Who were lined up at her outside at windsor costly william and catherine on the other side. But Prince Andrew, not here. We saw Prince Andrew where you were, how much of an issue with that have been if Prince Andrew had attended, then that would have been a decision that would be, would have been made at the highest level that would have been there would be the royal family is quite obviously very aware of the its public image and as a result it is very aware of the impact that it has that whatever decisions it makes with regards to its held public image. It is very aware of the impact that that is going to have on the members of the members of the public. Eights is difficult to know how members of the public would have felt about Prince Andrew being a amongst the group. Obviously if there are people who am i would have an opinion about, so the prince, andrew good or bad. So its very difficult to tell what kind of her reaction they would have had it will, as i say, be more interesting, i think from a political point of view to see where what happens, what involvement he might have in the future engagement engagements. If any, that might give a better indication of how the family is reacting to her to Prince Andrew, whether they feel that this is an opportunity or in the midst of morning to as i see, put differences aside and bring the family closer together. Or perhaps to feel that things have been set in stone and decisions have been made. And this is how things are going to be from now on. But is of course very difficult to try to 2nd guess the thoughts of what are going on in the heads of people, of course, who have just lost a mother and a grandfather, and whose primary concern at the moment as well as going through the official duties of course is to mourn Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. And its interesting that say, you mention family there, we can see harry and meghan getting a very warm reception from the crowds who are lined up in these pictures outside winter costs. I know theyre giving them floral tributes as well. And a son of the times, i suppose, i mean people cannot. She sign an online book of condolence now on the royal family website. And apparently therell be no physical books at ra residences, but any organization can open book of condolence or, and there will be opportunities apparently around the country in halls and cathedrals. But you can see that in many ways that theres, theres no way of stopping the public when it comes to giving tributes impromptu as it were. One of the, the things that has come across to, to us since who weve been here when weve been talking to people whove been coming here to, to pay tribute, is that people are prepared to make a distinction. But between how they feel about individuals in the royal family and their behavior and how they feel about them as representatives of a country. Its very interesting to, to hear peoples reactions to the news. Obviously the queens death, but also of the morning period of the family. The reactions of the family. People have been wondering how the family is hoping theyve been in. It is a sense of what it is, a family who have lost as a grandmother and a mother. And people have been very concerned about how the individual members of the royal family would be reacting to that. And i think that is very interesting because what it does is to indicate that people are prepared to see members of the well family as individuals. Not necessarily just heads of state or rulers of, of a country you, but are able to see them as individuals. And perhaps judge them by little, by their individual actions. What has been interesting, particularly here in stockinged, is to, for example, where the relationship between the vol family in scotland has always been extremely strong and circling the number of scots have been coming here to day in or do over the last couple of days in order to pay their respects has been very large. But this is of course, the country that has held a referendum with a view to, to separating yourself from the union of great britain. And it is also during the bags of referendum of a couple of years of a few years ago, was determined that 8 scotland would stay with europe, which was almost against what was happening across through the rest, the united kingdom. Nevertheless, people who perhaps would have made those distinctions about wanting to separate from, from the union or wanted to stay with with europe are perhaps, nevertheless still prepared to come and show their respect to the royal family and particular to Queen Elizabeth the 2nd because they regard them as in a more individual way, rather than seeing them as intrinsically tied in with great been written and particularly with the politics that are carried out in westminster, which are very much can be at odds with the politics that would be carried out in scotland. So its very interesting to see the way that people are reacting to the members of the royal family on a personal basis as people that they feel that they know. Particularly of course that was something that has come across with regard to how people are reacting to the death of Queen Elizabeth. The 2nd it was, she was somebody that so often people say that they felt they knew that they felt that they were close and that she embodied values that they wanted it to uphold them themselves. But they were able to regard that as a, as an independent age, as independent of any political affiliations within the country itself. Or within i did, the queen stands for example as a head of state. And were watching her, william and, and catherine hay with the catherine collecting flowers, many flowers been given by members of the public can, weve seen that to make and also with those flowers, we understand that sir m a moral Flower Garden will be created in londons green park on saturday and will be the main designated place for laying flowers near Buckingham Palace. But how significant is this kind of interaction for the role of fun of the prince and princess of wales . Now, Going Forward when im one of the things i think that that struck many people was when maam king charles the 3rd and the queen consort were making their way to Buckingham Palace um, just