Today we are facing an assault. I was in the middle of the council of ministers with all the members, including the Prime Minister. And we were attacked with very heavy weaponry for 5 hours. But now everything is under control, and one thing i can assure you there is no side that is the length of his co attempt. It is an isolated force, but as it is also linked to the people we fought. When i was elected president of the republic, i promised to fight to thanks corruption and drug trafficking. And this is also linked to theirs and i knew what the price was, but the fight continues. Your u. K Prime Minister Bowers Johnson has pledged more support for ukraines army in the face of what he is calling russian aggression. For 4 minutes, practice, ah, but to achieve their dream of becoming afghanistans 1st ever, when to an m p. M, they will have to overcome many mountains, carving a path of hope and inspiration, where the light shine witness on al jazeera. The coverage of the showdown between russia and ukraine, where new walls is missing an edge. B as really government re boots a Field Program in the change of the narrative on its treatment of palestine and Hollywood Tape on the Climate Change stored in their plan. It is about to be destroy the explicit critique of journalism in dont look up a warmer to reduce burden. Youre at the listening post where we examined the media and look at how news is reported in the coverage of bilateral conflicts, like the one between russia and ukraine. There was a journalistic tendency, the taking of sides, ask reporters from ukraine or its western allies who they see as the villain. And most will point to russia and Vladimir Putins imperialist ambitions. Put that question to journalists in moscow, and theyll give you a History Lesson on nato. Its aggressive expansion to the east. Add some complex history, sprinkle in some disinformation, mainly from the russian side. And it leaves audiences wherever they are short of the full story. The fact is, there are currently more than 100000 Russian Troops stationed on or close to the ukrainian border. The fact also is that the kremlin has been waging a hybrid war in ukraine since 2014 part military threat part information warfare. Were focusing on the information war, which means our starting point is growing rocketry starting with an argument. Its coming out of moscow on the role of the media play in the ukraine store and equivalence that just as the economy. Its one you sometimes hear from journalists employed at russian state on news channels like r t. Most russia Media Outlets echo the kremlin lying on ukraine. But then again, most western Media Outlets echo the white house was lying under cranes in russia. Not only in state media that kind of run the line, its also the private media thats not controlled by the crime and the same in the west. I mean, the bbc told the British Government line and the time, or the telegraph, which are notionally independent, they do the very same thing. I know they do know western Media Outlets are prone to echoing some of their governments positions on geo political conscience. But theyre also free to present the contrary attainments, and to speak truth to power. Dont believe it, just by legislative or board of johnson lockdown. Try back, trying to journalism in russia, on flatter, mere putin. And youre liable to be branded a foreign ha, have your news channel taken off the air . Or like just didnt, alexis only get thrown into prison . There is no equivalence, which is not to say that when it comes to the history of russia, ukraine, and nato, the russians dont have some legitimate points to make. What have always to ask, where does this story begin . And the russian that goes back to the 1909. Hes in the diplomacy, the ended, the cold war, which the west took advantage of it. Theres also an element of truth to the story that theyre telling. And there is a way in which the western media just simply conveniently forgets, the complexities of the situation. And you know, on the novel or from the ninetys onwards, nato sec sales towards expansion. And that have last ever, whenever any government in kia makes a step towards the west, the alarm bells go off to moscow. This is also one of the rushes narrative about natal eastern expansion. Russia has been cleaned in for years to false information that bush was promised. That if the so we had block disband, old natal would not expand east. So now we know that was quite a mean and actually not true, but russia. Russian official. Clean to this and repeat that nice to this day. You almost gonzales sure. Of the situation is quite clear. The bad guy in this situation is russia because ukraine is an independent state which lives its own life guy. It doesnt attack any one. It doesnt bother anyone while russia is creating a constant threat near a border, we are simply unlucky with the neighbor who is constantly claiming its rights over our territory, our future, our line. Let me put it this way when there are 2 parties. The truth does not always lie in the middle. Sometimes one party may completely mislead in glowed enough for now much a point in mind. Or one side conditioned for in this so called hybrid war, kiev is outgunned