip equp them. So they can focus on their own safety so that is why we are trying to mobilize as much as we can at the World Health Organization experts who can come from around the world to help with this outbreak. On the ground there in sierra leone. Tarek, appreciate your time. Trending on social media, a big apology by a sports caster.
