Frightened. We try okeep them safe to keep them safe so they might not be profiled and get shot because they look certain way. S fear and loathing in the be salinas valley. And a man armed and dangerous and packing explosives. Still communicating with friends. We speak with one of them. In an exclusive interview. That wasnt the real ryan. This is. Gls good evening, thank you for joining us. Im sheila macvicar. Joie chen is off tonight. The release of a prisoner of afghanistan is a reality tonight. But to secure his release the release of five members of the taliban l held at guantanamo bay. Some soldiers allege Sergeant Bergdahl was a deserter. After five years, sargd Bowe Bergdahl is a free man. Freedom is yours. I will see you soon my beloved son. I love you bowe. Even during this joyous time his parents recognize the difficult road ahead. Give yourself all the time decompress. There is no hurry. You have your life ahead of you. 28yearold sergeant bergdz 28yearold Sergeant Bergdahl is now at a being hospital in germany. Preparing for most grueling journey yet the journey home. Bowe has been gone for so long, it is going to be very difficult to come back. The United States released five high ranking taliban soldiers from guantanamo bay. Its a move that immediately sparked outrage in washington. There are question about these individuals who are being releaseanreleased and the condis under which they will be released. These are the hardest of the hard core, highest risk people. Some feel that the president may have broken the law by noting notifying congress 30 days prior to the matter. It is a matter of breaking the law. Sergeant bergdahls health was in decline they say and they had to work quickly. It was absolutely the right thing to do, consistent with our tradition in the United States to secure his return. And making it difficult, the relationship with l afghanistans leaders worse. The release of five afghan citizens in being being being, exchange for Bowe Bergdahl. Arriving in qatar which help negotiate the deal. They will remain there for at least one year under a travel ban and house arrest. Complicating the cost of Sergeant Bergdahls freedom are allegations about his own conduct. Some soldiers who served with bergdahl say he abandoned his post before being captured. He desserted not only deserted not only the army but myself my platoon and my company to clean up his mess. But bake in hal evergreen back in halley, idaho. I know people will respect his prierves and his path. We want to mention thatting Al Jazeera Americanesss Parent Company is based in qatar and this channel is financed in part by the be qatar government. Rolling thunder is very many family. Thank you for coming. There are allegations that Sergeant Bergdahl walked away from his post. Should that make a difference in the outcome . I think its much, much too early to bl consider that. Basically they havent made they determinations to my knowledge so i really dont know. I cant really comment on that part yet. Were not prif yeah to those privy to those types of information pieces though. But you this sergeant was held as a pow and has now been returned. Correct, yes. How difficult is his road to recovery, he has difficulty speaking english, its hard to understand an adult who spoke english all his life. How difficult would his recovery be . If i put myself in his position, i would have a tendency through repeatthings every day through five years, you naturally have to sort of fit in, in a way, to a point where you have picked up some necessary habits that you are going to now get rid of. And hes going to come through it probably just fine. I cant imagine this hes not. Now its been a long time since the pow for sump long time. Are there programs in place to help him . How will your organization help him and his family when he does return to the u. S . Well, weve helped his family. His mother and father in the past chapter 3 in virginia has been instrumental in dealing with a matter of finance. And things like that. He was still a prisoner of war and made that people along the way knew that everywhere we went. I still wear a wrist band which indicates that his name answer on there with the date of capture. Still a pow and so forth. But to know one thing he was the very last pow as far as this time frame goes. This conflict. And everything in the power of the government and the power of the military says basically and they guarantee that they will leave no one behind. Thats the truth of every u. S. Military personnel, no one left behind. You thank you very much. Youre welcome. 