They know not to use cell phones or traditional modes of communication that the u. S. Intelligence is monitoring or watching. I think it would be very rare that western intelligence would be able to infiltrate a group like that. That is not osay that maybe some of our arab partners or allies would not be able to infiltrate a group like that. The jordanns or others could have somebody on the periphery of that are group . They have better intelligence than we do, people on the ground and ties to people in khorasan. To be able to target the group the way that we did in and around aleppo knowing where the potential leaders were, being able to target bombmaking factories, communication networks, command and control, you cant get all of that from satellite and Surveillance Technology so there has to be some human intelligence collection going on. Not rural, widespread outside the cities but whats new unprecedented, but how we go about trying to control this ebola, that its urban as well as rural. So get to that point, i mean whats the difference . Why cant we just use the same techniques that have contained the virus in the past . Because in my opinion were not able to adequately implement those techniques. There is nothing wrong with the techniques, contact tracing, isolating the people who are sick, so they cant transmit the virus, whereas you can do that in rural settings you cant effectively do that in crowded cities. And monrovia and freetown are the proof of that. You are concerned, when we say the cdc, says, 1. 4 million, you have shown you cant control past. It is a Staggering Number in a very short period of time. We havent been able to control the virus in monrovia or freetown and if there are that many more cases in the next couple of months it is going to be very, very difficult in my opinion in keeping it from spreading into other countries and other continents outside of africa. Is it possible the virus itself may have morphed into a different virus, one that needs to be treated a different way . There has been a lot of controversy and discussion about that. My opinion, the way to understand that is to study the virus, has it mutated . If so has it conferred any ability of the virus to become either less dangerous or more dangerous . Does it kill a higher percentage of people or lower percentage of people . Has it been able to spread through the air . Which it hasnt in my opinion. The proof of that i probably would be dead. On assignment in sierra leone, visited a Holding Center in the city of maka thrvetioni and found makani and told people were left there to die. That there was a big problem there that they were getting getting i getting panicked calls from hospital officials, nobody could cope. They were wanting to send ten, 20, 50 patients a day all of last week because they had nowhere to put them. There are no ebola Treatment Facilities at all in mckeny. The director, dr. Bar when we met him at the hospital he was actually locked in his office. As soon as we walked in he said, dont touch the doors. He took us to the Holding Center which was set up last week ahead of the National Lock down, specifically to house patients that turned up during those three days of lock down. He took us out to the Holding Center which was a converted University Building. It was meant to be a University Building but they had absolutely no other place to put people. So they were using that to house patients. He said they had 48 patients on the day we were there and patients were coming in on a daily basis, and they were having to pile them into ambulances and send them to the Treatment Centers which are at least eight, if not 16 hours drive away. We saw wards where there were fluids on the floor. Pills strewn around. Rags, clearly people had been vomiting, defecating, potentially bleeding on all of the surfaces everywhere. The worst thing that i saw was a toddler, a baby, who had fallen off one of the beds, and was lying sprawled on the floor. On some rags. And his mother was next to him. And she was too sick to lean down and pick the baby up off the floor. So as far as i could see, the three days of lockdown were turning up suspected and confirmed ebola cases, new cases, which is an important and good thing. People go out and you still see people upset, they want answers, they want justice, the department of justice is out there today, their Civil Rights Division is holding a meeting, they want to investigate into the police department, allegations of excessive use of force, special private meetings to talk about their interactions with the police department. Private meetings, you say there will still be opportunities to go behind the closed doors with city leaders . That is what the Civil Rights Division is doing. But we were reporting on the town hall happened, and there are four more opportunities at least for more town halls Going Forward with specific topics all the way into november, theyre going to be talking about communication and diversity and racial tension. Our interviewee, the fragile relationship between french hill and esawea cracked. They looted the Small Convenience store and caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage. For the palestinian residents of is awea, the outbreak of injustice, mohamed has lived here all his life. He argues the space were walking on is soul. What do you think . I know that maybe they have troubles but im this is not a reason to hate me. Victor has lived with his daughter in french hill for eight years. He loved it here, but now he shows me the spot where outside the house, his car was burned. Today his daughter doesnt feel safe walking through her own neighborhood. Atlanta is considered ground zero for homeless gay kids rejected by their parents. Tracking down these kids, trying the to get them help. D trying to get them hem. Do you think the family rejection is greater here because we are in the south, in the bible belt . Oh without question, statistically we know that to be the case. He often finds teenagers as young as 16 down here underthis under this bridge. Imagine. It is unimaginable. Many of these are intelligent kids, they are not coming from a poverty stricken life but because of the household they are cut off and have nothing else to do. 2,000 children are homeless in atlanta, who identify as gay lesbian transsexual or transgender. They engage in activities, like survival sex, looking up so you have a warm place to sleep at night, often they will use drugs so they can stay awake, keep their with wits about themselves, or petty criminal activity like stealing, pickpocketing, digging in a dumpster for food, Something Like that. They just chose to go out on their own. Reporter ryan peterson, knows all about survival. Until a few months ago, he was