a day or so ago when the vehicle that they were in was stopped outside the palace gates and they got out and did a walk about 8 seemed spontaneous. It perhaps had been planned, but it certainly seemed spontaneous and it delighted the crowd. And it in many ways gave the kind of personal contact with their new king. But perhaps in previous years may not have happened. Now, the younger members of the royal family are much more open to having a personal contact with the public. Theyre much more used to it as well. But of course, Prince Charles too, is, has years of experience of doing public engagements and meeting members of the public and meeting people from all over the world, from so many and cultures. And in many ways, one can understand that as a result, he would have a much more relaxed attitude, shall we say, are much more casual attitude in terms of wanting to be able to meet members of the public. But then, of course, we see his children and his grand children who will, will be much more in tune with modern times. Theyll be much more or fe with social media and media generally, and how people react and build perhaps be much more in tune as well. With the warp and weft of social mores and social ideas and they are therefore much more prepared to im comfortable with meeting members of the public. But i would imagine also that they are extremely conscious of how important that kind of contact is. 2 members of the public that there is a narrowing if you like, with the gap between members of the public and the, the royal family, which in some other countries can be quite distant. But they realized that there are the benefits that there can be of narrowing that gap and becoming closer to the people of the country in which they will absolutely you say, to become closer to the people we, sora king charles, her shaking hands with the public at her buckingham panis again, in an apparent impromptu walk about this too is, is happening as well. We, we can see the, a prince and princess of wales interacting. And we have seen her in megan as well. And thats the 1st time that the princess of wells, and meghan, have been this close to each other for quite a while. Im, theyre not talking to each other at, but they are talking to all the crowns on both sides who are lined up. Thousands who are lined up outside. I think her were going to were cross now to Buckingham Palace to thanks very much for that sir. Were matheson now were going to back in patterson. James base. Arent you fanatic . Editor james, what do you make of this, sir . Very public walk about well, its interesting because when you have that some 24 hours ago that address to the nation apply the, the new king, king charles, the 3rd. He made a point of mentioning his son that who is, is no longer an active member of the royal family, prince harry and megan, and said that they were pursuing their new life overseas. Well, that i think was an olive branch of a show of family unity trying to in this new reign, put the divisions to one side. And we know that has been a very tense relationship between Prince William and his younger brother. Of this, i think, is a visual demonstration of the unity of the royal family and the fact that they are shared these, these 2 grandsons in grief. I, as their grandmother has died, they came out in 2 separate cars. But they then looked at the flowers together, a show unity and now are spending quite some considerable time. A speaking, speaking and chatting to members of the public. Im worth telling you to the Prince William who you see here in the last hour or so put out a statement on twitter about his grandmother was perhaps remind you of some of the, the words the world lost, an extraordinary leader whose commitment to the country, the realms of the commonwealth was absolute. I, however, have lost a grandmother. She was by my side, but my happiest moments and she was by my side to the side is of my life. My grandmother famously said, grief was the price we pay for love. All the sadness will feel in the coming weeks will be a testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary queen, all no memory by supporting my father, the king. In every way i can the words of Prince William who you are seeing on the screen. Right now, speaking to some school children, some, some, some of the younger mourners who gathered wins a car. So just give you a bit of joke coffee. Im in the center of london in Buckingham Palace, where the Main Business of the royal family is done. Thats where the Queens Office was and thats where the king charles is. Office will be windsor though is just outside london on the, on a good day when the, when theres not any traffic taking, not much more than 20 minutes drive to get there. And that is the preferred residents near london for the royal family. They think of that more as home. And that is where both prince, william and prince henry and the wives Prince William, now promoted to that title, was given to him by, by the king 24 hours ago to the prince of wales. The title that king charles had until just a few days ago, where we can see the continuing pictures there. Royal, we can see the prince and princess of wales now talking to the members of the public and the children looking very relax. Windsor, as we heard there just to the west of london, it slices smooth area fountains of keeping you can see here will be hacked into very smooth areas. Im james, were just going to go back to you then, and let me ask you, what are the particular challenges that the monarchies facing now in terms of modern britain and is this kind of thing. We can see here. Now re chatting and talking and being relaxed with members of the public, perhaps an attempt to address that yes, i think so. Um youve had a queen who has rules and been respected by many probably most in this country for 70 years up. She was a 96 year old woman. How did she appeal to the Younger Generation in this country . I think there was respect. I think she was seen as the nations grandmother, on some cases, the nations great grandmother. But the monarchy, if its going to survive and continue and thrive, has to show there is a Younger Generation, theyll be some, ill be watching the arrival of another relatively