83,000 listed as prisoners of war or missing in action since world war ii. So should the United States be concerned about the release of these five taliban prisoners . Joining me now is film maker and correspondent najib katah. Thanks for joining us najib. Lets look at your experiences on the front line with taliban. Chart district in afghanistan. Just moments away as a group of taliban fighters prepare to launch an attack on an afghan army base. Told me exactly when theyre going oattack. They just said its going to happen around sunrise. And then suddenly, the fighting begins. The talibans heavy machine guns is ready. These taliban have little or no formal military training. And the ana fight back. To allow the rest of the taliban to enter the base, these suicide bombers have been sent to blow up the main gate. But they have to first avoid heavy fire coming from inside. The taliban fighters are trying to raid the base. I need to stick with them, even though its really dangerous. Im just running after them. Theres a helicopter. The helicopter might be armed so the taliban run for cover. Many there are 200 meters of open ground between the wall and the base. [ explosions ] the taliban had hoped this would be a victory but its becoming clear that they are facing far greater resistance than they had expected. Film make are najv katta, joins me. Given your time with the taliban how do you assess their military strength on the battle feet at this point in time, looking of course to the ultimate withdrawal of american troops. Its difficult osay a lot about the taliban because its an underground movement in many places in afghanistan. But the thing we can see actually is the activity has increased a lot for past two years. And olo a lot of average afghane being killed every force he are being killed every month. So the sign is they are gaining strength. Many are concerned that these five very senior members of the taliban who have been in guantanamo for years, will return to afghanistan and indeed join the fray there. Do you think that will be what will happen with these men . Of course you cant rule out that these taliban members, they will join their former comrades and fight with them after a year or command them. But at the same time, we have to remember that theyve been in captivity for a lot of years. And the italian, the new are and the taliban, the new taliban, has changed a lot, it has evolved and it has actually attracted many young members and also many highranking young members so the question is whether these guys, they are too old. Other than the age difference cxg is there anything, is there anything different from the taliban now than the taliban when these men were taken prisoner . Yes. Theres you know kind of a ideological difference also. The italian before was a much more ideologically movement. In some areas the taliban are much more pragmatic now. They try to win the hearts and minds because theyve understood that theyve made a lot of mistakes and lost support in some of these rural afghan areas. And you other places part and other places the taliban are just a criminal organization. So you have for example these two branches of the taliban taliban. Do you think that the release of these five men will be a signal to the taliban that hostage taking, u. S. Troops are due to leave, there are other westerners still in afghanistan, will be a signal that hostage taking is very profitable and prison . This is not unsimilar to a lot of other hostagetaking that the taliban has been behind. The other hostages that theyve taken have been civilians, actually. And this is actually the First Exchange of a military hostage. But its actually quite important to say that the secretary of defense chuck hagel actually said that this is not ahostage, that bergdahl is actually a prisoner of war. And this is a total different situation. So its actually a new stance from the states, that they actually accept that military personnel was taken 50 taliban they are prisoners of war. Taken bit taliban they are prisoners of war. A sign of the movement. Thank you very much. Thank you. After the break trust issues. What im seeing is a police force with fear. And im also seeing a collective with fear. And that is very problematic. Inside the crisis in salinas and the community thats crying out for its police force to serve and protect. Being man hunt for a man being suspected of being being explosives. Be a letter on his facebook page, in it he describes battling depression and having visited what he called dark websites. Chamberlain denied he had any explosives and also that he was involved in terrorism. Authorities say be on the look out for a white Nissan Altima. Associates and friends have expressed disbelief. In an exclusive interview, america tonights sarah hoye spoke to one of them. As the nationwide man hunt continues for aman suspected of possessing explosives those who knew him, want answers. In case the scheduled link on drop box doesnt look, i read it and it sounded like a suicide letter. The fbi want more details, raising more questions than answers, ryan chamberlain. His friend,Ariel Hampton. Ryan was a really nice cool guy that everybody liked. And i think that what he writes in the letter, about going through deep depression, is like he talks about like failures in his personal relationships, he talks about feeling good when hes not with people but feeling horrible when hes alone. I knew it would be hard to fake the way did he it. I mean the way he did it seems like him. One of my friends yesterday tweeted, like if anyone would ever live tweet being on the lamb from the fbi ryan would do