Some antisocial personality. The traits lead most people to derail. Time. Announced. It represents a shift in the viewing habits. Netflix is getting into the game here. What did you do . We begin with a growing death toll in gaza, more than 90 have been killed and hundreds injured in a dramatic escalation of air strikes targetting hamas. Israel continues to be hit by longrange rockets from gaza, most stopped by the iron dome interceptor preventing deaths. That caused president obama to call on Binyamin Netanyahu to condemn the rocket fire to israel. Binyamin netanyahu said a truce was not on the agenda, accusing hamas of targetting israelis and deliberately putting Palestinian Civilians into harms way. Hamas is thus economying a double war committing a double war crime. Targetting israeli civilians and hiding behind Palestinian Civilians. Israel was urged to show restraint and stop firing, urging that it could spiral out of control. The risk of violence is real. Gaza and the region as a whole cannot afford any fullblown war. Joining us from tel aviv is novak, an advisor to the Security Council and an ambaz door of the state of israel. Good for you to join us. Theres a lot of fear on both sides as you know, as the violence escalates. The death toll from the israeli air offensive jumped dramatically. Palestinians say theres more than 80 dead, including children, hundreds injured. Binyamin netanyahu told israel on thursday that a ceasefire is not on the agenda. Why not . I believe that just as the Israeli Government did not initiate this round of violence, it is not up to the Israeli Government to end the violence. I think the position was, and still is, once theres no firing on the palestinian side from either. The Prime Minister signalled the possibility of a ground offensive against gaza. As you know, they have not gone well in the past few years and its not a popular choice among israelis, especially if it starts, and israeli troops are killed. Do you think a ground offensive is likely to happen. I think when we use the term ground offensive we may refer to different things. It is in the all just one option of conquering or taking offer the gaza strip and staying there for a long time. There are more limited options. This particular Prime Minister whom i did not vote for exhibited throughout his tenure a sober approach to the use of military force, very careful, very reserved. I dont think hell go for an allout offense ion gaza, but there may be a need for a limited operation with limited scope and objectives, as well as limited duration. Hamas has plunged in popularity or had plunged in popularity before this. It was bankrupt in many ways, weaker than it has ever been. Is this fight a gift to hamas, that people will rally around hamas as a result of what is going on . I down it very much. I think that the degree of suffering on the gaza strip amongst civilians has been quite unbearable before the operation, and becomes more so during. I think civilian suffering whether there are civilian casualties, god forbid, or if not, children are terrified, adults are scared, people are without jobs. The gaza situation was miserable before the operation, and became worse as a result of it. I dont think that they will thank hamas for making the situation worse. I dont think hamas did it just for prestige and local popularity either. Talking about civilian fear, lets talk about what happens on the israeli side. In a special meeting on wednesday, the israeli ambassador talked about how difficult life is in israel now. Lets listen to that. In the last three days, 442 rockets have been fired into israel. Thats one every 10 minutes. 15 seconds. Thats how much time you have to run for your life. Powerful words. You are in teleav. Now. Its routine, which is almost surreal to say because the night before last, me, my son and grandson were watching the semifinal of the world cup of the soccer game. In the middle we had to go into the shelter because of the first siren since the second gulf war in 1991. You have that reality in the back of your find. People are more alert that normal, but we go to work, we go to restaurants, and im sitting in your studio. Life it is amazing awe quickly people get used to the most bizarre situation. Its scary to think you can get used to Something Like that. With these sophisticated hamas rockets reaching into israel, your iron dome Defense System has been tremendous at protecting israelis, how fearful are you that it wont be impreg enable and a rocket could hit tel aviv or jerusalem . The hamas rockets are not getting more sophisticated, they are getting longer range. They are still primitive rockets. Iron dome can deal with this and more sophisticated items. Iron dome ii is not 100 full prove. Its better than 90 , which is amazing, really a Technological Development of amazing proportions, but it is not foolproof. As a matter of fact minutes ago there was one rocket penetrated and was not hit by was not intercepted by iron dome, hit a car and we have a seriously wounded civilian. We had that before, in previous round too. Occasionally one rocket sneaks through the system. And civilians are at risk. Its quite impressive how disciplined israeli are in terms of adhering to the regulations that wums you hear the siren once you hear the siren you move shelter. Its difficult to imagine what its like to live there and in gaza. Nim rod novak, a pleasure to have you on the show. For more on the israelipalestinian conflict i spoke with Jonathan Prince who served as a senior advisor, and was the deputy secretary assistant of state and a member of George Mitchells middle east delegation. We spoke before president obama called Binyamin Netanyahu. So much anger on both sides, it escalated so quickly since the killing of the israeli teenagers and the palestinian teenagers, do you see a chance of a quick fire truce here. Theres a lot of factors going on. The anger