Something. In the u. S. House, the republicans widened majority for the biggest margin since the truman association. Let my people go this republican won despite a legendary temper and this gop congressman won reelection despite facing felony charges. What now for the Obama Administration and how will the Congress Govern . Just because we have a two party system doesnt mean we have to be in perpetual conflict. All that and more now. Welcome into a special edition of power politics. Im david shuster. Im michael shure. What a night last night was. Nobody could have predicted what happened. Washington is now looking ahead to the final two years of the Obama Administration after republicans gained majorities in the house and senate in last nights election. Republicans calling their victory a mandate against president obamas policies, the gop is painting to anxiety over the economic recovery as a major reason americans voted against democrats. The gop now has their biggest majority in the house since world war ii. The party gained control of the senate, picking up seven seats. Joining us from washington now is lisa stark. Lisa, good morning. Good morning. David, republicans certainly have a lot to celebrate with this morning. First they put together a very deliberate strategy to insure the republican candidates on the ballot for them in november appealed to a broader part of the electorate with you were helped by voter dissatisfaction, extreme dissatisfaction with president obama and also the do nothing congress. Riding the wave of voter discontent, the balance of washington shifted. It now favors republicans who will control both the house and the senate. Tonight, they said we can have real change in washington, real change. [ applause ] leading the republican rout tuesday, Mitch Mcconnell. He easily beat democratic Alison Grimes who stumbled late in the campaign. With seven pickups, republicans crossed to victories in west virginia, south dakota and montana. It was eye was not republican joni ernst coming from behind to win. Tom tillis win sealed the democrats fate. I think senator reid is going to have a Different Office assignment come february. Colorados incumbent mark udall losing. In arkansas. How about that win . Tom cotton denied mark pryor a third term in the senate. I think it was a win we all hoped for and maybe expected, but perhaps earlier and bigger than any of us would have expected. Democrats were able to stop the bleeding in several states, in new hampshire, incumbent Jeanne Shaheen put away former senator scott brown. In virginia, mark warner is locked in a dead heat with former r. N. C. Chairman who can demand a recount. In louisiana, no candidate received over 50 of the vote, triggering a runoff next month. Three term senator Mary Landrieu will face bill cassidy again accident six. We have the race we want and bill cassidy, you cannot run, you cannot hide anymore. This race is starting tonight the campaign in that state continues. President obama will hold a News Conference shortly before 3 00 p. M. Eastern time today and it will be very interesting to see what he has to say. He has invited leaders from both parties to the white house on friday to talk about moving forward. Michael, david. Lisa, you know, youve mentioned that the president s holding a press conference this afternoon. Hes holding it after majority leader elect Mitch Mcconnell leader will be holding his. What do you expect is going to happen in that 10 minute block after Mitch Mcconnell speaks and before the president speaks . Im sure the president will be watching that speech closely. He tried to reach out to Mitch Mcconnell, left a message for him. I dont know if they connected yet but the president was going to try again. As of an hour or so ago, the two had not talked directly. Both are making nice. Theyre going to say we he want to cooperate. Mcconnell said the voters want us to Work Together on issues with he agree on. The question is can that happen. There are so many factors against it, including years of distrust between the two parties, so well have to see the tone set by both men when they speak later this afternoon. Lisa, thank you very much. I got to believe, michael, that mcconnells going to be magnanimous, gracious in victory, perhaps a bit modest today. I imagine he will be. Thats not always his demeanor once he he steps into the well of the senate. He doesnt know these senators very well. Ten people made it to the senate that he is not terribly familiar with and hes not going to have an easy time within his caucus. The person trying to keep track of all of this in louisville is libby casey. She joins us with the latest. The News Conference this afternoon, what can we expect . You said it well, expect him to be gracious, positive, a little expect him to be forceful. He needs to claim turf at majority leader, because even though we expect him to take that post, the Senate Republicans have to decide that. Hes staking out his territory today. This has been such abinteresting race for many reasons, because Mitch Mcconnell was largely running against president obama but shows that hes the consummate washington politician, experienced, five terms in office so far. He didnt just fight or Alison Grimes, he also fought off a conservative Tea Party Challenger months ago