The 1822 massacre of Chios by the Ottomans and the historical emigration from the island will be presented via on online lecture by Mr. Yianni Cartledge on Thursday 22 July, at 7.00pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.
During Greece’s fight for independence from the Ottoman Turks, some 100,000 Chiots were either killed, enslaved or displaced. Scholars of the Greek War of Independence have previously acknowledged the massacre was a pivotal moment in the war, although few have elaborated significantly on its long-term outcomes.
