The "real life" horror movie franchise that began with The Conjuring, and has extended through spinoffs like the Annabelle, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona, has been more effective and memorable than most horror series. But the third Conjuring movie falls short. It’s the first Conjuring movie without director James Wan to give it striking texture and emotion, and replacement director Michael Chaves isn’t as innovative. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star. Now in theaters, and streaming exclusively on HBO Max through July 4.