in the republican primary and he did it fast in a way that was surprising to some who thought he might get more of a run from his money from matt bevin. Mcconnell was quickly able to control the mentalling and paint him as a fringe candidate, pro cock fighting, because he attended a cock fighting rally. He had mixed messages on taking federal bailout money, so was able to keep up with that relentless campaigning all throughout the past few months. To supporters last night, he had a clear message. It was about a government that people no longer trust to carry out its most basic duties, to keep them safe, to protect the border, to provide dignified and quality care for our veterans, a government that cant be trusted to do the basic things because its too busy focusing on things that shouldnt be focused on at all. Like a lot of voters across the country, people in kentucky have told me that theyre tired of business as usual in washington and they could have expressed that by voting against theyre senior senator. They decided to cast a vote that was essentially against president obama and Mitch Mcconnell was able to capitalize on that distrust of the white house here in kentucky. It was a margin wider than expected. You brought up trivia bringing up matt bevin. What about ashley judd, any talk of that . Not so much at this point, you know, as i talked to people at the polls yesterday, there was some respect for Alison Grimes in the fact that she brought a lot of energy into the race and even senator mcconnell said last night that she should be commended for taking on this challenge. When you look at the how the polls went, voters weighed in, Alison Grimes, any democratic running for the seat would have needed women, young urban vote. She just didnt get it. Men went for mcconnell. The margins are wide there, but women went for Mitch Mcconnell. Older voters voted for mcconnell. As you go younger, the margin closes but just not enough. Even young voters are pretty split. Alison grimes is pledge to go keep up her message and may be a rising star in the Democratic Party. Libby casey, thank you very much. Michael, when you look at those numbers, 15point spread between mcconnell and grimes larger than his last senate race. Maybe they should have run ashley judd just for the heck of it. Libbys point is well taken, the uphill climb that any democratic would have had in the state even with women voters, it just seemed insurmountable. There are still a handful of senate races too close to call this morning. In virginia, democratic senator mark warner is clinging to a small lead of ed gillespie. Republican challenger dan sullivan is still leading incumbent senator. In louisiana, the senate race heading to a december runoff, neither able to secure more than 50 of the vote he. Randall, how with him the next month leading up to the runoff look different from louisianas campaign . In the run up to yesterdays election, incumbent senator Mary Landrieu ran a mostly traditional campaign, issuesbased, touting her reward. Expect that to change. Shell talk issues with a likely more pointed edge. She challenged her republican opponent last night, bill cassidy, to talk issues, not president obama. We have the race that with he want and bill cassidy, you cannot run, you cannot hide anymore. This race is starting tonight that reference to him not hiding has to do with the fact that cassidy avoided debates. Shes challenged him to six debates to talk about issues. Cassidy, of course, used the republican playbook that worked all over the country, tying landrieu to president obama, and from what he was saying last night, we dont expect him to change the script. If you want a senator that represents you, not barack obama, i look forward to getting your vote on december 5. You hashed him say represent you, not barack obama, look for more of those ads running down here in new orleans as the runoff Campaign Heats up. My only question is why did you move away from kathy dumont in that live shot . Maybe we lost randall. Maybe he doesnt want to respond. Maybe hes upset about it. One of the stars from the senate race last night, joni ernst broke through in the republican primary with this amazing ad where she talked about growing up kass straighting hogs and made a reference to that commercial in her victory speech last night. Watch. Thanks to all of you. We are heading to washington and we are going to make em squeal theyre going to make em squeal. Theres so many different ways you can go with that. Was she going to washington to keep kass straighting . I dont know, but cutting pork is what it was all about and that was the symbolism for her and that appears to be exactly what she wants to do. Maybe shell make some of the republicans squeal the way they did for sarah palin once upon a time. In washington, republicans picked up at least three governorships. Pat quinn in illinois has yet to concede. This is a race thats got to sting democrats, Bruce Reasoner spent 100,000 to join a wine club and pat quinn still couldnt win. This is a place president obama went in, its his adopted home state where he served as a senator and he couldnt put pat quinn over. They thought one place the president could work. Maryland is a state where democrats outnumber republicans 21. What happened in maryland. That is the