The Gainesville Sun
Truth and reconciliation
Thank you to the Concerned Citizens of Newberry for the moving ceremony held Feb. 5 to honor the “Newberry 6” victims of lynching. Newberry is leading the way in bringing truth and reconciliation to Alachua County.
Gainesville will have a similar ceremony on Feb. 20 at noon on the west lawn of the County Administration building in Gainesville. Between 1868 and 1942, there were 12 known victims of lynching in Gainesville. We will say their names and speak the truth of what happened.
This event is outdoors and the community may attend (with masks and social distancing). It will also be live-streamed on the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project (ACCRP) Facebook page.
