Now coming to life. And getting a charge out of the tesla. The acceleration is insane. The electric car is already hugely popular. And good evenings thank you for joining us. Right now, Health Workers and all of russ focused on dallas. They worry about the spread of ebola, after a liberian visitor there became the first person to be diagnosed on u. S. Soil. The grim reality is dallas wont be the last city to come face to face, and the urgent search now underway for those who have been exposed to the virus, but this first case will have to be repeated. What they found so far, not just the immediate family, but others in the community, everybody School Children may be at risk, and the waiting game to see if more cases develop will take days to complete. In dallas, here is america tonight. Ground zero for the Ebola Outbreak, it is here that he had spent time after arrivalling from liberia, for the people quarantined in this apartment, it is an agonizing wait to discover if they have contracted ebola, authorities in dallas are working to stop any potential transmission, but what has already gotten out and is spreading here is fear. The apartment owner saying that on top of the ebola concerns of the residents are frightening by the swarms. At least eight different languages are spoken here, so that is adding to some of the confusion. The apartment manager went only to say that they have power washed parts of this, trying to make sure the ebola doesnt spread. Beyond this, in this neighborhood, concern for the safety of children. Trying to see what kind of safety precautions they are taking at the school for me to determine whether or not my child is going to be able to return. But others are taking no chances. Especially at schools attended by children, who had come into contact with duncan. Attendance at five effected schools was down 10 thursday according to School District officials. Fanning the flames news of the inhabitants of the apartment, were slapped with a legal order stay home, after the five requests not to leave and had september their kids to school. At the apartment, police are now on hand to enforce the Health Department order. A doctor has been visiting the home to take temperatures twice a day. So far, no signs of common ebola symptoms. High fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Dr. Perkins, went out and assessed the family members today. And determined that there is no symptoms that everything is fine based on his assessment today. Bridging to eight, the number of kids pulled from class. The School District chief says he doesnt think the five schools were contaminated but as a precaution, the premises were cleansed today. Duncan, a father and chauffeur fell ill. But duncan in serious condition at a dallas hospital, his mother, turned to prayer. I pray for you to get well for me to see you. My whole thinking is on you. Now a race against time to track down everyone who might have been in contact with him after he started showing symptoms. Authorities say there are 100 people they would like to speak to, right now a dozening of them have been identified. Still no one other than duncan is showing any symptoms of being sick. What is spreading in texas, is concern. Theres an epidemic as anxiety, and thats as real, almost, as the epidemic of ebola is in wrest africa, but in dallas, the number of people genuinely at risk, is rather small, but theres obviously a greater concern, a larger concern in the community, and we need to provide them reassuring information that actually ebola is not going to spread widely, and those other persons are really not at risk. America tonight, adam, this must be an incredibly difficult upsetting time for people in that commute. It is hard to describe the concern that is being felt here in this community, joey. We have spent the last day and a half with members of the Liberian Community the Robust Community here. Even though she hasnt, and also concerned among paraphernalias. Liberian parents sending their kids to school, they are concerned about potential backlash, and what could happen as a result of that, the concern level here in texas is extremely high right now. Who had the experience of losing her husband, yet she said one thing was said, is that her husband was blamed by some people, who said maybe he was the person who transmitted it, is there a sense of blame against this patient who is diagnosed in dallas . Absolutely there is a sense of blame. You can hear it when you are on the streets of dallas, people wondering why was that person here, was there somalis, that is a big concern. I do have a little bit of a update from the Health Department, i did mention that the apartment manager told me that they did take some precaution to clean the outside of that complex. Highly contagious that was cleaned up, but what the Health Officials are now confirming is that they have not taken any steps to clean up anything inside that apartment, where that the partner of duncan, and a couple of children are in quarantine right now, so there are soiled linens they are still there, we are told they have been wrapped up in a plastic bag, also health didnt firs are telling us joey, they do not expect any more people will be placed in quarantine based on the information that they have so far. But they are still trying to track down some people who may have come in contact with duncan. America tonight adam may for us continuing to follow on the