number one surprise of the night. It appeared that omalley being limited out was going to creed cede to a democratic. I think far coakley is done, scott brown likely done. Scott brown at this point could maybe stand against david cameron. In england, he could move to another country and try to run. Martha coakley has been an unsuccessful candidate twice. I dont see her running again. Democrats picked up Gubernatorial Office in pennsylvania last night because the incumbent was tied to a sex abuse scandal. They won in rhode island, california, jerry brown has got a fourth term. Jerry brown, he capped off his acceptance last night by saying now i got to wake up tomorrow and figure out what the heck you do with a fourth term. California is a very pretty goodive state. It elects democrats statewide. The republicans have not been since pete wilson able to get into the break the mold of democrats, the hold that they have. Lets run the sound bite of jerry brown. Ive already reviewed some of the more significant events of my second term and im committed to avoiding all those mistakes. I am not going to reveal them tonight. There he is, saying that look, i made mistakes but im not going to review them. Easy funny and very glib. Jerry brown is an institution, a dynasty there, pat brown was governor. Its a name people in california are familiar with. You put anything to democratic in california, its going to do well. This is the Gubernatorial Race, the nastiest Gubernatorial Race this year. Scott pulled it out. What does that mean. It means a couple of things. Its really good for jeb bush who helped with the organization and his endorsement of rick scott in that race going down the stretch, really important to rick scott. I think it marginalizes marco he rubio in that state should jeb bush try to run, makes the path for marco rubio a little more difficult. Jimmy carters grandson lost the gubernatorial challenge in georgia to incumbent republican nathan beal. It was tough sledding in georgia. The polling was abhorrent. We see now, look at how much the senate race was decided by 15 points, carter lost by fewer, but still, a very tight race but thats only for georgia. Democrats have not made headway there. The one that stings for the democrats was in wisconsin where scott walker, the incumbent governor won his third election in the last four years, surviving a recall and then doing pretty well last night in terms of democratic challenge from a candidate that president obama had campaigned for. Hes now running for 2161 would presume. One would guess that. I think scott walker, 52 , mary burke 47 . Scott walker a great politician. He has been able in three times stood for election three times, really in four years, an excellent politician. I think john kasich in ohio is watching this race, david, saying i dont really care if scat walker wins because i want that, walk a little bit of a path to the nomination in 2016. It was a bad night for teachers unions. You look at wisconsin, you look at michigan, you look at illinois. You look even at rhode island where a democratic won, but they all ran against the teachers unions. Things are still up in the air in the great state of alaska. One reason was the election there, they were run differently from the rest of the country. There was an interesting senate race up there. Alan is in seattle. You spent time in alaska recently. How come the results came i camo slowly . Pretty simple, geography and logistics. There are a lot of People Living and working in alaska who are a long, long way from what you or i would call a city or what you and i would call a road system. The state of alaska will accept ballots, mailin ballots as long as theyre postmarked on election day for up to 10 days after that. When the democratic incumbent won his senate seat six years ago, he was losing by 1. 5 points on election night, ended up two weeks later being declared the winner by slightly more than that. Were seeing that again play out in alaska. I talked to the camp last night and they were figuring that there would be 30,000 extra votes still to cast after the numbers came down. From what were seeing this morning, were looking at about 2,000 votes separating these two men, dan sullivan, the republican challenger and mark the democratic incumbent. He says everybody alaskas vote deserves to be counted. We might not know for days to come. Alan, our man in the last frontier, and alaska proving to be just that. Senator Mitch Mcconnell is expected to speak today and president obama will talk publicly for the first time about the results. Join us for coverage right here on aljazeera. Power politics will continue after this. Only on al jazeera america. On the next talk to al jazeera, legendary tv host dick cavett. Steve jobs said, how does it feel to be dick cavett . About the only question thats ever floored me, you know . Talk to al jazeera. Saturday. 