old king who will be saying, well, that doesnt really relate to me. But i think what king charles is going to do is going to keep a real role in the limelight for, for, for Prince William, the prince of wales and his wife kat. Katherine the prince princess of wales because they know they, they are young. They have very Young Children who just this week went to their new school near windsor a, a Prince William now living in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Hes moved out of london. And i think this is trying to get the more the key to appeal to a Younger Generation. And certainly they are spending plenty of time talking to those people. And it just seems to me and youre seeing the pictures and im glancing at the screen down here. The Prince William particularly seems to be a bit, be seeking out the kids and chatting with the kids. This a father who has some as, as 33 Young Children of himself as he continues this long walk about in windsor near Windsor Castle was telling you that it, i think it is very significant for those that watched the wall family very, very closely. That prince harry and Prince William are doing this together. This untold is the closest theyd been seen together since. Prince harry decided with his wife megan to up sticks and move to the United States and basically relinquish his royal duties. Well, hes fac right now to pay tribute to his grandmother, and i think to show support to his father as he takes on this very, very challenging role in these. You mentioned her, their grandmother. Thats an interesting makes of atmospheres at the moment. A kind of celebratory mood for the u hain. And that so ration very much in a relaxed way outside, at windsor crossing and along that path thronged with thousands of people. But also it comes out of time of morning for the queen i. Its interesting that many it was the young queen carried out her 1st state opening of parliament back in 9052 and her coronation was held at Westminster Abbey in 1953. It seems so long ago. And yet here we are to day, still looking at the monarchy, i suppose, thriving in this kind of atmosphere. How much james, do you think it is very much a sense of continuity . Well, its all about continuity really, because without continuity, you dont have the survival of this thing called the monarchy. Which if you look at it on paper and look at it logically in modern times, and in a modern democracy like the u. K. Perhaps doesnt make sense, but it is something where the king now before the queen for 70 years, was above the political fray and gave that stability. And that unity to the country and get gave something that wasnt polarized by politics, particularly in the u. K. As we see things now, because you k politics in recent years has been a really, really tense and tough the battles between the political parties, particularly the battle over breck city, in this country, which was, was so hard force and was very, very close referendum. And people are still divided on it, and there are big divisions between the political parties. And remember, as you see these scenes of pageantry and these seems a commemoration done in this very traditional way that they do in the u. K. Probably better than anywhere else in the world. This is the country thats going to go through very hard times of becoming months. There are going to be problems with those energy prices. The economy is really biting. Inflation is really biting. This i think is something the government will be looking at as well as the royal family thinking about the continuity, the role family, the government will be thinking about this and the way the tone this sets for the country. And it could go one way or the other. I mean, it could go, you know, too much pageantry at a time of national austerity. Or it could be, this is a way to lift the spirits of the country and let them forget about that tough economic times. And i think both are all family and the government. And it was interesting that we had a meeting today between the new ing and the Prime Minister and cabinet will be trying to set that tone for the way forward for this nation. Its a nation that has such a rich history, and youve seen it to day. Youve seen those people in somewhat ridiculous clothes. You could say, if you look at it as an outsider, you see the trumpets of the bugles. Youve seen all the marching taking place. How does that fit with a bottom britain . I think what they want to do is build on that history and make that the bedrock for a country that can continue to move forward. When indeed, these are quite extraordinary pictures. I dont think we seen this kind of walk about the very public way for for years. And of course, harry and megan, who he saw earlier, they chose to give up their royal roles in 2020 g to what prince harry at the time described as unfair me to intrusion into his family, especially his or his wife. And yet, they seem just as ought to know today here as they ever were. Yeah, i mean its worth reminding you the history of this thing will walk about. Because its not something that used to happen in the old days. And it certainly didnt happen at the beginning of Queen Elizabeth rain, but she had to get around the countries of the commonwealth. Remember shes not just was not just the queen of the k. Shes the queen in 14 of the territories. And she made visits. And when she made visits, she needed to, to, to meet as many people as possible. And there was a real demand for the people to see her and to get flowers to her. And so she invented the walk about. But then whats really interesting is we see prince harry again chatting and laughing with people. It was his mother and Prince Williams mother, Princess Diana, who really protected the walk about. And that some of that charm that you saw in the mother. Youll certainly saying now in both the 2 boys as they work this crowd, they seem to be enjoying it, but this is that work. They work this crowd and try and shake as many hands in exchange as many greetings of people as possible. What for them . Remember, is such a difficult time, a time of real grief when theyve lost that beloved grandmother when the father is thrust into this very, very challenging ro. Yeah, and i mean, how much of