The History of Policing in the United States Is About Controlling Black Lives

In the spring of 2019, I signed the contract for my first book. My intention, at the time, was to provide white Americans, in particular white Catholics, with a deeper understanding of the Black Lives Matter movement and its Black, female founders. I envisioned a book that would, gently and politely, challenge white Americans to step outside of their own privilege, discomfort and internalized white supremacy. 2020 changed all of that.
The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than 500,000 Americans. Millions have lost health insurance, jobs, savings, and their homes. Along with being disproportionately affected by this pandemic, Black and Latinx communities continue to face violence at the hands of armed police officers. In 2020 alone, more than 1,000 people died at the hands of American police officers. By the summer, anti-police protests erupted all across the United States. And as I was processing these tragedies and attempting to write my first book, my father and father in law got the virus. Friends lost relatives, jobs — and amid all that, cops were still shooting Black Americans and violence against transgender women and men was still rising.