5 00 eastern. Only on al jazeera america. Welcome back to power politics. There is an International Impact to the Election Results last night as they were seen across the globe as a setback to president obama. Dana lewis is covering events from london. What is the view there about what happened here last night . A lot of people saw it coming, so there isnt tremendous surprise. They see that the sun is slowly setting on president obamas presidency and they have some pretty low expectation in terms of where were headed. Today many of the commentators have suggested that certainly his presidency, the oval office will come under more pressure from the republicans to take harder lines when it comes to syria, iraq, russia and ukraine. The question is how do other people view it from afar like president putin, does he now see a weakened president obama and the chance to take advantage of that situation and some people would say that that would be a miscalculation on his part, that in the end, there is not that much difference between the democrats and republicans on issues like territorial integrity of ukraine, so anybody sort of not holding the historic line and remembering that in the end, the main Foreign Policy decisions come from the oval office. They come from the president and not much that happened overnight to change that. Thank you very much. We now have joining us congressman steve cohen from tennessee. You won with 75 of the vote in tennessee, and to say that you were a bright spot for democrats last night maybe an understatement. Whats happened . Well, i think the electorate is very upset with the dysfunction in washington, but unfortunately they aimed their fire at the wrong target. The culprit of the dysfunction has been that do nothing congress, which is the republican congress, which shut down the government, and is not in touch with america that wants a raised minimum wage, wants more liberal marijuana laws, wants more personal rights and wants our country to succeed with infrastructure and jobs for the middle class, and protections for seniors on medicaid and social security. They elected cory gardner. I served with him for four years. I didnt recognize the man who was on t. V. Talking about sunshine and a new day and new morning in america. Easy not the same guy who served in the house. He was a nothing. Congressman, how do you approach dealing with democrats or not . If you were advising the white house this morning, what would you say . Well, the president s got two years. I think hes got a lot of opportunities still. Ive counseled the president or asked the president , advised the president , requested the president to issue lots of commutations. Liberty and justice and freedom is the post important thing in my mind and there are a lot of people in our prisons that dont deserve to be there and shouldnt be there and are casting taxpayers a lot of money and should be free he. He can do commutations. I dont know if theres a middle ground in immigration, there may be. I suspect the key stone pipeline will go through in some type of a grand bargain, maybe on corporate taxes. Hes got opportunities to work. In many areas, he and the republicans have much in common with job creation, its just how you do it. There are social programs where the republicans arent interested in peoples freedoms and opportunities to have a new life and a second chance, the president needs to be the person that uses the executive action that hes given, Sole Authority to use and issue commutations and do it soon. The democrats have to check out of their Heartbreak Hotel now. What is in fact the first thing they need to do when they get back to washington . Hopefully we can get something done in the lame duck. I dont know if we will, because Speaker Boehner who has been the problem, the Republican House has been the problem probably wont allow us to vote on much. Weve got some votes, we should have passed a gas tax increase to fund the road program and thats what gets good to guess market and creates jobs. We should have done it in the last session, we should do it in the lame duck. We need to get together in the senate, we need to get as many confirmations of judicial appointments and other points through as possible before they get blogged down. We have to Work Together. There will be areas we can Work Together and one area is going to be in issues of Foreign Policy. Weve got to leave it there. Were about to lose you and were going to run out of time. Congratulations last need and thanks for joining us. We want to get to former senior aide to harry reid. What would you advise harry reid this morning . I would advise him that first off Mitch Mcconnell woke up with the worst job in washington, d. C. This morning. Has he to balance two wings of his party, illinois and seven other members of the senate just like mark kirk. On the other side, ted cruz who doesnt care about mark kirk winning election who only carse about his president ial as operatings. Mitch mcconnell has to tow the road. If i were harry reid, i would say throw as many about how olders on the road as possible. Same thing for the white house, throw boulders on the road for Mitch Mcconnell. The white house has the opportunity to get things done. They should issue as many executive orders as possible. I have a feeling one will come down on immigration and well see what they do. Thank you very much. On behalf of michael shure, im david shuster, thanks for watching. Watching. U. S. Air strikes . I think this is really interesting. Hello, welcome to a special consider this. Blood baath, disaster, drubbing, those are the nicer terms to describe what happened to the Democratic Party yesterday in mid term elections. Coming