To prep for more in-person learning, N.J. school district doubles substitute teacher pay
Updated Feb 25, 2021;
The Wayne school district has more than doubled the daily pay rate for substitute teachers as it prepares for additional classroom instruction.
Permanent substitutes are now receiving $225 per day, with less-regular substitutes receiving $200 per day, according to Schools Superintendent Wayne Toback.
The new rates took effect Feb. 16, the same day that students resumed a hybrid classroom schedule following two months of all-remote learning. Wayne raised substitute daily pay from $100 to $150 in December.
Wayne is opening classrooms every Wednesday starting next week, eliminating a district-wide virtual learning day in place since September, as part of a gradual return tentatively scheduled to culminate April 19 with full-time, in-person instruction for students.