is high on both sides. The normal levers of influence that we bring to bear is decreased. At a moment the israelis have been subjected to a horrible crime. Emotions are cry. The palestinians are reconciling two dispirit political factions, their ability to move political leverage is low. The normal areas in which we try to engage the parties, security for the israelis, are not as available as they usually are. And you have anger on the palestinian side. Yes, and youre in tel aviv, you hear the sirens going off. A peace conference. They had to evacuate. Now. What about the u. S. Role. Reports are that its a thursday afternoon, president obama had not spoken to Binyamin Netanyahu suns the crisis be since the crisis began. Merkel and others have spoken to Binyamin Netanyahu, expressing support for his rail. Is the president Obama Administration failing in not engage engaging. I dont think thats fair. The contest between the government is deep and widespread. Administrations. Secretary of state john kerry has spoken to the israelis. Military to military, diplomat to diplomat. N. A. S. A. Security council and the equivalence are talking and ambass doors. The governments a connected. Its important to understand that this administration has provided more direct military support to the israelis than any previous administration. What about the erratic messaging from the United States. President obama wrote an op ed piece where he praised Palestinian Authority leader mahmoud abbas, but didnt mention Binyamin Netanyahu. We have phillip gordon, a senior military official in charge of coordinating middle east policy pretty much blasting israel in a speech in tel aviv. Ism i saw. Asaw some reports on gordons speech and he didnt say anything we havent said. We know it to be true, the israeli knows its to be true. If israel want to maintain a jewish and democratic character it needs to find a way to stop governing palestinian arabs. What phil gordon said is something we know to be try, the 2state solution is the only way to achieve israels aspirations for security and democracy, and the palestinians aspirations. You wrote in buzz feed, suggestions of what the administration should do, saying youre calling for colin powell for a bigger and more together. Here is the thing. We know, and to his credit secretary of state john kerry understands this. James cary said im down with call. We are the only external influencer over there. Theres a great myth over there on every side. Ive sat through music through Binyamin Netanyahu and advisors, and make them do it. We cant make them do it. We have huge influence. As the only exerciser, when we pulled bark, it looks pulled back, it looks to the leadership and the people that we dont think theres a possibility for a good outcome. If we pull back and indicate that, that inflames tensions. Theres a point to engagement for engagement stake. You thing it may escalate. The secretary made an alloutest, superintendent a lot of time, didnt produce results. We are seeing what is happening in iraq, theres tensions in egypt, syria is a mess. The middle east is a powder keg. How dangerous is the situation region . The situation as we said, the whole region is a bit of a powder keg. The dangerous situations in each of the areas has ramifications in other areas. Political leaders are sensitive to what they see elsewhere and react accordingly. Moderate arab leaders are aware that theres simmering sectarian violence, outright war, the arab is worked out. Hamas has been in a bad position. They are forced into reckon sill yags. Hamas is nothing, if not cynical, and they are aware engaging in a Missile Exchange with the israelis helps them. We discussed that with nim ron novak. The Obama Administration, how much can an American Administration do, not only internationally, but domestically. We have the crisis on the boarder, so much going on. Exerted. Despite what the parties want to see, that we can tell the israelis what to do, you cant lead horses to water or parties to peace. What we can do the same thing in syria and iraq. Exactly. At the end of the day these are political issues. You heard this first from president obama when he campaigned. The resolution has to come from its leadership and people. The ultimate rhys lugs has to resolution has to come from their leadership. We cant force them. We can persuade, argue, give them the security resource, the state and Economic Resources to help them build the institutions to get to a place they can afford. We cant make them do it. Pleasure to have you with us Jonathan Prince. Now for more stories from around the world. We begin in berlin where the German Government is expelling the c. I. A. Station chief at the u. S. Embassy in retaliation for two espionage scandals within a week. A spy for the u. S. In the German Defence department was unmasked wednesday, and last week a member of jeremys Intelligence Service was arrested for passing documents. He confessed. The German Defence minister expressed anger but hopes for a reconciliation. Translation we do not tolerate this approach. But there is also a chance now, especially for the american side, to wipe the slate clean. Next to china hacksers broke into the Security System of the United States Personnel Management system according to the new york times. The target was information on tens of thousands of Government Employees applying for topsecret clearance. St officials believes no personal information was compromised, the cyber attack was traced back to china, but them. And john boehner is making good on his threat to file a lawsuit against president obama for exceeding his powers. He released legislation allowing congress to sue the president for changing the Affordable Care act without congressional approval, objecting to the president s decision it delay penaltyius on employees who do in the offer Health Insurance to employees. The speaker argues the president has the power to make his laws and boasting about it. That is what he did. The resolution will be brought to the house four. That is some of what is happening around the world. Doing nothing is not an option. The white house makesize case to the senate op willons. Do nasty people fair better in the work place. Harmeli aregawi is tracking the top stories on the web. What is trending. Washington state pot enthusiasts set tout to make history, and learnt that sometimes it comes with a price. While you are watching let us know what you think now, to the border crisis where on thursday the Senate Appropriations Committee Held a hearing to discuss president obamas 3. 