up, well be joined by a man who served for a decade in the house and two big winners to tell us whats ahead. Lets start with the big night for republicans as they exceeded expectations, picking up 12 house seats and increasing their control of statehouses, winning governors races in states where nobody expected them to win. Joining us here in new york is former senator brad miller, he represented the 13t 13th Congressional District of North Carolina in congress between 2003 and 2013. Joining us from tallahassee, florida is rick wilson, a prettyical strategist and media consultant. It is good to have you both on the show. Congressman, is there any doubt that this is a very clear message to the white house and to the Democratic Party . It was a bad night for democrats, theres no doubt about it. I think theres a narrow explanation that it was a base election that was largely fought out in an election that had gone very well for democrats, so theres a lot of Democratic Senators who won in 2008 that would not win in ordinary circumstances. We saw a lot of governors seats, too. It was a bad economy. Theres a saying in sports, always change a losing game, never change a winning game. Just nobody understands how the economy works anyway, thats how voters vote on economics and they thought the economy right now is a losing game. That lets democrats off too easy. I think weve got two parties that have become identity based parties, which is very trouble for democracy. Neither party has a coalition that can governor. In that context, the republicans have really been seen as a donothing party and as part of a donothing congress. Now theyll have control of both houses on capitol hill, so a big responsibility comes with that, are republicans ready to govern and compromise . The house has passed more legislation in the last few years than people give them credit for. The real road block has been harry reid, the worst obstructionist minority leader harry reid, because this is now a man, he exercised the power and prerogatives of his office to block any legislation that came out of the house. It was always his way or the highway and now we are going to see folks in the house and Senate Address issues that this white house and harry reid as their ally to be fair and are willing to face. House republicans of said no to most things that came out of the white house. Yes, because most things that come out of the white house are economic catastrophes waiting to happen. The one thing, the one signature accomplishment the white house passed in the last seven years obamacare destroyed their political chance and is well on the way as all the stuff pushed back into november of this year starts to hit american consumers. Youve got an opportunity for republicans to do things like key stone and reforming the tax system and addressing a lot of the systematic abuse of power whether its the i. R. S. Or e. P. A. Or other agencies under barack obama. Youre going to see a lot coming out of this congress. A lot of its going to go to Barack Obamas desk and whether anythings going to get done. The white house is saying that they dont see this as a ejection of the president or the white house policies. What world could they be living in . I think they should pause and look hard at the economic policies and how well they work for most americans. I understand polling showed yesterday 63 of voters thought the economy was rigged against working people. That should be an electorate that democrats win overwhelmingly. And minimum wage measures pass states, including red states and blue states. Thats one issue of which we addressed economic the economic concerns of americans, but its not enough and most americans are not working for the minimum wage. That really helps the bottom 20 or so, but the people making 40,000, 50,000, 60,000 a year sort of think nobodys doing anything thats going to help them. Its true the house has passed a lot of stuff. Most of it were various repeels in the Affordable Care act. There really has been no compromise. They passed things and theres been no willingness to compromise at all. Talking about compromise, republicans have said maybe the white house will work with us, the white house maybe the republicans will work to us, going right back to where we normally are. The rhetoric from people like ted cruz is already heated. Im going to quote barack obama back to the white house when he sat with paul ryan, john boehner and the Republican Leadership right after he won in 2009. He basically said i won. That was his my way or the highway moment. That was when he believed that an electoral decision validated his policies and his beliefs. Last night, republicans swept the board. We have the largest majorities that we have ever had in the house of representatives in the last 100 years. We had a sweeping, crushing defeat of the democratic agenda in the u. S. Senate. The democrats, the 27 democrats who voted for the Affordable Care act are no longer in the u. S. Senate since 2010. These are people who have been absolutely did he have stated by this and they recognize now in the white house that theyre in a corner. Theres a republican majority in the senate, a large republican majority in the house. Theyve got to face political reality. Theyre famous for not facing political reality, but