Timaru swimmer trains for Cook Strait challenge

Timaru meter reader Raewyn Winsley is in strict training at Caroline Bay for her attempt at swimming the Cook Strait in March.
Raewyn Winsley has been churning up the waters of Timaru’s Caroline Bay for up to 40 kilometres over six days a week in preparation for her biggest challenge of swimming the Cook Strait.
The 51-year-old Timaru electricity meter reader has dreamed about crossing the challenging 26km stretch from the North Island to the South Island since she was a teenager.
Winsley's attempt aims to cross between the nearest points from Wellington’s Cape Terawhiti to Arapawa Island in Marlborough, or vice versa, depending on the currents.