homeless. These streets, theres definitely a lot of memories like walking down just after being awake for three days, walking into mcdonalds just to get a milk shake because i had had nothing to eat. For days. For days. At 23 hes lived a life few can imagine. I grew up in walnut grove, georgia. Rural area . Very rural, yeah. I knew i was gay when i was in about middle school. Did your family embrace that or was there a conflict . I was very rebellious. I was very much like, okay mom im going to throw it in your face that im gay. Because i thought it was because she didnt like that i was gay. And she didnt love me because of it. At that time, thats what i thought. But now being sober as i am and getting back in connection with my mom, i can only imagine what i put her through. What she went through. Because all she did was try for me. Big of to you take on some of that blame and responsibility. My family was scared of what would happen to me. Now that im looking back on it they were just scared. Reporter ryans internal struggles led the promising gymnast who loved theater to drop out of school and flee to the city of atlanta at 17. How did you make money . One of my major sources of income was porn, for a while. That was a long road. But after that, i dated a drug dealer. I didnt really have to have a job. Drugs. Porn. Uhhuh. Trust me, the whole epitome of party gay life, ive pretty much done. Reporter sometimes ryan said he would frequent adult bookstores, video booths and bathhouses looking for someone seeking a quick hookup so he wouldnt have to sleep on the streets. What was your low point . My first one was in california. I had woken up on the roof of somebodys house after being awake for about five days. And i was still rolling, still high, and i just looked around, and i started crying. I missed my family. And i called my cousin and she bought me a plane ticket back. And i got back, and i started to get my life back on track. And then i found out i was positive. And when i found out i was positive hiv positive. Yes, hiv positive. It crushed me. Not because of the fact that i was positive. Because of the fact that i couldnt have kids. Thats what really crushed me the most. Because ive always wanted kids and i always will. After that, ryan turned back to a life on the streets. Using and dealing crystal meth. His 300 a day habit led to a second low point. You recall crashing here . Uhhuh. Were you paying rent . Huhuh. I remember just walking up here, walking between buildings, carrying drugs, taking them to other people. Its hard. Some places are just memories that just need to stay memories. Youre done with this . I am. I have to be. Reporter fearing death, ryan found the strength to reach out to an Organization Called lost and found. Founder Rick Westbrook showed us a new shelter they were trying to build, to house atlantas homeless lgbt youth. Most people know the daniel pit story, thats got national, international recognition. Thats something that happens every day. Were fortunate enough that daniel hilt record on his phone. Hit record on his phone. Loss and found have helped 400 homeless kids in the last three years including Daniel Pierce. We know nationwide we have 24 to 48 hours before they have to do something illegal to survive. Whether that be steal from a Grocery Store or convenience store, just to put some food in their bodies, or sell drugs, or take drugs to cope, or sell themselves. Youve been around other people in similar situations as you. Uhhuh. Why why are there so many . Gay teenagers go through a lot in the south. There are still parts of the south where the ku klux klan still exist. There are parts of the south where you will get beaten up if gay. What is the message to the Greater Community . I need straight people to talk to their families. And wrap their head around, its not okay to kick your kid out on the street because of words you read in a book. This has got to stop, plain and simple. Reporter for first time in years ryan has a steady jobs. Womens is right there and mens is down there. Hired by lost and found to work in their thrift store. On the day of our interview he was 100 days clean and sober. He also started reconnecting with his family and making plans to go to college. Theres so much love here. Its like a second family. Every day i come to work here. Im in love with it. There are hard days. There are stressful days but at the end of the day, these people are my family. Where would you be without them . Probably still using. And probably, still lost. And still hating myself. And still thinking there was no escape. Taking his escape one day at a time. This is a fascinating story and i think a lot of people have been moved by the story of daniel, the young man in that video, what has he been doing now . That story went viral, daniel im really happy to report i just got an update on him and im told hes doing great right now. Hes really been able to take this situation and move in a new direction in his life. He did get some help from that organization, lost and found and they have pen trying to put him on a better past, they have been working with his own family, theres a distant relative and daniel is staying with that person now and trying to figure out with what to do with all this money he has raised. Now that hes made 100,000 in donations any additional money he is giving to that lost and found organization to help lost youth and getting involved in that organization too. That 100,000 is a pretty substantial figure. Thats a large chunk of money. He can get housing, he can get a car. One of the things hes expressed he wants to get a vehicle. Anything on the agenda . Hes working with counselors to figure out what the best path for him is. Hes devoted to animals and maybe working in a pet shop is something involved in his issue. The other young man, that you interviewed rather extensively, ryan how he is doing . Ryan is actually doing really really well, still clean and sober more than 100 days. H days. He had a serious addiction to crystal meth, 300 a day. You can imagine some of the things he had to do to support that drug habit. One of the interesting things i found out from him is hes incredibly intelligence, hes taught himself computer science, he wants to get into i. T. Work, hes working at lost and found he hopes some day he will be on a really solid past where he can help other kids as well. This is an organization whose work is still needed, still active. Still active. Were talking hundreds of gay lesbian b biswal youth on the streets of atlanta. Bisexual youth on the streets of atlanta. Also help the homeless lgbt population as well but definitely a big problem there in atlanta and they do need resources to combat it. America tonights adam may, thanks so much.
