Farms and others try to get to the water that they want free. Stephanie stanton reports. Reporter in the middle of the desert, 60 miles outside los angeles, water is plentiful and farmers flourishing. Eugene owns this lush 680 acre alfalfa farm, a far cry from drought stricken farms north, where water is a scarce commodity. I wish they didnt have have to go through this. Californians have been fighting for water rite, a battle between have and have not thanks to designations by the state dating to the late 1800s, some landowners have unlimited access, and others have been required to conserve. These have been established for a long time. People that own the right invested a lot of money in the operations. I dont think they should be cut off. 3800 entities have senior water right. Half are major corporations, including the states biggest utility pacific gas and electric. It cut water delivers to farms and cities by 95 . Senior right owners are exempt. People there first have a prior claim to the water that is allocated. Add to that senior water rite holders are allowed to estimate how much water they use, so the state doesnt have an accurate picture of how much water they consume. This is one of four pumps that pull water from an underground well to irrigate crops. With an unlimited water force, the farm has been unaffected by the drought. Eugene, selfreporting, welcomes stricter monitoring. In times of drought its logical that we know how much water is use. He said it was an honour killing. She mar idea without onsent. More than 800 women in pakistan died. The author of red, white and muslim joins us from denver, colorado. Welcome. Thank you, good evening. Give me your reaction to this story. Im shocked and does gusted. Im horrified by this. Im familiar with the area. Its amazing that Something Like this could happen. It is surprising the numbers here. 800 women killed in this manner just last year. Yes, unfortunately. There is a tribal attitude about women and who they can marry, and with the familys consent. Unfortunately we have this unfortunate practice of honour killings that seems to be escalating. And normally you see, unfortunately, acid attacks. This was different for the levels of violence. Gruesome. Its different with the stoning of this woman, under law, in some of these crimes, arent the women whipped 400 times, or get 100 lashes . Well, Different Countries have different laws. I believe in pakistan, you know, i am unfamiliar if there is a flogging or whipping. However, i think that core thing to remember is that technically what this young woman did was not against the law. Actually, what the her father did was against the law, and her family members, and its important that it be prosecuted. So what we are dealing with is tradition, culture that is so hard to fight. What happens is when this young woman did a marriage of her own consent the family is worried it will affect their reputation in the community. They are under social pressure to convey that they do not approve of her behaviour, and it results in what we saw, which is very sad. I guess the question is why dont more women and men in pakistan and other countries, where this sort of activity, horrible activity exists, dont stand up and say and do something about it . We do see people standing up and protesting against this. Probably in pakistan we havent seen a reaction immediately right now because last night was the night of power for muslims, and most muslims thats the night its believed the prophet mohammed went on the night journey to heaven and visited others. Most last night were in an allnight prayer vigil and probably were finding out the news similar to when we found it out. I believe once things settle down youll see a big outcry. In the past pakistanis condemned these types of things. We need to come up with a plan on how to engage with the people that are believing in these practices. I think you see it more amongst rural population, lower income, or middle class. We need to engage pakistanis to figure out, and people like myself, how do we stop the attitude and move to a different view of what women do. Thats what i was going to ask you. I mean its not an isolated incident. You had 800 killed in pakistan alone. Its not like just getting upset about this issue. How do you change the views . Well its a very complex and difficult problem. You are dealing with the law, where some legislative reform is needed, such that the family cannot get away with dealing with this. You are dealing with the prosecution of it, and an educational issue. A lot of acts are performed under the disguise of islam. You see people doing it that belong to other religions, there needs to be education, and that islam is against these things. You are dealing with multilevel issue, and system wide across the community. We had a lot of success in other countries relating to the issue of female circumcision, and the model engaging with local people, and talking to them about their culture, and it takes a brave father to say this is not going to happen to my daughter are, ill be the first. We see the news, but its isolated. It happens, but there has been 800 reported cases, which means there may be more unreported. Theres many good individuals that this will shock them, and i hope that this will, as other incidents spark outrage. Its good that we are discussing this. Attention in the west brings attention to this issue. We all hope that this practice end, and ends soon. Great to have you on the programme. Thank you. Science and Technology Correspondent jacob ward explains. Reporter how can a 6foot tall stripping bean of a man throw a fast boll 200 Miles Per Hour. It has to do with a kinetic chain, transfers of energy through the body, and thats what he does well. It begins when he resists gravity, storing the energy before putting the foot down. When he drops the energy and releases the mek jpiccal force, he begins a process in which it moves up through the body, rotating through the trunk, over the shoulder at thousands of degrees a second, moves through the elbow and releases the ball for some of the fastest heats that the game has seep. The difference between a 90 mile per hour fast ball and one that hits tripple digits is strategic. In 0. 4 of a second. It will travel from the mound to the plate. For every mile an hour faster that it cap be thrown. Hell trick the batter in an amazing and quantifiable way. If you get the Miles Per Hour as a matter of perception wrong by 2 mills an hour, that will be a strike or a foul ball. So the heat that he can consistently throw is always going to be within that margin of error a messes a player up.