the best job ever. So this is in his character to do Something Like this. To make sure that people can see what he was thinking and going through. Hampton, a former reporter for the San Francisco examiner, routinely quoted chamberlain in his stories pfn h. He saw the 42yearold at a tech events. Chamberlain givers little insight as to why he might be in possession of exploirve explosives. I think thats why he is not with us. Like you dont do this and like hes making a expect challenge out of the end. But he talks about suffering from depression, for as long as i can recall, and bids farewell to family and friends. I hope that he is actually alive. I think hes probably not but i hope he is. And yet another online posting available to friends only. Chamberlain claims the reports are false. Saying in part i explored some ugly websites, i was depressed. No one was ever in danger. And recently, i was all better. However, the fbi said chamberlain is considered armed and dangerous and possibly driving a Nissan Altima with california or texas plates. If you have any sightings or anything you know, please let us know so we can bring him in and everybody is safe. Declined to describe the type of explosive inside his apartment. The investigation is ongoing. They do say possibilities of ricin in the apartment. No radiation known at this time. Chamberlain described himself as a media junkie, has a background in San Francisco politics and Public Relations and media expert. Still Ariel Hampton cant believe its come to this point for his friend. The ryan i knew wouldnt write that unless he planned to do it. Unless something stopped him hes probably dead. They cant find him because hes not moving. Sarah hoye, al jazeera, washington. No indication that he planned any kind of attack and nothing to indicate what he intended to do with the materials hed been gathering. James weddikc a former and us. Thank you very much, mr. Wed dfergick. Dfergick rk weddick. How did the fbi become interested in the apartment . Gom got some information that they then made contact with some confidential informants, probably some cooperating witnesses, got the information that was sufficient to establish probable cause then they sought the assistance of a u. S. Magistrate and printed the case and were able to get the search warrant as we know today, and they went into his place. How unusual is it that that search swarnt still sealed . Warrant is still sield . Not unusual. When someone is still at large and they are still conducting an investigation, authorities frequently will ask the judge to seal the indictment, or in this case the affidavit supporting the search warrant. Ive done it many times. When agents been into the apartment, what was it that they were looking for . They were looking for hazardous chemicals, explosive devices, information that hes connected to some sort of terrorist network or that he intends to do harm here in the United States or possibly elsewhere. And in addition to looking at the kind of materials he gathered, obviously his internet search history, were they looking at other things that could help them find what is now a man hunt . Fortunately today they did get into his apartment. They did have access to all his material so today, i dont doubt had a theyre, aside from gathering the evidence with respect to the explosives, they are looking at address books, emails, making contact with relatives to see who he was in contact and where he might be going. Theres no status quo, just the bottom line. But, what about buying shares in a professional athlete . Real perspective, consider this on Al Jazeera America for five years now College Athletes have been caught up in a rivalry against the digital image of themselves. These talented players have yet to receive a dime of the 3. 8 billion revenue. Tonight theres more to it. In a landmark settlement, 40 million worth of payouts could go to more than 100,000 current and former football and basketball players. America tonights adam may has been following the story. He spoke to one player who could finally be cashing in. Sam keller is now the offensive coordinator at suaru high school. A long way from his former position as college quarterback. Youre a student first then youre aan athlete. School, practice, weights that are scheduled for you. It almost feels like youre a robot and they just hammer it into you. You become like a soldier. You eat sleep and breathe football and your team meetings, especially for a quarterback. Keller says it wasnt until his playing days were over that he found what he calls the money making machine all around him. Its much driven on money. As a College Football player, youre not seeing that, youre what drives the money but your join is not obuy into all that. Your job is your teammates and your school, your institution. Sam keller now works at a restaurant and bar in scottsdale, arizona. He now thinks that College Athletes should be able to capitalize if they can on their celebrity. The flip side of that argument, look, he is a college athlete, they are getting room and board, thats enough. No its not enough, not