Its one of the few places where tibetan can live fully and how to pull down with when i come to canada or i from so many big building in toronto, there are so many migrant migrant from all over the world. Ah, my dad and mom, they exist from too bad. I was wanting india. I came to canada, 2012. This is my restaurant in logan corner. People come from all over toronto to eat my mother. When a 1st serve a moment to canadian, this, it was very good, and then they love to come again and again again and again with this is a little too bad and there are so many different restaurant. There is no competition. We are very, very friendly. That so many nearly about 11 or 12 restaurant who so to been food these food is not just a food. Im preserving my culture and tradition that it and making to read remote im making to been culture a life ah in. Ah, my father was a monk in 1959. A lot of monks left the monastery like my father did. And basically he became a warrior. When the dalai lama was escaping, he was one of the tale and guards that do up. Were just to make it difficult for the chinese to follow with the content. My mother was ripped out of tibet in her youth. Everybody was clean and said, you cant go back. There is no home anymore. Oh its been just a year since i live in canada. I left 2 beds and i was 7 years old with my parents and siblings. The have to basically walk from to about to nepal and to the very mountainous terrain switches so filled with the on ice and snow. It took almost like 3 weeks to the or so minutes about and school couldnt reach because of the frost bite and to some people that even died in india, napoleon badani the to button people that they dont have any status. Theyre not getting much jaws. They are not entitled to own any kind of properties, land houses. So because of that, they started to coming to abroad like different western countries, including canada. Veterans were invited to come to canada and the 9th and seventies. Only 240 came i was lucky enough that 2 of them were my parents. Families like mine were put into rural areas. People were very nice, but we didnt speak english. Money was hard. I felt like i belonged, but i felt like i was different. The children couldnt get the opportunities the needed in a town of 16000. So i moved here. I was 18 years old park till at that time there were lots of people with, you know, begging for money. You know, the homes are economical and it became like a center because we had no Community Center at that time to get in from actually hope the community become better and contributed to jobs. Opened up stores. So everybody is looking to go somewhere. I feel like they belong. If you go to park deal, that is what you see, that community of a bunch of people that are going to welcome you. I was referred to to back to the lady who was so walking into bog down into a culture a suspicion. And she has helped me in fitting the forms and applying for department to residency and canada my the future application would approve and the november of 2021. I would like to stay in canada until today but become independent. And on wednesday, i can give full script in the day in by, you know, my parents, they are in the ball got monday. So i, i, im all alone in this country. I dont know many people over here. So because of that, sometimes you feel very lonely in this country. If the pop deal and the Tibetan Community is not here in canada, then definitely my life will be much more difficult and much more on the i think, seeing them longs seeing those old people. Those are the citing those peers. Its just reminds me who i am and where i belong panel. We were the 1st immigrants refugees that work to, to build it for the other refugees to come here. Every generation after they lose a little bit of would like to be to bed and we need them to hear from the 1st people that came me this center has been one of the central spaces for to buttons to just gather, introduce me around your own people without culture, i personally feel like there is like a really big part of you thats missing the we have been reading dance classes and 2 been language classes. I probably 5 years now in total. Ive been teaching, threatened traditional dad lose a lot of the ways in which we preserve our cultural identity is, is by learning it is by making sure its preserved, making sure that its an active culture and were not talking about it as if its disappearing. The song and dance is that are being performed are being accompanied by this instrument. This is called a dummy and you call it in english. Its like a sick strings loop. The biggest difference between this and a western guitar is that there arent port, we play them. Usually along with the melody, the button. We are not a monolith. There are so many different regions, so many different dialects, so many different styles of dancing. And for me, its really important to make sure that im doing my best to introduce the children to all of the the last couple of years in parkville events from all walks of life, all ages joined together in the high schools who practice and performed or shifting the course if you translate that directly into english, literally circle music. And i think its like a really meaningful way for Like Community to dance together. If you ask me to go to the gym for 20 minutes, ill be exhausted and ill just like, ill lose motivation. But i can dance for like 5 hours straight without sitting down one. When i den, 1st and foremost against myself, because this is the way that i connect with my ancestors. And as i dance for myself, it becomes a part of the community. I was born in nepal. I moved to canada with my dad and my brother in 1999. So i was around 6 years old at the time. I think there is this really deep desire to belong. And i think when something is taken away from you, it like it becomes, it becomes down much more important. And so like, just the fact that i cant go to bed. Its something that i care about so much and like to answer your question, simply like why do i do it . Its just because i love it. Its something that makes me feel human. It makes me feel whole. Art is definitely form of activism and resistance for tibetans inside and outside to the chinese governments main sort of strategy to get rid of tibetans is to remove us from our culture. Mm. With this is how we honor buttons inside of to best by continuing this part of our culture. This is tim. Mm hm. Oh my friend i, weve known each other for so long and in our community. She is the youngest board member ever to be a part of that threatening canadian Culture Centers board. Ever since weve just kind of been there is biggest hi girl going through life