7 billion spending request. Homeland security secretary jay johnson told the committee that time was running out and that doing nothing was not an option. Given the added transportation cost, enforcement cost, customs and Border Patrol will run out of money in midseptember at the current burn rate. Republicans were skeptical, a senator saying the request was an incomplete plan. The Top Republican said the founding request would not fix the problem. I personally have no confidence that pouring billions into the current immigration system will solve the crisis. Joining us from washington dc is the editorinchief of role call, christina. Lets start with the senate hearing. The administration argued that they need the money as soon as possible because if its not approved immigration agencies will run out of money. What are people saying on the hill, despite the republican skepticism, can they afford to say no . Thats a good question. The president says no, they cant. They are calling for action. Proposed action, all you need to do is pass it. With the divided government its a difficult issue, bringing up political fights ahead of the midterm elections, its an issue that involves children that frustrates people as an issue, boiling to the surface where you see intention pictures from the border and the fact that there has been so many people going down to the border with texas. Its a difficult issue for congress to be faced with. They dont want to put a rubberstamp on it. Congress lyings to tinker likes to tinker with anything the administration proposes, congress disposes. They are going to want to put their own plan in, and emergency supplementals tend to pass, it will have other things in it, and provisions that curb how the money can be spent. Its a difficult issue emotionally and politically and financially. The dollars involved are huge. 3. 7 billion, thats the seize of montana. Do you think it will be amount . Its hard to know. One thing you can say its not as if we havent been throwing money at the problem, thats what a lot of reform advocates talk about, its not a system where they are not proposing to fund the border or add agents or punned processes to deport the children. This is adding to what we do. We spend billions already there, and thats a reason why reforming the system and bringing sanity into it could help it. People argue if you had a pathway to legalization, it would bring in a certain amount of tax dollars and smoothing of the process. Whether you are on either side, no one wants to spend this money, especially when it comes to an election. Its a reason the president puts in a sweetener, looking at a fire programme, ways to avert Disaster Relief and stepping up an emergency spending issue. Emergency supplemental theres something, whether its hurricane katrina, superstorm frequently. Lets look at the issue of the week, the president in texas for fundraising, there on thursday, didnt visit the border. Some members of his own party are saying he should have. One member of his party said it was like being on a trip to a lace where an ailing place where an ailing relative is in the hospital and not bothering to visit the relative. Is there concern among democrats on how this is playing out. They dont love it. When they want to point out a difference, it doesnt hurt them. A democrat you can mention is henry of texas, saying he saw pictures of president obama. Having beer, playing pool. Why arent you knoiping there. The president s response to that is this is the photo op. Texas is a giant state. Its not like being in the same town or hospital. Its a few hundred meals. They are raising money, its a voluntary exercise. He was on a massive fund razer. You cant argue with the fact that they are drumming up the issue to energy the basis ahead of the november 4th election. What about talk of reversing the 2008 law passing, signed by president obama, treating undocumented from Central American countries to those of mexico. Do you think that is going to get anywhere. It may have attraction. There has been great reporting. Theres for example because some democrats support this. The spanish caucus was unhappy about this. Its very much in support of looking and changing this to allow a trafficking law saying you could smoothly send people back to a border, extending to central america. Logisticly. Republican task force recommended that. It shows an or of compromise. The president made clear that thursday, wednesday, if you want to change the law, consider it, move it forward. Im open to ideas. Whether or not thats the product, well see. It is possible that this law signed by george w. Bush at the end of 2008 could get tinkering. And border security, do you think it will lead to movement. One thing i dont get about the calls for Border Patrol of the national guard, i dont know how that would fix the problem, once an undocumented kid steps foot there. Theres a lot of ways that it doesnt f the problem, and its not as if the borders are 100 porous, theres more and more money towards the border. Ive been covering immigration as an issue. In 2007 you have Bush Administration saying we funded the fence, finish building the fence, there are parts that are so died up in bureaucratic red tape. Nothing will get