if they dont, Barack Obamas last two years are going to are a very unhappy time for him. We only have a minute left and i want to get a reaction from both of you about the races in your states. North carolina, it was expected kay hagan was ahead, tight, but tom tim listen took the seat for the republicans. What happened . She had a very slight lead, a lot of the polls showed it even a poll in the last couple days showed her with a very slight lead and assume that go 21 of the turnout would be africanamerican which i thought was largely optimistic. It was an election to an electorate fairly concerned about the economy and is very frustrated. The same situation in florida and the governors race, Charlie Crist now a democratic was slightly ahead in the polls, but rick scott, incumbent governor won the race. Why . Rick scotts people put together a better Field Operation at the end of the day and Charlie Crist could not recreate the Obama Coalition of young voters, asp americans, hispanic voters to come out for him because those things depended on the celebrity of barack obama. He campaigned with the clintons, with every other democratic surrogate he could get his hands on and nothing else quite captured the magic of it. Charlie crist is a Party Switcher and a sociopath and people recognized it and thats the end of the game for charlie. Im not sure people recognize that, rick, but thank you for joining us. Thank you very much. Coming up, we will be joined by wisconsin congressman mark and california canning man. We will be joined by two washington insiders for a look at the trends in the exit polls. Polls. Welcome back to a special ed disof consider this, America Votes 2014. Were looking at last nights big win for the republicans and what that means for the president , his party and all americans. Joining us now is congressman mark poken. He won reelection yesterday in wisconsin second Congressional District, wisconsin covers parts of southern wisconsin and includes the capitol, madsen. Really a pleasure to have you with us. Congratulations on your big win. You are certainly an exception to the rule. You are now going to be a democratic in the house thats dominated by republicans in a way that has not been seen since the truman administration. The last congress did less than any other congress before it. Is it realistic to believe we are going to see change . I would hope so. The excuse thats been for at least the last two years has been that somehow the Senate Democrats werent going to work with the house republicans, which many of us knew was an excuse. Now they have no excuse. We can see their real agenda, where are they on health care, on helping the middle class and they no longer can point a finger at anyone. Its time to put up or, you know, they have to show where they are going. You are part of a group in Congress Called the problem solvers, bipartisan group. Do you think youll be able to reach control promisees . The real question the last two years was the tea party holding up everyone else. The republicans are going to ever to face that. The leadership have the Republican Party and house are going to ever their hands full, ted cruz in the is that the, a number of folks in the house who dont fundamentally believe in government and stopped much of the activity that should have happened in the last two years and thats not going to change. The real challenge is are they going to stand up to some of their own members so we can put an agenda forward, so we can restore the highway trust fund, so we can make sure we get through this budget impasse and debt ceiling and all the real challenges we have as a country, we have heavy things to lift together. That takes democrats and republicans. If they continue to let that tea party division, the tail wag the dog, even though theyre in control of everything. I think the people of america are going to look at them and really want a whole lot more. Clearly, that didnt seem to hurt them in this election. Why did things go so badly for the democratics . This is the mid term elections. Generally we lose 29 seats in the house and were not even at half of that. You lost more seats in the senate than an average mid term year. Right, but also if you look at turnout across the country, one of my colleagues in california, i looked at the total number of votes cast by democrats and republicans and its way less than my republican opponent who got 32 of the vote. They had 25 of the turnout in wisconsin. People in the mid term always when the president s in power in one party, it hurts us in the mid term elections. It held back the bleeding at least on the house side. Were going to do what we can to work with republicans to get something done. Congress has really been broken the last four years. Youre in wisconsin, scott walker has been a built of a lightning rod especially with strong anti Union Positions pose hes taken. Democrats thought they could boot him out but instead he won pretty comfortably. What happened . Thats what happens. 