New york city covered in white, and after a few hours of light rain this jack, more snow tonight for the east coast, a day off for federal government workers some people even using skis to get around today, and in the carolinas and georgia the problem is power. Downed electrical lines left hundreds and thousands without power. Jennifer london is live tonight with more on that, jennifer . Well john we havent seen snow in a couple and unusual, but it is the amount and number of storms that is making this winter one for the record books. With snow totals on par with snow ma get done. Hungs of where the storm is still dumping heavy snow. Some areas can see as much as two feet. In new york, commuters slid through nearly a foot of snow. I specially like it, but i know a lot of people are tired of us. The steady rain has following the snow, turn manager streets into a messsy slush, as temperatures drop that slush will harden into ice. Well, air travelers arent above feeling the effects of this storm, more than 6,000 flights across the country were canceled and that means travelers as far west are feeling the impacts. They are saying we can see another 12 to 18inches tonight, until the storm exits the region, which will be friday night, everyone is hoping at least. All right, jennifer london, thank you. This brought the nations capitol to a humidity. Federal offices were closed today, so were schools and businesses. Of course, transportation in and out of d. C. Was paralyzed as well, and all of those problemmed had a Ripple Effect as jennifer mentioned. John is in d. C. With more on that, john . Yeah, well, john, good etching. Four hours after we last spoke, it is stimsnowing here. It did stop for a while, be uh thats a function of this storm. As you can see, the snow is quite big at a moment. As far as the travel isen canned, well, the 22 states effected by this giant storm, tramping was a no no for most of thursday, and the headline, of course, the Airline Industry 6,700 Flights Canceled on thursday alone. According to flight aware. Com, and the airplanes are in the wrong place, so it will take them a while to get them back, so there will be delays into the weekend, now, in this part of the world, between here and baltimore, the domestic airport, and in virginia dulles the airport runways have all reopened now after being closed for pretty much a day, but again the planes are in the wrong place, so expect delays. It will take about four hours to get there, on the northeast corridor amtraks busiest rout, very very limited service today, thursday, with people scrambling at Union Station to get onboard every train that released going north. On the eastern mart, that is the warm wither. On the back side. To hotels for the evening you can see the warnings are still in effect. 20 20 04 h four to 28inches, john. Continues to track this one, the snow is melting in the south, but Power Outages still a big problem for the southeast. Ice left hundreds of thousands without leng trystty, and heat, in georgia and south carolina, hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses still without power, a day after the storm hit, in North Carolina and virginia, tens of thousands of people are in the dark. In maryland, new jersey, new york, and massachusets electricity already out for several hundred customers. Look for those numbers to go up tonight, as the storm moves through the northeast. This releaptless winter has been a big test. From georgia to new york, mayors and governors have found themselves under fire for their storm response. Our Randall Pinkston joins us now with more on that. John, you know every winter event has its own challenges with its owndy. Tyes and so for elected officials even experienced ones sometimes theres a stumble. With each storm, officialed think they have a plan, only to discover that sometimes they are no match for mother nature. It was a grave situation. He fried to explain his decision to keep stores open. We were convinced that kids could get to school. Members have to go to work, they do not have a choice, and they need a safe option for their kids. Almost before the first beg, some parents and teachers blasted the move. The mayor believes that its dangerous enough for people to stay off the street, yet, he has children under the age of 18, mind you, many of them, to go to school. Retied army lieutenantluth agrees saying mayor dehas owe made the wrong call. Openingdea of opening the school so people can drop their kids off and you cant get the streets that is wrong. Thats a popularity contest. New yorks mayor is the latest elected official to catch grief from the public for the way authorities are coping with winter storms. Last month they were blamed for a major traffic jam, with School Children unable to get home. Hoping to avoided is aim debacle, North Carolina mayor made a blunt appeal. Dont put your stupid hat on. Protect yourself, protect your family, your neighbors. More North Carolinaians didnt hear the governor, or paid him no attention. Who was stuck in the storm. I guess i didnt learn a lesson, because i didnt think it would be that bad. Solution . Close the roads. Close the interstates crawling through the cities going through the state, and they close the state roads but putting troopers out there and politic the roads off. But it is a fine line, when a city shuts down and a stomp doesnt happen, politicians get blamed for overreacting. The bottom line, they often have to make tough calls and be prepared for complaints. Yeah, it has happened before, and will happen again. Thank you very much. During severe storms government officials have an obligation to keep the public informed. Many are relying on social media to get the word out. Governments are picking up on this to using social immediate yo to keep the public informed. And pressure to get the message straight to people that need it. North carolina fur example, their department of transportation used at least five plat you remember toes including facebook, sound cloud to tell people about Road Conditions and hazards. Not to mention tips for staying safe, during severe storms like this one. We spoke waylisa shell, the knew Media Coordinator for the North Carolina transportation on how social media is helping them serve their residents. Social media is effective because it is the way more and more people are getting their information, folks are tuning in to facebook and twitter, and they like being able i think to pick and choose the kinds of pages so they can get the information that is really interested and interesting to them. About current Road Conditions and any hazards that may be on the roads during a winter storm or perhaps as hurricane. We can also give people information on detours around accidents. Swell point them to our other online tools for keeping tabs on traffic and highway construction projects. H there are two of us that take turns. Monitoring the feeds. Getting out the emergency information. Keeping tabs on what folks are asking about, and what their concerns are. Also helps us with content, from one end of the state to the other. To be more responsive and transparent about what the state is doing to try to keep people safe. Social media being used in many different ways one Facebook Page created is a perfect example of social media at work. The idea of using social websites came together in less nan a day. A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine got trapped in atlanta, and so we were connected through social media with people, and we found this group that the atlanta folks has started. So when i saw what a mess charlotte was going to be, and a mess the whole state would be, i said why not start a group. And i was trying to tangle it out there but nobody took the bait. What were you trying to do . To connect people. Sometimes provide just comfort. A lot of it was saying i am stuck here, can anyone pick him up, can someone check the road condition, my husband is trying to get home. Who have you helped in. We have helped everyone from grandmother whose are concerned about their grandchildren tole mos concerned about foster kids. All kinds of family members. We tell them to call emergency help first. If someone is sick or hurt, or stranded we tell them to call the highway patrol, or to call the Ambulance Emergency Services thats our first thing, and then we just try to tell them we are here. You arent alone. My skeptical side comes out, you want to wish the best for people and about people, how can you vouch for any people that will help the folks in. Well, you just have to go on faith, i guess. I find that people are generally more good than bad. You have to put up your b. S. Detech door and deal with common sense. It is a terrific story, thank you for joining us and good luck. Crystal dempseys web page is still up tonight. Fusions fuel source is hydrogen, the most plentiful element in the universes. The Lawrence Livemore experienced employed lasers that focus enormous amounts of energy in billion of a second long pulses. Scientists did not reach the break through point they called ignition. This is what we see with our naked eye. We al you are seeping out artifacts underground, for three money miles in space. How does it work. It is really Pretty Amazing stuff. The use of satellites has completely changed the field of archaeology. It is the most exciting era for it. Able to uncover things. It is Something Else they didnt even know assisted.