story there. On the spread of the conteh general, what experienced Health Scientists about the risk. The the first and only other potential outbreak in the United States that was chronicled. Doctor jerry jacks joins us now, appreciate your being back with us, we have talked about this, weeks ago, as we first started to hear about the spread in west after ca. And now im wondering as you hear the reports coming out of dallas, do you have a sense of concern about what is happening there. What we are learning is theres approbate we will find some people here who are infected, it is also my sense that there is an unfortunate mistake made in embedded this particular patient, when he reported to the hospital. There was some red flags that certainly should have been heeded. About his symptoms. In large part we are prepared and i dont think we will see a lot of them. I think we will learn something from whats happening right now. One of the big concerns is how will it spread, and how much of an issue that is. And i think we will learn based upon the contacts that this individual has had, so that we will be better able to understand exactly what steps should be taken when we see additional patients just a reminder to views who need to have their minds jogs on this. The Ebola Outbreak you were involved with had to do monkeys. At that point, i recall, you did a lot of work, you and your colleagues did a lot to contain to make sure that no monkeys reached into the community, is there they can to learn for the sign tyes dealing with the human case now from what you are experience was . We had several hundred monkeys that were infected ebola, to the precautions did limit the spread of the disease. Outside of the facility, and one thing that strikes me about what we are hearing happening in dallas, is that you very rarely hear somebody say bleach, and we bout up a heck of a lot of beach in washington, d. C. Area when we had the outbreak in the nonhuman primate facility, and it would seem to me, that talking about outside of this building where they have tried to decontaminate that is a very safe and effective way, and it is very efficacious against the ebola virus. Bleach could make a difference here. Absolutely. So they should at a minimum, they should dump dip those that soiled bedding that everybody is talking about, in a bleach solution. Dr. Jerry jacks now at kansas state university, appreciate your being with us. Thank you for asking me. Adam may, getting an extrucive view on how and why the competition is giving it such a rough ride. Are these brought out by auto dealership tampering your success. I would like to spend my time doing other things than arguing before legislature. A fight that is headed from the show room to the courtroom, as competitors try to put the brakes on tesla. Later, honoring the sacrifice of survivors. Americas broken warriors, why this monument was sup a long time coming. I dont really know whats going to happen to me. On the edge of eighteen only on Al Jazeera America here it is, the teslas. This can go 265 miles on a single charge, it can also speed up from zero to 60 in just over four seconds. That kind of speed more american drivers are making the switch now to electric cars including luxury vehicles like this. Maybe thought about doing it yourself. But the auto maker now faces stiff opposition from the competition, and the debate is driving both sides from the show room, into the courtroom. Who is trying to put the brakes, america tonight adam may is back with an america tonight exclusive. What is your favorite part of this car . What i like is the touch screen. It is like driving a spaceship. Executives are firing back, in their first t. V. Interview about mounting lawsuits filed by traditional auto dealers, d. P. Spoke to america tonight. We have been mischaracterized as trying to destroy the dealer system, to eviscerate the system. And what i say is look, if the dealer system is that weak in and of itself that it cant tolerate any competition, then it probably isnt as good as these dealer associations argue that it is. To unction this conflict, and how it can shake up the industry, you first need to understand test la. Wow, the acceleration is insane. It is a 100,000 modern marvel, all electric, able to travel 300miles on a charge. Arthur blake, bought one of the first 10,000 to roll off the line. Tesla was the dream of elan musk the businessman who made a fortune on papal, dreamed of changing the american car. And the way we buy them. Direct from the manufacturer. I am an i. T. Guy, so i am very comfortable with purchasing things online. Was it hard to drop that kind of koinonia car. It was. It was a little bit of a stretch, for me. But it was something that the more i thought about it the more i wanted it, and maybe it doesnt have to suck. That is what elon set out to say, he wanted to make a car an electric vehicle that didnt suck. Did he succeed . I think he succeeded wildly. I think he even surprised himself as to how well it turns out. But another unwelcomed surprise, a battle with major car dealership organizations. They want tesla to conform, through independent dealerships or else. Because 99. 