Oh, i dont towards the altar, late queens children and grandchildren accompanied now are their spouses and her great grandchild, georgia child we gather from across the nation from the commonwealth. And from the nations of the world, some 500 foreign dignitaries were in the abbey to mark this moment, including the queens 14th us president and 15th british Prime Minister, whom she invited the former government just 2 days before her death. Ah. But above the politics, shed been clear that the service should full most on her constant christian faith. It featured the favorite in the lord is my Shepherd Service in life. The in herald, in a 2 minute silence observed across the country before the queens piper broke the state close to 4 days. The people had been a spectacle as they queued and file past the queens coffin. Now they were still witnessing an extraordinary spectacle on spool before them the parade of hundreds of servicemen and women from the u. K. In the commonwealth. Over the course of 70 years. Queen elizabeth the 2nd came to embody the idea of monarchy in this country, a symbol and a person woven into the fabric of daily life. For those here now on the streets outside, buckingham palace, a last chance to say goodbye, transferred to the state, hers the coffins. Progress slowed again as it neared wind to cancel. So long, meticulous planning. This was a day of undeniable beauty that images grand and intimate insides in georgia chapel the service of committal british history, separated into royal ages, the jacket b in the george and the victorian each defining a particular time a particular society. The merciful goodness of the lord and jury for ever and ever. The 2nd elizabeth an age was so long and so such change it seems to defy that kind of definition. It is now, though ended the queen load into the royal vault. Ah, days ago he would have done this, and now its sung for him. Later away from the cameras would come the final burial service. Closest family lane, tourists and matriarch alongside her husband, r e for just 0 london was now discuss the queens reign in the wider context of the commonwealth and how britains legacy is seen in countries that were once colonies and its empire. An arab and in caisson is associate professor of the department of African American studies at Princeton University and she joins us now from princeton in new jersey. And im so glad to have you with us today. And i think the timing of this is right as well. For the past week, you and i have watched millions upon millions of people more in the queen. You look at this, perhaps a little differently from most mourners. Tell us, tell us how you look at this. Thank you so much for having me. Yes, im not historian. And so im looking at this very, in terms of the history of british and how are presentations of monarchy has been, have been created and produce and speculated historically and also how those representations still live today. And one of the things i think is really clear to me in that long history is that you can disconnect the monarchy from its relationship to the histories of empire. So, so are you, are you saying that when people more in the queen you feel that theyre also somehow acquiescing to the brutality of the British Empire . I think theres a difference obviously between i kind of personal morning and the sort of tech no relationships that people have had constructed around their relationship with the queen. Well, i think what im talking about is the way that the coverage of the queens death and the funeral have sort of occluded this long history of the, of the crowd. Of the monarchs complicity with and reliance on histories of empire on the violence of empire. And refills extraction that was, you know, pot and possibly colonial processes. So what, what would you like to see then in the coverage less focus on the person and, and more explanation of what the British Empire was including its, its more somber pages. Yes, i think so. I mean, i, i didnt watch all of the funeral today and, you know, ive heard of it in an out of coverage, but there are plenty of voices from very britain and its for my former colonies from countries. And the one is now the commonwealth, who are writing about this history of the crown, intimate relationships with colonial expansion, with, with the ways that, that the crime has benefited from empire. And also with, you know, these communities and talking, continue have always talked about and reminded us that these legacies of empire continue with us now. So what does it tell us then perhaps that the, that the coverage wasnt so much focused on the historical aspect of this, or what you bring up and focused more on the passing of the person, the passing of the queen and the institution of the monarchy. I mean, i think that this is the coverage, it sort of reminds me again of, of the historical representations of the pump and spectacle of the crown that were transmitted across the empire vision and visual culture. But also in these types of professions and pageantry and starkly, they were ways of reinforcing colonial rule, favorable ways of kind of creating a sense of empire and a sense of connections. I think here what weve seen and so in some of this coverage is very mythologized, things of that, of the monarchy. But mythologized being the best, the 2nd. And its a mythologized thing that quite conveniently allows us to sideline these other histories, you know, may very stock moment of that was the fact that not long after the clean passed away, there were protests around the, the killing of a young, black british man, chris cobb, and you know that, that very real trauma was really kind of sidelined by, by all of this focus on, on, on the death of, of a monarch. I mean thats just one example. I think of how these, these kinds of this kind of coverage, this kind of attention becomes another way of cleaning these other, these other very real, very material realities and anna arab bindham caisson joining us from princeton. Thank you very much. Good to talk to you today. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Your has been a judge in the past to also said look, the should should be overturned info now, and he was overruled. So this is not the 1st time its been reconsider. So why now in part it is because of the serial that you referred to call the alibi which res, theory about the evidence presented in k. I can go into what the pod cast is, but you cant do it and i think its worth the prosecutors to look at this again. And when they did, they saw that a number of issues raised by the pod cast. Actually looked at somewhat sketchy. And that had to do with an alibi that was there, but not presenting. And it had to do with the timeline about how the murder was committed and when it was submitted. And the fact that were presented in the court and the timeline in the court did not match up. And this is something that my cat had brought in to the public consciousness. So actually very important. And if you asked about the timing, the, the timing did follow the pod cast and the reaction to the case on time to reach a case. It takes a long time. Its taking that long, but its taking even longer than that. When you look at the fact that there were doubt before that, and i think there were, there are many problematic thing about this can not just, it was brought up on the play catch it. Yeah, this is an incredibly long time. But you know, it takes a while for cases to go through the court and look at, took a lot, it take a long time to get prosecutors today.