done. Throwing money at the border, adding drone security. Thats a proposal we heard so many times, adding in the national guard. That will not necessarily fix the problem. It has to do with the fact that america. A big border with mexico. Always a pleasure to have you. Thank you. Part of the border crisis getting scant attention was a suing for children to demand representation. Little kids can be pitted against prosecutors and representing themselves in front of immigration judges. Joining us from los angeles is a senior staff cornery with the aclus immigrant rights project, and the aclu foundation of south carolina. Good of you to join us. You are suing the federal government to fail to provide legal representation to immigrant children. Some are showing up in court on their own, representing themselves at the hearings. Absolutely. You have judges addressing children. In some casesate years old cases eight years old, six years old. Its a travesty of justice. On the other hand, many of the kids get representation from nonprofit groups that specialise in these cases. How big a problem is this. How many of these kids are not having legal representation. We dont have great numbers. At one point a study thought it was about half of children unrepresented in immigration court. That number has probably gone up since there are many fleeing central america. You were working on the lawsuit before the surge in immigrants happened. Thats right. We won a Court Decision last year saying the government had an obligation to provide legal representation to people with serious mental disorders, going through deportation proceedings, and we wrote a letter to the government saying, youve done this for that group of people, how about for children. They have made some steps in the right direction, increasing funding, but they fund prosecutors for every case involving a child recollects but only government attorneys for a. There are prrtion in every prosecutors in every case, but attorneys. Exactly. In half of the cases children go it alone against a trained prosecutor on the other side. Thats not due process, and its not fundamentally fair. The numbers involved, the dollars involved, if laurels are provided for all the immigrants, i under the process about due fairness. How do you balance that . I think we have to ask ourselves as a nation whether we are willing to the send children, many of whom are refugees. The United Nations has done an analysis of this, and the unhcr, and said 58 of the children in the study they have done have colourful claims to refugee application or other forms of relief. Its no question we have to spend money to do this. If we are spending the money to spay for the prosecutors, can we afford to represent the children or are we going to deport them, in many cases to death and sprags from their families. What do you think about the justice departments plans to expedite Court Proceedings for unaccompanied families. Because of the surge they say they are planning to expand Legal Assistance for those facing deportation, what impact proposals . We have concerns that divvying things up means cutting corners. Well have to watch the situation, we are concerned about it. That being said, theres no problem with running deportation cases at a faster rate if they are conduct in a fair way. If the government ensures legal representation, studies find providing council speeds up cases because lawyers dont need as much time for thing, the judges give children extra time and everything runs smoothly when you have a person who knows what they are doing. We dont necessarily have a problem with the idea of doing thing faster, but it has to be done in a fair way. Its incumbent if we do that to make sure the children have adequate legal representation. The surprising ruts raised questions about behaviour in the workplace. Seth led the research study, joining us via skype where hes an assistant professor of organization at behaviour. Your Research Found people who are not nice tend to have early success at their jobs. We are talking about people with personality traits referred to as the dark triad. Can awe describe it for us . The dark triodd is three traits. Nahso sis is the most wellknown, people that want to be the center of attention, and want status, control. They really want to be to elevate themselves by making others feel small. Second is machiavellianism a manipulate if personality. The last is psychopathy, antisocial personality, and its mostly characterised by not feeling guilt, shame, not having much in the way of empathy. Starting with the manipulator, what are their succeed . One way that manipulators succeed, they love getting one over on people, they enjoy manipulation and dont care if people think they are bad. They have that going tore them. They put themselves first. All three put themselves first. The manipulator is willing to use a wide range of influence tactics to do it. Pretty much everything. A lot of people have one or two. Ingrashiating or use flattery. Theyll use everything, moving threats, form political alliances, theyll try to get their bosss boss to work on their boss. That can work out for them, at least at first. It can. And it rears they have to be smart about it. You cant just try and manipulate people. If you do it in a way that is obvious, its pathetic. And it doesnt work and youll wind up outcast pretty quickly in your work place, if you are smart and do it well, in a way that people dont perceive quickly, it can help you get ahead. You are advancing your agenda, getting your goals accomplished. You talk about the bad things that narcissists bring to the table. Narcism can help people succeed, because they want so much to succeed that they manage to, you nope, operate in a way that shows a lot of energy. Yes. They are incredibly enthusiastic about their own ideas and projects. Anything that they care about directly, they can show tremendous