9 of the market is probably not enough for them. He is a columnist for yahoo auto, and he run asal car lot outside georgia, the latest battle ground. They have set up this match work of laws throughout the decades in order to create what is in essence what i would term a legalized theft cartel. This show room is in the crosshairs of the dealer association. Sense they sell direct to consumers, bypassing franchise dealerships, an unusual state regulation bans more than 150 tesla sale as year. The auto dealers lobby group, claims they exceeded that limit. So they filed a petition with the state to force the show room to shut down. Have you sold too many cars direct to consumers. Are these hampering your success. I would love to spend my time doing other things than traveling to state capitols and arguing before legislatures and our lawyers submitting briefs to courts. On the flip side, it has gotten the word out. That issue has touched every corner of the u. S. Iowa stopped from offering test drives. Tesla has been banned from selling any cars from show rooms in texas, arizona, new jersey, and maryland. And legal battles are brewing in other states like georgia. We wanted to know what is really motivating the Georgia Automobile Association to try and shut down tesla, but they wouldnt sit down and answer our questions. Instead, they sent me a short email that said traditional car dealership increase competition, and provide some Consumer Protections we also reached out to the National AutomobileDealers Association they said they are not involved in this issue, even though many say a video on their website suggests otherwise. And dealers make this process, simple. But recently, some have suggested weakening these laws or eliminating them to bypass dealers completely. Tesla has chosen to enter the marketplace, knowingly, and willfully, in violation of the law. Jim appleton runs the new jersey auto dealership organization. Has accused of operating basically a cartel because of the influence you have over state legislatures. Does he have a point . Many people think that those franchise laws which prohibit manufacturers from directly retailing cars toen co supers were enacted too protect dealers. They were enacted to protect consumers. Because the Franchise System is an extraordinarily efficient way of distributing vehicles and promoting competition. Appleton claim traditional car dealers look out for their customers. Everybody does what is in their interest. Everybody does what is in their economic interest. Compete for your business, and carry out your warranty services. The auto dealers say by cutting out the middleman, by cutting out a franchise dealer you dont have someone to go to bat for you. Who helps thats an interesting relationship. Arguing it is only dealers in recall situation that will stand up. Which is interesting position. And one that is worth exploring given the fact if this were the case, it would have effected the dealers. They are breaking ground on a new facility in n nfl players. There is a patch work of laws you can sell cars in some states you cant in others, you cant test drive cars in some states. Do we need federal intervention . Certainly it would be more efficient to do this in one swoop. Either through the congress, or through the courts. Arent you going to miss your mustang. Yes and no. Christopher is caught in the middle of all of this, he is waiting for his custom ordered tesla to be delivered. It was the best cart buying experience i have ever had. No blow up gorillas on the road. No nothing. No. None of that nonsenses, it was here is your car, these are the options you have selected this is the price. Here is where you sign, and we signed. And it was tremendous. And thats my car. He designed his car on the internet, test drove it at the georgia show room, and put down a deposit. He isnt sure how the unresolved issue between tesla and state regulators will effect delivery. I will do whatever i have to do get the car. You wont let the Dealers Association stop you . No. I think once they get their supply, they will run not walk. So it may be part of your organization some day. We would welcome that. We have the electric lot. Will there be a day when they are for sale in all 50 states you can walk into a show room and toast drive one. Certainly thats our intent. Lets see the engine. There is no engine. It is called the frunk. And thats short for front trunk. In the meantime, die hard fans proudly show off their cars. Hoping to spark a car buying revolution, one vehicle at a time. Will you get another one. Absolutely. Absolutely, without hesitation, as long as i can afford it. Oh. The price. The next challenge. It might be easier to get into one soon, they plan to roll out the model three, that would be a car with a 40,000 price tag by 2017. Ahead on america tonight, stopping ebola, Health Workers warn dallas wont be the last American Community to face the virus, is the nations biggest busiest city ready . If ebola arrives there. He passed away last night while the School Superintendent called eight freak football play, it is the Third High School high School Related death in just over a week. The worry turning to fear as we learn more about the case, and as other cities brace for the possibility that they could face the same questions next. After a man in dallas was diagnosed with ebola, the question on many peoples minds, is will it happen to me . We met up with former new York City Health commissioner, to give us some perspective. So right now, the first ebola case has hit the United States. How concerned should people be . I think we should all be concerned overall, the first case i can certainly expect more. Because there