Reporter youre absolutely right. This is the First Anniversary for the south sudanese. This country, a decision made outside of south sudan, topped the list one particular think tanks index of the most fragile states in the world. It replaced somalia. You ran through some of them. There are conflicts in all sorts of regions around the country. There is famine looming because people dont plant on time, not because there is a food crisis here, because this is a fertile land with lush rain. The army is doing its best for the state. The president just finished his speech, and thats why you hear the band strike up behind me. A lengthy speech where at one point he said he wants to ask the international nations, the Regional Group that are trying to be helpful in ushering this country through a negotiated peaceful government how much longer i have to keep the army in the barracks when theyre attacked. In his view the problem lies with the rebels and with the rebels the problem lies with the president. One other thing about todays independence celebrations, we were expecting many dignitaries to come. In the end only one head of state from outside of south sudan showed up, and that was the president of uganda, who, of course, has many troops stationed here essentially as the president said in his speech keeping the peace here. Without them, he says south sudan would have lost many, many more lives. A big thank you for the presence of a neighboring country for keeping law and order in south sudan. Dont just take it from me. South sudan is a young and vibrant native that has just got independence, and theres a problem that we have. So at this time i hope the difference between the second anniversary and the third anniversary was just in a sense that we were just celebrating when we were having the second anniversary, we were one nation. Because of this crisis that has happened now, we celebrated it because we are a different nation and thats why we put in the interview one nation and one people. We want this nation to be one so that we have to prosper, and i hope peace will come in. So the difference youre giving me today is because i was there because of the crisis that brought me here. I come here and see theres a big difference. You see the number of dignitaries that have been invited to attend the third anniversary compared to the second anniversary where we have so many heads of state. Reporter many people weve spoken to have said, okay, its still worth celebrating Independence Day because things will never be as bad as they were before south sudan separated from the north, from sudan itself, and the price they paid for that separation over the years were very high, but theyre also very gloomy about the prospects for the country at the moment. How do you feel and why . I feel although we just gained independence and because of this at the anniversary, we will still gain our momentum and will return back to our nation. Because of the political classes or the political clashes that have brought this, this happened from the political crisis. I hope in time we can resolve it, and we begin our peace and i think we will be one and we will progress and we will fwan our momentum and our independence will be in the right position. Officials at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in japan have invited tv crews to showcase the underground wall theyre building to some radioactive water from leak from the facility. Reporter for years after the meltdown water is one of the biggest challenging at the Tokyo Electric Power company. It needs to flush the reactors, and doing this makes the water radioactive and it mixes with fwround water and seeps out of the facility in the sea. Thats why tepco started a containment wall around the contaminated site. Its driving 1500 pipes into the ground around and beneath the reactors. Theyre filled with coolant on freeze the surrounding earth and water into a wall of ice. Tepco has already tested the technique at the site but ran into trouble when it failed to cool the earth enough for it to freeze. This time it says its working better. Translator the ice wall itself is being tested, and in those cases weve seen that the ground itself does freeze. So i myself am not that worried that it will not go well.