together and continuing to find ways to like 40 to other. And im just really blessed to have her in my life and im forever grateful. A since the age of 13, i shared volunteering with various organizations be, is that related or human rights related . I am why and because of my community, they have made me who i am and till the last breath i will be working to serve these communities at marley park, dell is a mix of very affluent houses. But along with that, there are many high rises, which is many tibetans and immigrant communities live there. So many inequities that exist within our society, and especially in parkville, is quite obvious about Community Members that live at the margins of our society and are often forgotten. We realized that if nobody did anything that they would fall through the cracks twice a week, every tuesdays and thursdays i am able to be part of a huge network of Community Members that come together and deliver food to elders in our community. Miss senior, shes not home like that for home. Her and off to the next delivery. Its not a charity service. Were not here to save anybody. Were engaging in a communal effort to be there for each other to care for each other. Im with them on law. Oh, there they are. Okay, now we gotta go to that building. Next. Come on. When one is down, we make sure that we all Work Together to make sure that there are room i left over there say they are then alone. This is why i love our community because anywhere you go, you see your own people. And even if you dont know them by their name, you can say hi, hello, how your days going. And he started telling me about all the politics was happening in our exile community. And i was like, all these are asking me why you guys. And so its just nice sense of community belonging. You know, my uncle. So on, he was the 1st person that saw me when i was born. So i feel like i have a deeper connection with him. A lot of Community Members live the way my uncle does. You know, you often see beds in the living room where there is a huge altar and theres waterfall offerings. My uncle lives in the street where theres a lot of high rise apartment buildings that are subjected to gentrification and just absurd red types. I have been here since 2008. All right. Then in the rent used to be about 800. 00 per month from 20141516 ortz. They have raised to such an extent, like the monthly rent went up to 1750. 00 for just one bedroom. Was double, almost double. They want you to just move out of it. Im afraid that in the next 20 years, a little too bad might not be even existing in parkville, on a personal level that sucks specifically for the to been people. Weve been displaced so many times. And so, you know, id ask or where next with many tenants in ferndale, ive been displaced because of the courses of gentrification. Even on the street level where the businesses, we have seen a lot of the older stores that served immigrant needs disappear and it be replaced with more upscale, fancy restaurants, which most of the residents of punk down can afford. Ah, i was elected into office in 2018. It was a historic moment because for the 1st time a person of tibetan heritage was elected into a Public Office in north america. The overwhelming majority of parkville residents, our tenants, i ran on issues like better and improved housing. In november 2021. I put forward a proposal that will remove the incentive for landlords to evict tenants and increased their profits. Um government voted in town. Mm. Were seeing, trying to become a citizen for the feel, not for the majority working class, people who have, who built the city. I would question is pushing people out of their homes out of their communities. Progress parkville community. Legal services has been such an Incredible Organization working alongside tenants and supporting them in this fight against the big multinational corporation. Ah. Most of the buildings in park dale were built in the fifties and sixties. And ever since landlords have exploited tenants in park. But what weve seen happen more recently is that corporate landlords and financial entities have bought up the rental stock in park them. These landlords control upwards of 50 percent of all rental units in the neighborhood. Once the unit is vacant, there is no limit on how high the rent can be raised. So, doing aesthetic improvements to the buildings is one way that landlords price, long time tenants. Theyre allowed to pass these costs off on the tenants who have been living there. Other strategies that landlords use include neglecting maintenance and repairs in tenants units. The specific tactics that tenants have used in fights against evictions and rent increases include organized rent strikes where hundreds of tenants will withhold their rent payments until their demands have been met by the landlord. There is strength in numbers. The tenants on tindall avenue in parkville collected well over half of their neighbors signatures on a petition opposing the landlords bid to raise rent above the life. We walked over to a local rental office. The property manager of the building we were immediately locked out. I want to deliver a petition about the above guideline rent increase. Today theres no one in sight, allegedly except a petition that and so tenants are forced to pull their ground here in the lobby until somebody was already come and accept you like to me. I can pass over to or accepted on behalf of my property manager at your site. Yeah, this is what i want to formally give to you. Its in there. Its a petition. Ah, ah, im a regular at logos cafe and thanks for helping so many people. I would wager that the majority of logos customers are people who rent apartments in parkville. I think the fact is that tibetan people are essential workers in the economy of toronto. I dont think we can underestimate the social and human consequences of whats going on in the neighborhood. Ah, my hope is that it continues to be the place where everyone where they are in new color or whether you were born right in the neighborhood feels like they belong while were waiting for our real home where we belong, this is like what we have right now, and its something that a lot of tibetans are really quick before. Theres so much to learn from little to that. You know, our sense of community is our biggest strength. And so let us continue to be there for each other and rise together. Mm. So you might be says thats it. Then its been like the 5th and the everyday heroes keeping communities together. H p live, im good. Good. Send them one for them to my for a just 0 visits the canyon town of peter that produces some of the worlds fastest rubbish.