this, this kind of pouring that we can see here and how its coming across is extraordinary. But how much of this kind of walk about would be about the queens popularity and the queens legacy . And how much is about the younger boils actually in their own right . Because not everyone is supportive of the family. So how do they fit in with that . Well, i think i was telling you, we didnt know this was going to take place. This was not announced that this was going to happen. So its pretty certain to me that the people who got there to lay there flowers of the people gathering here a Buckingham Palace to pay their respects and late late lay their floral tributes and come here and be here. They were here for her majesty the late queen to spend to send their respects. And i think thats the message having spoken to some of the people here, thats the sort of message that the, the prince, harry and Prince William and their wives will be getting from the crowd there. Busy in windsor, they will be talking about the queen and the memories of the queen. But clearly having these 2 young royals there, i think, creates a sense of unity and, and a bond which clearly is going to touch those people who have met them today. And it will, im sure, have a profound effect on, on, on the, on, on, on, on the youngsters that have met the 2 princes to day. I could remember as a young boy being there and beating the queen or to walk about it has an effect on you. I can tell it. And in fact, we remember those of us were old enough that back in the year, the ninetys, the year, the royal family faced a number of challenges and, and criticism sir. It was in 1992 that 2 the queen referred to as the royal palace, honest herbalists, which in latin means are a year of disaster or misfortune. When Prince Charles at the time as he was and his wife, dinah princess, well separated. As did Prince Andrew in his why sarah duchess of york at the time so and also a fire dotted red sleep at Windsor Castle. Where these, these 2 young rules that we can see here are meeting the crowd. So its been something of a time in history. Oh, absolutely. I remember that. Yeah. Well, because i was actually covering the oils. I was based, you cable costs and i covered the rolls not. Was there windsor at the time of that far . Yes. The answer. Horrible is clearly the very low point of, for the queen as well, a personal note, the low points of those 70 years. And of course, these were just Young Children at that time and box they are hoping, despite the difficulties between these 2 brothers, which has been the molten soap opera tabloid story of the oils that certainly sells. Lots of newspapers here in britain and, and brings lots of traffic to lots of websites, not something we normally talk about, much or now or not something we cover much. But they that today, together showing perhaps they are prepared at this time agreed to put that to one side and that and those the scenes i think may to some of those around the world be so was but i think in the u. K, they will have a big, big effect. The fact that the unity to shows in the family and the hope and you heard it in some of the statements in the house of commons yesterday, particularly from the leader of the opposition kiss tama, the hope that the queens spirit of lets Work Together lets thats unify, let soul things together that that spirit in the family may have an effect on the country and maybe even beyond the country because these pictures and everything thats happened since the queen died is clearly reflecting all around the world. In every country. There has been a response to this, and of course, as i say, shes the leader of oh, so the queen was the leader of 14 all the countries. The king now is the leader of 14 other countries as well as the u. K. And much wider afield. He is now the head of the commonwealth and looking at that history through the years, i think it was 2002 that via queena celebrated 5th 5th her 50th year on the throne as part of her Golden Jubilee events and events were held throughout sir a commonwealth including several days of festivities in london and beyond. And i remember that later the that the public or collaborative of the role of family rebounded somewhat. Ah, even with charless as it was that time, 2005 master Camilla Parker bowles, which found a good degree of support among the british sher public. How optimistic then, given all of that in that history, that timeline, how optimistic would the royal family be feeling now . And they look at these kind of pictures and the kind of reaction theyre getting from the public. While i suspect the immediate members, the royal family, the people youre seeing here now, Prince William, prince harry, arent really thinking about things like that. They know that got to do this, this a sense of duty. Im sure theyre getting feedback from these people that is giving them some comfort, the memories theyre getting from people here talking about the queen and what the queen meant to them. But yes, the courtiers in the palace will be pleased about these scenes. And i think in the fullness of time when the grieving is over, so will the new king and those in a members of the royal family. Because i think this does show the continuity you mention, the new queen consort. I was here back in 1997 when Princess Diana died. That was very different moment from where we are now because the queen was 96 years old. Princess diana was 36 years old and there happened so suddenly in a car crash. But are there was, there was that the crowd here at that time was very, very hostile, hostile towards us, the press. They blamed us the press, but hostile, very much towards camella and has been a complete rehabilitation of the queen consort in the years since. And she is a popular figure, it seems now and indeed we can see megan and harry that meeting those members of the public who have come to offer condolences but also a celebratory mood with the new king charles. And that proclamation that we saw earlier today. But this an extraordinary walk about impromptu walk about at sir Windsor Castle by the prince and princess of wales and marian megan as the royals attempt to move on in the morning and the celebration of the newton its 17
