Too few women planning pregnancy at enough fruit and veg, research suggests (Kirsty O’Connor/PA)
More than half of women trying for a baby, or planning one, drink alcohol while too few exercise, take folic acid or eat healthily, according to a new study.
Researchers found that many women hoping for a child lacked the healthy lifestyles that could lead to better outcomes for mother and baby.
In 2018, Public Health England (PHE) said women could make themselves fit for pregnancy through a healthy diet, regular exercise, taking folic acid supplements, looking after their emotional wellbeing and ensuring sexual health tests are up to date.
