Editor's note: This story was written for the 30th anniversary of the Fiesta sniper shooting and originally appeared in the San Antonio Express-News on Sunday, April 26, 2009, with the headline, "The day madness went on parade; 30 years ago a gunman aimed his anger at Fiesta." The headline and story have been updated to reflect that this year, 2018, marks the 39th anniversary of the shooting.
