More than the for-profit or non-profit perspective noted in Joanne Laucius’s article, the fundamental challenge in bringing a culture change to long-term care homes in Ontario is the mission-driven philosophy noted in the Long-term Commission’s report.
You need only look in Ontario’s own backyard to find outstanding examples where for-profit and non-profit homes have been champions in bringing culture change to their homes, an approach in which quality of care is understood as a relationship where residents, staff, families and volunteers are treated with dignity and respect in a homey environment.