on both front. It cannot match muscles, military strength, the more than 100000 Russian Troops gathered on or near the border. And it cannot compete in the information was not with the tools the kremlin has at its disposal with information disseminated on russian news channels. And on social media. Last year, the government in kiev removed 3 pro russian news channel owned by a local businessman from the ukrainian airway. And its set up Government Departments to combat this information online. But this information war is a mismatch. After these to be channeled were blocked, russia is relying more on social media once again. This includes facebook, but also most importantly, telegram messenger, which is an important source of information in ukraine. Last year. Ukraine security. Sarah, with published proof that russia is behind a network of anonymous telegram channels and with around 500000 subscribers. And this information often has nothing to do with reality. Its just reflects what the russian intelligence once the koreans to believe and sat. There are also true factories and so called bull spreading fake news, claiming that the u. S. Is to blame and that they want to threaten russia via ukraine. Get. The idea is that russia is under attack and it is only protecting itself. One of the platforms were rushing disinformation is being spreading. Ukraine is youtube. We still failed to understand why its algorithm allows this to happen. If this Information System is big incompetent, different spheres, and the media is just one part of that. Thats all this i just think of t eco system with this in for my 2 boys, mostly working along the primary platform broadcasting pro russian, talking points in ukraine is nash tv owned by a political player. You have hand right. What i have came up and a u. K. Intelligence report that was recently leaked perhaps, strategically to the british meeting. That report alleged russia was planning and invasion and acute that the kremlin also planned to install moore. I f to lead a pro russian puppet regime in key. Yes. He would be an odd choice. Given the authorities in moscow have slapped mariah with sanctions and wont even let him into russia. Theres only really 2 theories in my mind. The 1st theory is that the British Intelligence are just so bad at this stage that they dont actually do any spying at all. And all they do is propaganda, you know, on a 2nd pause and that there ukraine expertise is so weak that they just picked this random guy without checking Fact Checking at all. Or does the russians perhaps planted this with the British Intelligence for a laugh, just to make them look stupid . Its very possible. It is not very realistic. But it is definitely possible because if we take a look at russias play book in 2014, when russia to color crimea, it established a gay external as the so called Prime Minister of crimea c. C. Yeah. And a solo was a really, is not very popular regional politician. So the same scenario could be in works for a ukraine government. Ah, nato is a military alliance whose members arent always on the same page. Politically, that is evident in the headlines being generated on this conflict in the us compared to more diplomatic noises coming out of European Countries like germany. Because while nato has expanded to the east, russian influence has expanded to the west. Many nato countries in europe have grown dependent on Russian Energy exports to heat their homes drive there and faced with the pro suspect of being cut off midwinter, some of the cold war rhetoric that used to come out of those governments that melted away, which does not bode well for you, you can see why a one sided narrative emerges here. Its russia that has 110000 troops. Its russia that has the apples of why are we here . The question becomes much more complex. Its because the rest of the world bodies rushes oil by russian gas that was created the power which is harnessing. Right . That is the reality of the europeans in particular have to face because 40 percent of gas that they input comes from russia. This is a situation where i weigh that much more dependent on each other than we were in the period of maximum tension in the cold weather us. Its also less its, thats why its up to everyone to decide whether the world will remain a safe place or if it will be guided by so cause other interest. As for a counter propaganda system, an apparatus like the rushing propaganda machine. We dont have it here in ukraine. Russia is constantly trying to bring ukraine back into the orbit of its influence. Ukraine doesnt want to return to that. And that is the choice of the majority of the ukraine and the last time the Israeli Government tried it. It failed, but its taking another shot at funding and organization designed to push back globally against bad p r. Actually, robbies, here with the details thats righted these really government has signed off on spending a 100000000. 00 shekels that over 30000000. 