The re-unification of China began when Sui Wendi came to power in 581 and created the Sui Dynasty. Sui was able to successfully unify the North, reestablish a centralized beauracratic government, restore the tax base, and conquer the south, completely unifying the country. It has been said that Sui’s greatest accomplishment was that he was able to unite China under a single government after centuries of disunity. During his rule he also rebuilt the Great Wall of China, constructed the Grand Canal that connected the Yellow and Yangzi Rivers, and maintained peace with the bordering Turik tribes.
