Brendan Fraser offers a sympathetic performance in The Whale, an adaptation of a play about a saintly 600-pound man who takes abuse selflessly. Aronofsky returns to the suffering of Requiem for a Dream and the biblical themes of Mother, Noah, and The Fountain, but without much insight to offer. Debuts in theaters Dec. 9.