enough at all. If you look at whos benefiting more, everybody else is benefiting more. The ncaa is benefiting more. The schools are benefiting more because people dont come to these games or turn into these games, they wand johnny manziel. They want temp texas a m. And what drove keller to sue the ncaa is this video. E a sports. On the left, sam keller in his playing days at arizona state. On the right, the avenu avatar for arizona states quarterback that same year. Tall attributes match up perfectly. A few years later, keller played for nebraska. Again his picture and his avatar are nearly identical. Righthanded. Everybodys the same, they had everybody nailed down to a t. If you had a generic number, with no semblance to that roster on that college team it would be a lot less appealing. Illegally allowing essmentsa sports to ea sports to use their likeness in the game. An email from executives, using video designers use real athletes names in the designing process then removing it before the video is released. They dont want this to be let out into the public, it would be a problem. They do it and still do it, this is exactly the type of thing that could submarine the game if it got into the media. If it got into the media. Absolutely, yep. Wow, when you got this email what did you think . Everyone knew they used the likenesses in the game. Do you believe the ncaa is exploiting these student athletes . I do. Do i think theyre exploiting them. You cant make money off the backs of student athletes and not share it with them and pretend theyre amateurs when youre treating them like professionals. Everyone is make money off it. Everyone but the student athletes. The ncaa declined to speak to us for the story but in july it announced it would not renew its contract with ea sports when it renewed next year. Saying, we are confidence with our video games but given the Business Climate and the cost of litigation we determined participating in this game is not in the best interest of ncaa. Dave zurin is a sports columnist. I think the ncaa is going ohave to figure out how to settle this suit and get it out of the court. While the lawyers like a lengthy battle, the more they lose the argument in the court of Public Opinion and i think thats what the ncaa is really concerned about more than anything else. Sam keller says hes not bitter because he didnt make the pros and i is not looking for apayday. Whatever happens i just hope its fair. And im not looking to make anything out of it. In fact i never have even asked them what i could make out of it. Its more about the business are picture. Its knot about me, its about everyone else, its about everybody, about College Football as a whole. Adam may, al jazeera. How will this historic settlementing affect the ncaa, were joined by xavier pope. Mr. Pope, thank you for joining us. Is this a done deal . Sheila, this is not a done deal. You have over 100,000 players. And ea sports has the opportunity to potentially not go with a settlement if too many players opt out of these settlement agreements. In other words if players decide that they could file suit themselves or that they would want to go ahead with their own litigation . Yes, thats a great question, sheila. Ive had actually my office inundated with calls from former players saying how does this affect me potentially . And you have them not being represented necessarily by council, part of this settlement includes payments of bl three or 4,000, how they were using the game, so this is undetermined. And so this is still not not over. This is not to the finish line yet. So the impression that there could be some people with a big payday here would seem to be an erroneous one. Were talking about 40 million, that is certainly a lot of money but a lot of players and a lot of ways in which that pie could be divide. 100,000 players, 40 million. And some of the named plaintiffs of the suit get 15,000 each. There is another part of the trial that continues on starting june 9th. That includes the ncaa which was not a part of the settlement so this is a long ways from being over, sheila. I suppose like most litigation of this nature, we know the big payday has gone to the lawyers. But to turn to the question raised in the piece. The issue of the professionalization of the student athletes, in recognizing recognizing that these students should benefit in some way, is this a step down the road for a more regular kinds of payday for these student athletes . Absolutely, sheila. You knew the nlrb ruling, that is right of pa ruling was actually included as far as the depositions and a trial for these plaintiffs here but not necessarily allowed as far as evidence. You see all the different avenues that our players are looking to get paid. The ncaa has to look the it and decide do they want the area of law to determine their Business Model or do they want to do it inhouse and step out in front of the legal issues that are at hand. Xavier pope, thoughts to think about, thank you for joining us. Thank you. Ahead in our final segment, picture this. Why this small Washington Town is looking ahead.