00 over the next 4 years to fund concert. An initiative to quote, fight the phenomena of d, lead to my zation against the state of israel, and be civil legitimacy in the world. Will be the rising tide of damaging headlines and critically News Coverage of israel. The efforts of bts, the palestinian lead, boycott divest, and sanctions movement. Spotlight state orchestrated climes have been effective in shifting western public opinion, the palestinians with that sounds like a stated strategy to remove palestinians from East Jerusalem to make this also be in a steady stream of negative news reports on violence and abuse. By the way, the army and the cyber tech company, and a soul that created the surveillance malware. Pegasus thats been used against rights activists, journalists, and dissidence. In many countries. The government of nestali bennett wants to push back against all that. And the plan is to have influences activists and organizations from around the world, especially from the united states, recruited by concert to counter them additive and push state approved messages across Media Outlets and social networks. The idea isnt entirely new. Its the 2nd attempt at running a joint Public Private venture to try what israel cause consciousness shaping and the funding from the government is just half of whats needed matching funds. Another 30000000. 00 are to be raised through donations from private individuals and Civil Society. That private participation is important. Contract required so that it can be classified as a non governmental body. Otherwise, under us law, the influences concord recruits would be declared as foreign agents. That is, agents on the payroll of these really government. The last time this project was attempted, suicide groups in israel called it essentially anti democratic. It also flopped because of a lack of private donations. So well be keeping an eye on this will be following the money. Thanks. Dont look up is a movie about the Climate Crisis that somehow does a more effective job of highlighting the problem than most news outlets do. The films producers had an allegorical approach. They took the ecological breakdown and transformed it into a comment on a collision course with planet earth. The early streaming numbers make dont look up the 2nd most successful film netflix has ever made. But its Getting Better reviews from scientists than from film. Critics, perhaps, in part because at the films core is a critique of the 4th estate news outlets that have failed their audiences on an existential story. David sir rhoda is a journalist and political activist who co produced the film well hear from him shortly. But 1st, a scene from dont look up and the set of a morning news show that its fictional yet somehow familiar resolution. Its somewhere between 6 and 9 kilometers across, so it would damage the, the entire planet. Not just the house, you know, the entire planet. Ok. Well as the damaging will it hit this one house in particular . Thats right on the cars to new jersey. If my ex wife out the needed to be it, can we make or be not being clear . Were trying to tell you that the planet is about to be destroyed. Well, at sam, you know, the something we do around here. We just keep the bad news light saved, serrado. Welcome to the listening post a critique of the Mainstream Media, just keeping it the light runs more or less throughout. Dont look up. But from what i understand, thats kind of where the film got its start. So walk us through how the idea for dont look up, came about sure. I was talking to adam mckay, the filmmaker, director of the movie after he had made the movie vice. And i said to him, you know, you really gotta use your superpowers of filmmaking. And comedy to do something about the Climate Crisis. And he said yeah, you know, ive been having trouble figuring out how to tackle that issue in a way thats not a kind of mad max post apocalyptic dystopian kind of dark movie. He and i were lamenting about how the media doesnt really cover the Climate Crisis in a way thats adequate. And at one point i said, you know, kind of feels like theres an asteroid headed towards earth and nobody really cares. And he said, you know, maybe thats the movie. And of course, what you stumble on when you game that out is you, scientists who might have a difficult time getting the message out, getting the science out, getting the facts out inside of a media world. That isnt necessarily all that interested in verifiable scientific facts. News outlets and consumers devour stories that move quickly. The problem of Climate Change is it does not, dont look up deals with that by effectively creating an allegory, hitting fast forward turning Climate Change into a speeding comet. But journalists dont have that luxury. So what can they do . Well, i think 1st of all, i think Climate Change is accelerating in a very, in a very profound am terrifying way. So i think actually, unfortunately its becoming easier and easier to, to cover because the effects are so intense. I also think that climate isnt just about droughts, floods, and the like a Climate Change is going to be about really everything. I mean, heres the thing. The news media puts the economy at the center of its coverage. The economy is not a story. The economy is part of every story. So part of what were talking about here is that climate has to become part of the way we tell stories in our world, because it is part of the fabric of news throughout