The shotgun slung over the shoulder readily identified him as Lucknow‘s most erratic yet brilliant citizen. Dr. John Hutchison Garnier gained wide notoriety as the area’s most accomplished physician, naturalist, playwright, and eccentric.
Garnier was born in Scotland probably in 1823. He claimed descent from a Scottish Catholic mother and a father descended from a distinguished French Huguenot military family that fled persecution in France. His bicultural upbringing made him fluent in English and French. He studied medicine at both the University of Dublin and in Paris.