are thousands of cases so far in west africa, and within the next few months there will be hundreds of thousands of cases. And we can expect some of those people to travel. Flights have already been reduced and airports are screening for fives but because symptoms can take up to 21 days it is possible for some of those to go uno tied. We have known about this for monos they have trained hospital personnel, so the city is prepared but again, Everybody Needs to execute on all those plans that have been put in place. When you walk around new york city, it feels like a very congests place. It feel likes one of the worst places the ever a outbreak is that the case. You need to remember, ebola doesnt fly through the air. It comes from direct contact with blood or body fluids from an infected person, so if you are next to them on the subway, you wont get ebola from that person. The way that it can spread is when someone is sick, is through their contact with marry body fluids so the people at risk, are the ones that are taking care of someone who is it who will be touching that person, that is generally medical personnel. Orbit can be people at home, which is what is happening in africa, because the medical facilities are overwhelmed and people are sick and dying. It is estimated the virus has already sickedden over 7,000 people. You have to remember the countries in west africa are completely overwhelmed. There are many many sick people, many healthcare have themselves become infected and dies so there isnt enough people to take care of those. The system is overwhelmed and the world response has been inadequate. And brought wac to the United States, that congress and the Obama Administration fully engaged. Where should their attention be. Lets remember there thousands of cases right now, within a few months there can be potentially millions of cases. Every day we delay a greater response, means more thousands of deaths. So the world needs to response more now, not a month from now, because response so far has been inadequate. Need to be more Treatment Centers more medical personnel, and more organization around that so that people can be treated in a place where they are not spreading it to others. If we act more now we can save people in the future. We are not dealing with something nearly on the scale of west africa can. I dont expect the kind of spread is going to happen in new york city, or the United States. Because we have much larger medical system, and a much better system of Health Departments. That are poised to deal with this. Everybody needs to follow through what the plans are how to contain that when it arrives. Al jazeera, new york city. As we look fourth entire the spread it will be 21 days before we can know whether anyone else in the United States has been infected from this first case, Health Officials say these three weeks are key to con taping the virus. Al jazeera tech correspondent joins us to talk about this, it makes us wonder, how can Health Authorities be so certain that if we wait through these 21 days we will know for certain whether theres any more ifection. It has to do with the nature of ebola itself. You can only catch it if you are symptomatic, so they know when to start the clock, and also because ebola is among many other diseases gauged by a very similar measurement. Something called the basic reproductive ratio. And that is a scale, if you have caught a disease, how many other people are you likely to infect. Per us the sis or whopping cough can effect from 12 to 17 other people. It is very infectious. There are things like hive aids can is between two and five other people, ebola is very low on that scale. Just one to four, and it is because it is very tough to catch, and so epidemiologists are quite confident this is why officials are saying with such confidence that they believe they can contain it here. But you see how much fear there is. Everybody is wondering about the possibility of further conteh general. How could it score be so low on this kind of scale . Well it has to do with the nature of the disease itself,ky only be spread in this one very specific way, and that explain as lot of it being spread in africa, because it is the conditions there are so unhygienic, it is very difficult to be in a place even a healthcare facility clean enough to make sure you wont catch it. But theres also the factor of how the systems modeling of epidemiology tells us what is or is not likely to be spread. When you look at airborne transmissions influenza, or per us the sis, you can look at the social patterns of a persons life. Someone who is kick will go off to work anyway, you get on the bus, you kiss your kids you go to work, and infect everybody. Ebola is not like that, the second you feel those symptoms you will go home, and after a little while you will go to the hospital. So the places in your life to infect other people are very limited. Two various Contact Tracing programs they do know about the patterns and follow them. Helping us to understand the Science Behind the spread of ebola, thank you. Skyrockets tuition, why Many College Bound kids and their families are reconsidering, is College Worth it . Having the freedom to pursue knowledge for knowledge sake, is a huge privilege. The sticker stock of Higher Education has some kids and their parents wondering if a bachelors degree is worth the money any more. America tonight travels to San Francisco, to