2010, we elected scott walker and ron johnson to the u. S. Senate. In 2012, we elected tammy bam to the senate and reelected the president. Now we reelect governor walker, so we have a tendency to go back and forth between election cycles and were a very purple state for those reasons. I look at this as a challenge for the governor to realize that we are a state that has democrats and republicans. You cant just govern in one party and hopefully now this gives him a reason to reach out and find issues that the public agrees with us. The public agrees on funding our public schools. This is an opportunity now to try to get past some of those divides that weve had in the state and instead get something done. We hope things will get done in your state and across the country. Really a pleasure to have you with us. Thank you. Thank you. Turning for more on what the mid terms will mean for conducting the business of the nation in the nations capitol, were joined by the chief editor of roll calendar and the the conventional wisdom going into the election was that this would be a mixed election with republicans taking control of the senate but losing governor seats. Instead, republicans added governor seats including some of the bluest states in the country, massachusetts, illinois, married. Any question this was a wave for republicans . Not at all. Weve been coining the term the shellacking, a second coat. This really solidifies holds on state legislature, which is going to affect a lot of regular voters in regular states, not to mention what happens in congress. The public are tired of the gridlock and nothing getting done. The republicans said we have to find compromise, we recognize that the American People want something different. How long that lasts, i dont know but at least their making the overtures today that that is something they want to work towards. Saying it was a bad group of democrats when it came to the senate, the worst since eisenhower, but that wasnt the case for governors and we saw republicans add governor seats. You agree with christina . Absolutely. I think the governorship results that went against what the president was saying on that radio interview, seemed like he was trying to lay the groundwork for excuse or writing off as sort of a fluke, as sort of if they did lose the senate by a lot, which they have. It will be interesting to see the president come out in the east room, answer questions and talk about have to take questions about the loss and well see what message he puts out there. Theres been reporting that this white house does not believe they need a big shakeup, that they put out policies that the American People agree with. These results seem to go against that. His popularity is very low. Well see how much expectation the president that in his remarks and Going Forward. Republicans are sort of making overtures and saying we need to communicate. The president tried to call Mitch Mcconnell. I dont think they have spoken yet. The president is talking about executive action on immigration, maybe Going Forward with an attorney general nomination that could immediately poison the well once again as much as we hope there is some sense of bipartisanship going next year. As the white house is aggressive abthat could set another bad tone for congress. I will add that the scope of this massive republican win, in the house, theyre going to have the most wide majority theyve had since 1949 for the republicans, and that is actually takes i think some of the blame off of the president in a way, because youve got everybody lost, even the ones were looking that they might have been trending toward the democrats in the very end. How does that take blame away from the president . Well, because it was a massive wave, so there was nothing anybody could have done. What called the wave is the question, though. The general takeaway is his popularity is what the republicans ran largely against. And democrats tended to localize these races while republicans nationalized them and that was a successful strategy. Was there a bit of a mixed message . Even though republicans won all these elections, if you look at. On the ballots, things like the minimum wage, marijuana, restrictions on abortion rights, almost in every one of those cases, it went for the position, the liberal position in the vote. Its not news that theres two sort of different prevailing philosophies in many states in that you have red states and blue states by what the president campaigned on ages ago. For the white house, they believed all along and still believe that their policies and positions on a lot of the issues, pay for women and minimum wage are on the right side of the general public ledger, but that somehow, because they werent able to get these policies moving, whether its republican opposition, whether its the president s mismanagement of issues, World Affairs that got in the way, these things that did not get done, the public reacted negatively to washington as a whole. The president clearly as the chief executive took a lot more of the blame and thats where we are now. David brings up women. The numbers, you know, the democrats were really focused on the war on women, really pushing for the gender gap to continue to expand, instead it contracted. Back in 2012, it was 55 for the democrats, now that dropped to 52 . Well, this is a product of what a mid term electorate looks like. I fully expect the war on women to stay alive, particularly as you might see actions in some of these state legislature. If had gone i Hillary Clinton ie democratic ticket, these issues are