enthusiasm for, and enthusiasm that others pick up on. Its how they make a first impression, and how in a oneoff sale they do a great job. The third is an antisocial personality. You hear that and think how all . A key thing about the antisocial personality, in a way they are called psychopaths, their key feature is they dont feel a lot of guilt or shame. They are impulse if, leaving them to take a lot of risks associated with stuff that they want. Since they take a lot of risks, sometimes they pay off. They take a risk and pay off. They look like they have a reputation for getting things done. So they are eventually probably going to run into problems. You say these are not fullblown psychopaths, they operate at a lower level. You say that there were ways of sp spotting the bad apples. You want to watch the way they interact with others, not you. Someone who is manipulative it probably going to try to manipulate the way you perceive them. People who are nice to you but rude to the waiter, but they are respectful and differential to their supervisors and awful to their peers and plain terrible to subordinates. You say you cant fool all the people all the time and all these folks that theyll show true colours and dont always succeed in the long run. In the long run. Most people will begin healing their people. Theyll develop a reputation of being hostile, rude, arrogant, aloof. A number of interpersonally negative things. The person that coined the term dark triad calls these things socially noxious trait. Its hard to keep the smell under wraps. Hopefully well cap up to them over time. On the stream, were taking you inside the system american justice that includes flawed forensics and faulty confessions dont miss the stream the stream on al Jazeera America jve life. Killing the messenger on al Jazeera America emmy nominations were announced thursday and show cases how television is changing. Hbo is the big winner with 99 nominations for 24 shows led by game of thrones, but the real surprise is netflix, with 31 nominations, beating out traditional broadcast and cable networks, including fox, a. N. C. And showtime. Lets bring in culture critic and former npr arts editor bill wyman. The funny things is the tv nominations are coming so many for net nix, its not television in any trad agencial form. The emmys are not your fath areas empolice, thats true. Its not your fathers emmiss, its your holder brothers. Hes the one that watched the tv online and catches other shows on the individual networks, and oldfashioned tv is attracted in two ways. Game of thrones is a conventional show. Its significant, did well. But the thing where netflix is coming out of nowhere to get that many nomination shows that the model for the industry is it giving people shows online and will make some big waves, and the people that need to be worried is hbo, because thats their game, to throw mini on shows, and not have the accoutrements of the network. Netflix was learned that lesson. Snow the nominations are the nominations are a slap in the face, not one Network Tv Drama was nom tated. It was humiliating. In comedy its different. If you thing the best tv can do is drama pbs had a few nominations. The broadcast networks were humiliated. Theres six nominees or as many as six, we should say, and so Many Networks now putting up really strong dramas, two or three each, and theres probably nine or 10, but theres no way it can all be recognised. It seems the broadcasters are taking it on the chin. Competition is huge. Pbs, a broadcast network had downtown abby nominated. Comedies. Yes, they are different. They fall in love with certain actresses and actors and give them the awards year after year, modern family and the big bang they ary, that sitcom, jim parsons will probably win best actor. I dont know why emmy nominees do that, why they dont spread the wealth around, but thats how it is. The emmy voters are making the statements, they like netflix now set designers, editing, application and acting work. You can see the voters says hey, we like the interlopers coming into the industry, you make a good point. Some of the complaints were less about snubs, but about the opposite. Shows like breaking bad, which had its last season, doesnt abby downtown abbey, and in the case of modern family and downtownabby, they didnt have the best seasons. Its odd, theres an odd sentimentality, they go back to the well. The people that put on the grammys, they like goodsounding records, even if they are not what you and i call good records. If they are made in a classic mice way. Theres a bit of that with modern family. They like the format and think its a snazzy show and always nominate it. The irony is netflix and the other venues, people are still watching traditional broadcast veterans, millions more than the shows nominated. When the nominations come out, fans of different shows get upset. Snubs . I dont know, i dont buy the snub art. I want to make that clear. If something wasnt nominated, it bent b was nominated instead of a , but people are upset about the good wife, its a quality show, and brooklyn 99, i think its a bad sitcom, i dont see anything. Its so difficult. You can point to three, four, five shows that you would think would get more loves, but cattily. Any predictions . Its hard. When oscars come around theres a lot of prognostication. With emmys, theres no early nods, no golden globs or producer or acting awards. When you look at the predictions, they are almost always wrong. I wouldnt be surprised if true detective does well. Its classy, seems to expand the boundaries of the medium. It may take home best drama. Interesting. I never thought about it that way that there arent predictors before the emmys. Everyone gets them wrong. Good to see you. Thats all for now. Coming up friday on consider this, in time for the world cup trial. Brandy joins us, 15 years after a penalty kick won it all for the u.