the heart of a new experiment stall movement, focused on getting kids ahead, the uncollege way. It is full. And all across america, a new batch of students are leaving the nest and heading to college. The average cost to over 16,000 a year, a staggering 40,000 a year for private school. As she looked for schools for her sonic to attend walk me through your head. How am i going to do this, how do we make sure we can provide our kids with the same opportunity that our paraphernalias provided us with. This place looks nice. Thats one reason why he ended up here. An experiment stall program in San Francisco where students spend a single year preparing themselves. For the real world. It is called uncollege. College may not have been the best rout for me right away. He wasnt sure what he wanted to do. I didnt want my parents to go through college and just have wasted money if i didnt find out what i wanted to do. I said i feel like we might as well just throw a pile of money in the backyard and set it on fire if you just go off to school right now. Are being told they havem to go to a college to get waydegree to get a job. They are not necessarily obtaining the right skills to actually be employable, we are going to do everything we can to help you. They can have a robust skills they will have interned at a company, and shown off their skills. They will have traveled abroad and understand what it means tor flexible, in a new environment. And you can tell these are smart kids. Do you have any proof that taking this course is going to prove more successful than going to a traditional four year academic institution. If you look at the Employment Outcomes over the last year, 76 of the folk whose have done the program are employed or taken or have receive add job offer in the field they were pursuing a lot better than the one in four that colleges are doing right now. Still, the focus on employment, at the expense of a broader education, has earned critics. You are teaching students to develop skills to get jobs just for the sake of getting a job, as opposed to pursuing an education for the sake of getting an education. What would you say do that . Having the freedom to pursue knowledge for knowledge sake, is a huge prief lins, and i admire anyone who has the resources and flexibility to do that. But for many thats not possible. Thanks in part that he received for another organization that is publicly challenging the central of a public wedguation. I was the first recipient to start a confers about the future of higher ed. The foundation paid young adults not to go to college. Only laugh of College Grads end up having jobs and only half of those are jobs relevant to their degrees. The feel fellowship is a program where we award 100,000 to enable to them to pursue their own ideas their own companies right now, rather than waiting for a point in the future that may not come to pass. 83 young adults have received the award. To create new currencies each success an argument against a traditional four year degree. We have blown away by what they have built, and what they have been doing. Running with an idea. Far outweighs the benefit of that degree. In addition to investing in the Mark Zuckerbergs of the future, they hope to send the message that college simply may not be for everyone. Society says have like a Meaningful Life and get a good job, you need to go to college, well, what about jeff else . The statistics show that an individual with a College Degree, outearned someone who doesnt have one by a considerable amount. So isnt this approach a little bit overly risky. Depends on the choices an individual makes going to college may make financialceps, certainly. But it may also be something if you are not thinking carefully about your choices may actually really constrain the kind of future you want to have. Next year we are planting on opening a double edition size. Dale stephens believing the increasing number of applicants shows there is a Strong Demand for his alternative to a four year degree. We have proven theres at least 200 people a year who want to do this. Will it go to 1,000 . Probably. Will it two to 10,000 . I dont know. Our motivation in doing this is to create a place where people who are misfits in the educational system can be themselves and grow and thrive. As she prepared to return home, nicks mother is just happy her son will be able to explore who he is, without necessarily breaking the bank. Thank you, have fun. I am so thrilled he is having this opportunity. I have given him the foundation, he is the person he was meant to be. At this point in his life. This is the last tune i can give him a tool, and use it. Michael al jazeera, San Francisco. Georgetown professor tony Carter Valley researchers the connection between education and employment. He joins us here, when you think about how expense escape from isil College Educations have become, how difficult it is to find a job, you can sort of start to understand why maybe a young person would look at this and say gee, this wont be worth it, is it. The only thing more expensive than going to college is not going to college. College is worth on average, a bachelors degrees worth a cool Million Dollars more than a high school degree. Now, theres huge variation in value. Depending on what your degree is in. Yes. In the end, what you take, largely determines what you make. So if you major in Petroleum Engineering you will make 124,000 