It is surprising the numbers here. 800 women killed in this manner just last year. Yes, unfortunately. There is a tribal attitude about women and who they can marry, and with the familys consent. Unfortunately we have this unfortunate practice of honour killings that seems to be escalating. And normally you see, unfortunately, acid attacks. This was different for the levels of violence. Gruesome. Its different with the stoning of this woman, under law, in some of these crimes, arent the women whipped 400 times, or get 100 lashes . Well, Different Countries have different laws. I believe in pakistan, you know, i am unfamiliar if there is a flogging or whipping. However, i think that core thing to remember is that technically what this young woman did was not against the law. Actually, what the her father did was against the law, and her family members, and its important that it be prosecuted. So what we are dealing with is tradition, culture that is so hard to fight. What happens is when this young woman did a marriage of her own consent the family is worried it will affect their reputation in the community. They are under social pressure to convey that they do not approve of her behaviour, and it results in what we saw, which is very sad. I guess the question is why dont more women and men in pakistan and other countries, where this sort of activity, horrible activity exists, dont stand up and say and do something about it . We do see people standing up and protesting against this. Probably in pakistan we havent seen a reaction immediately right now because last night was the night of power for muslims, and most muslims thats the night its believed the prophet mohammed went on the night journey to heaven and visited others. Most last night were in an allnight prayer vigil and probably were finding out the news similar to when we found it out. I believe once things settle down youll see a big outcry. In the past pakistanis condemned these types of things. We need to come up with a plan on how to engage with the people that are believing in these practices. I think you see it more amongst rural population, lower income, or middle class. We need to engage pakistanis to figure out, and people like myself, how do we stop the attitude and move to a different view of what women do. Thats what i was going to ask you. I mean its not an isolated incident. You had 800 killed in pakistan alone. Its not like just getting upset about this issue. How do you change the views . Well its a very complex and difficult problem. You are dealing with the law, where some legislative reform is needed, such that the family cannot get away with dealing with this. You are dealing with the prosecution of it, and an educational issue. A lot of acts are performed under the disguise of islam. You see people doing it that belong to other religions, there needs to be education, and that islam is against these things. You are dealing with multilevel issue, and system wide across the community. We had a lot of success in other countries relating to the issue of female circumcision, and the model engaging with local people, and talking to them about their culture, and it takes a brave father to say this is not going to happen to my daughter are, ill be the first. We see the news, but its isolated. It happens, but there has been 800 reported cases, which means there may be more unreported. Theres many good individuals that this will shock them, and i hope that this will, as other incidents spark outrage. Its good that we are discussing this.