not going to go away. The National Electorate need to get unmarried women to come out to the polls and vote for them and thats one way to motivate them. The democrats still saying that they think the mid class is their top election issue, but the war on women is a dominant theme. Very big themes came out when it came to the split of the electorate after 2012, that minorities were going democratic. That doesnt seem to be the case nearly at much. There was a significant drop in latinos voting for the democrats this time around, and also asians pretty much split down the middle. That demographic conventional wisdom is thrown out . The growing latino vote that really backed president obama in 2012 and looked like they were totally breaking democratic, i think theres frustration on immigration. Some of the states didnt have as many minorities. Congressman in chicago at a press conference is saying the president took a gamble to delay immigration to try to save the senate and it totally did not work. What does that leave you, he lost the Senate Anyway and now about to lose hispanic support. The democrats in the white house believe they can regain that. Well see whether the president is going to take aggressive action and some folks believe in light of this wave, its going to be hard for the president to stand up and say water going to stand up and take all this action on executive action. Ive got to leave it there. Were out of time. Its really great to have you both with us, really a pleasure to see you. Well talk to colorado congresswoman judy chu about last nights Election Results. Welcome back to a special edition of consider this. Were taking a look at the mid term elections and what they mean for the issues that matter most to americans. Joining us is congresswoman that judy chu, and won yesterday with 58 of the vote. Her district is located in the suburbs of los angeles. Congressman, very good to see you. Congratulations on your win. One thing i want to bring up to start off here is you are among the few relatively few democrats in this country who actually campaigned with president obama and won. How do you see this election and the message thats being sent to the president and white house . I think people voted based on what their quality of life is, even though unemployments going down and the g. D. P. Up, people arent seeing it in their daily lives and theyre frustrated. They voted to increase the minimum wage in five states and yet in those very same states, they voted for a change from democratic to republican. Immigration, we were just talking about it, its an issue thats important to you and to the voters in your district. You campaigned on it. Do you expect the president to take sweeping action by executive order . Well, i tell that you asians and hispanics will be very, very disappointed if that is the case because immigration is very, very important, so we have so many people that are waiting in the shadows and also family members have been waiting for decades to reunite with their families. Its really important for the president to fulfill his promise. If he does so without congress behind him, without comprehensive immigration reformal, will this further poison the well of a relationship to be nice about it is dysfunctional . It is important to do what we can to fix our broken immigration system. In fact, the fact that its broken has actually caused problems in our economy with agriculture, with High Tech Companies unable to find employees, so we need to do this. If he does move after what happened in yesterdays election, if he moves unilaterally do you not think it could create even more problems, if we are talking about trying to govern, trying to see compromise, getting something done in washington, will that be an issue with your republican colleagues . There are many things that people on both sides of the aisle are asking for on immigration reformal. Hopefully, he can target those things that will provide the greatest relief for everybody, every average person as well as for businesses that are crying for a change. With this even larger republican majority in congress and with republicans in control of the senate, youre job just got harder. Weve seen this terrible gridlock in washington and people are upset about it. Its one issue that people keep reting in any poll, they see that as a major issue. Do you have any hope that you guys will be able to compromise and move this country forward in the ways that need to be done . Well, i truly hope that the republicans are ready to govern. Certainly the democrats willing to work on issues that will provide for more jobs that will raise the minimum wage, that will make sure that there is fair pay for women and equal pay. These are bottom line every day quality of life issues. Its important for us to come together and address them. We only have 30 seconds left. What are you hearing from your republican colleagues . Do you think that you are going to be able to Work Together as you just said . Well we have some very important Critical Issues left in this lame duck session, including keeping government open. We really need to come together and make sure that we move this country forward. Congresswoman judy chu, thank you for your time. It will be an interesting time in the days and months to come.