the world. Part of dont lookups, appeal is that youve taken a serious subject, but the film is a comedy, is part of the difficulty that news outlets have in engaging news. Audiences on the Climate Crisis is that the news is often so depressing. Some kinds of climate coverage can make everything feel hopeless and that its just a story of gloom and doom and theres nothing really that an audience can do wrong. So just how versus incredibly frightening piece titled the fuse has been blown and the doomsday. Glacier is coming for us all which yikes. What we need to hear also is about the efforts to stop the crisis or at least mitigated in a lot of ways. Those are, those can be compelling stories because its in many of the stories. Its the classic story of good versus evil, private interests versus the public interest. So i, i dont think theres a shortage of ways to tell compelling stories about this crisis. I think there is a potentially a shortage of vision of imagination in a news media that has gotten used to telling stories one way and no other way. A few years back we spoke with a climate specialist. He told us that he doesnt think governments are the primary obstacles in dealing with Climate Change. He thinks news outlets are, are youve worked on both sides of that street. So how do you see it . Oh boy, its a good question. I look at. I think i think theres a not one factor here and why we havent acted on climate. We live in a society where the way we think about an issue like climate is disproportionately dictated by whether its Political Leadership war, large corporate Media Outlets that have deep ties. To the industries that are creating the crisis, whether it is the fossil fuel industry, buying politicians, or the fossil fuel industries, spending a huge amount of money on advertising that essentially bank rolls Major Corporate Media Outlets. That is creating a framework for the way we talk about Climate Change that essentially has a thumb on the scale, the fossil fuel thumb on the scale. And i think what we need to do as human beings is realize that were going to need to actually make real changes in our Energy System in our food system, in our environmental policies. And that when, when politicians or media elites say that making those changes is unrealistic, or they, i role or they cy, those are the people who are the problem. Your film has been such a hit with audiences, but a lot of the reviews and the mainstream news media have been quite negative. Now you took a run at the media in dont look up. Do you think this is a case of sour grapes . Were you surprised at all that . Didnt that didnt surprise me at all . And it didnt surprise me because look, this is a movie about political issues. And when you make something as big as this movie is on, as big a platform as it is, youre going to get a passionate response. Some people are not gonna want to hear the message. I will also say that i think in the political space, some very powerful people have watches movie and probably it makes them uncomfortable. Can i go around saying to people that theres a 100 percent chance that theyre going to die . Is nuts. This is a movie that is attempting to say to millions and hundreds of millions of regular people in the world that we have a serious problem that the people at the top are creating, having been preoccupied with Climate Change 1st as a journalist, then having co produced a film about it, do you emerge from this process . More or less hopeful about the future of the planet . I mean, look, there have been times since this movie came out. That i have felt pretty down. That in some ways, i felt like in the highest regions of the media and politics, that this movie has prompted people to performative lee behave as if they are in the movie itself. In other words, that the movie has held up a mirror to it political and media elites and hasnt necessarily prompted a re evaluation or new behaviors or even contemplation. Then again, ah, the huge Audience Response to the movie is entirely inspiring. Clearly, there is a demand for us to Start Talking about real truths. And theres that scene in the movie that i think about a lot. Its in that rant with, with leonardo dicaprio, and he says, who do we dont do yourselves . How do we fix it . We should have deflected this comment when we had the chance we didnt do it. And to me, thats a very hopeful message. Is this movie isnt prophecy. Your destiny. Its cautionary, and you have a character in the movie, basically saying there is a way for us to have dealt with this. And so my hope is that this is not a flash in the pan. That the success of this movie will actually be a longer Lasting Legacy of it provides opportunities for more climate coverage in the media and provides more of a, a Critical Thinking process among millions and millions of people in how they demand real action from their governments. And from their communities, david serrado, congratulations from making a hollywood film that succeeds where Mainstream Media so often fails. And thanks for speaking to us here at the listening post today. Thank you. Thanks for having me. And finally, its one of the most under reported conflicts of the past decade. The war in yemen.