a year, if you major in psychology, a lot of young people do, you will make 30,000 unless you get a masters degree, so there are different path ways educational path ways that lead to different career path ways and thats the way to think about college now, not just as a degree. But a lot of people have to think about what their potential is for long term employment, unemployment is a big factor, even on the minds of a very young person coming out of school. If you are graduating from college in the last several years since 2007, prospects have been much dimmer. Unemployment has gone up almost to 10 , but when the rates were peeked at 10 , the Unemployment Rate for High School Graduates was almost 30 , much is the true now, Unemployment Rates for recent graduates ising around 7 , but for high school, they are almost 20 . So its a matter of compared to what . Is that is it is still your best bet. There is also that factor for young people, some of them at that age 17, 18, i need to find myself. I need to take a year off. One that going to cut into their long term prospects. It all depends. It depends on the individual. In the case of what we find is that in the case of upper middle class kids lets say kids that come from families with parents who went to college, number one, families that make over 100,000 a year, and combine parental income, that taking a year off doesnt do much damage, if you dont come from one of those families effectively year you take off reduces your chances of ever graduated by about 15 . It doesnt take more than a year or two before the likelihood that you will graduate, that life interferes or the bihl to make a little money and live on your own becomes much too tempting. And the long term becomes more difficult, good reminders for these young people as they consider their futures. Thank you so much. Affording their futures is just one of the issues facing americas young people today. Al jazeera america, edge of 18 following 15 High School Students and all the challenges they face. Next episode of edge of 18 airs friday at 9 00 p. M. Eastern, and then this weekend on the edge of 18, an undocumented student facing the very question, how can i afford college . Thats sunday at nine eastern. Ahead in our final segment this hour, a long awaited salute, the newcomer among washington memorials this one, is for the survivors. Finally from us this hour, a thought about how we honor duty and sacrifice. Here this weekend, the opening of a first of its kind monument, a national memoir to disabled veterans. Broken warriors the briers in armed who live to honor their fallen comrades finally, getting their due salute. It is possible for a man to lose half of his physical being and still become whole. What echos here are the words of survivors, in a city better known for its memorials to the dead. Other monuments in the nations capitol rightly honor the ultimate sacrifice of americas military men and women. But this is the First National monument to reck nice the wounds physical and emotional of those that return from battle forever changed. You are immortal, i thought i would come back, perhaps i wouldnt, there was that thought too. But i had this feeling that i would come back. Why so many quotes what was the thinking in. We wanted to express different thoughts in the veterans journey, we wanted to express their call to service, we wanted to express what it was like to be injured, we want to express what it was like in rediscovering healing and then rediscovery in life. They are the voices so often unheard. The sacrifices that play out over a lifetime. Long after the guns have fallen silent. I was naive, and clue less about the horrors that war can inflict on awe human beings mind and body. She was a young starlet when she signed on to entertain recoverying veterans. As i walked into that room, i saw young men, young, lying on gurneys, hobbling on crutches. Broken. Oh. Without limbs. Some burned so badly all over their bodies, yous that were just sockets no ears or nose. I brought with me the song somewhere from west side story, it was a very popular show at that time, and i nerve ousley began to sing that song. I got to the line hold my hand and i will take you there. And i reached out to hold a young soldiers hand, and he had no hand, and when i left, i thought okay, if i ever can i want to do something for disabled veterans, i promised myself that i would. Inspired by a visit, pope began a journey to make good on that promise. 16 years later flame has finally been lit. This memorial is for the 4 million living disabled veterans and the hundreds of thousand whose have died before them. I want people to know that the cost of war doesnt end when the guns are silenced. I want them to know that, they continue to battle every day, every day. Pope helped raise money donated some of her own, lobbies congress, and the then secretary of Veterans Affairs jesse brown, whose words are also here. For every tragic story of a life unraveled by military battle, there are a dozen tails of individuals who have managed to triumph, over the harrowing experiences of war and ruin. The rows of glass have 18 different quotes etched into them, and images, depicting the stories of countless servicemen, and women, like felisha wes stob. I felt so alone watching what was happening by this point i knew i had been hurt, but i just wanted to find somebody from my company. Project director gave us a tour.
