TWO MONTHS FROM TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER... THE CITY OF BURLINGTON... WILL OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZE JUNETEENTH... THE DAY CELEBRATES THE EMANCIPATION OF SLAVERY IN THE U.S. AND AS NBC5'S ZURI HOFFMAN EXPLAINS... PLANNING- IS ALREADY UNDERWAY RIGHT NOW (The right time is always the present time so we can't really go back and say so you can't go back and say we should've did it this time we should've did it that time right time is always the time I think the right time is always the time we get started) BURLINGTON'S DIRECTOR OF RACIAL, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND BELONGING- TYEASTIA GREEN... IS ááSO EXCITED FOR THE CITY'S FIRST EVER JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION... HAPPENING ON JUNE 19TH! THE DAY WILL BE áPACKED WITH EVENTS LIKE A GOSPEL BRUNCH IN THE MORNING... FOLLOWED BY DANCE PARTY AT CITY HALL PARK. WHEN GREEN STARTED WORKING FOR THE CITY LAST YEAR- MAKING SURE THE CITY RECOGNIZED JUNETEENTH... WAS HIGH ON HER TO-DO LIST. (SOT) (Q: how important is this celebration and recognition of Juneteenth) (It is extremely important...I notice a lot of people in Vermont do not know what to tell you this and that's that's not a good thing) JUNETEENTH- IS ALSO KNOWN AS "FREEDOM DAY" FOR FORMERLY ENSLAVED BLACK PEOPLE AND THEIR DECEDENTS. BACK IN 2008 THE STATE OF VERMONT BECAME THE 29TH STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO RECOGNIZE JUNETEENTH AS A STATE HOLIDAY. NOW- VERMONT'S LARGEST CITY... WILL ALSO OBSERVE IT TOO. AND YOU BEST BELIEVE- ááART... WILL PLAY A BIG ROLE IN THE FESTIVITIES. (SOT)(00:02:22:06) (People learn a lot people learn a lot through the arts it's Spurs curiosity and helps build community) BURLINGTON CITY ARTS IS CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR DIFFERENT ARTISTS... TO COMPLETE... AND DESIGN 4 DIFFERENT MURALS- ALL CENTERED AROUND JUNETEENT THEY'LL GO UP AT THE SKATE PARK PAVILION, CHURCH STREET, NORTH AVENUE AND PINE STREET ITS A PROJECT áTHIS COUPLE - IS REALLY EXCITED TO APPLY FOR. (SOT) (Burlington is showing a readiness for seeing more BIPOC representation in public art) THEY'VE BEEN COMMUNITY MURALIST IN VERMONT FOR MANY YEARS... RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROJECTS YOU SEE HERE... AND HERE... THEY KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT USING ART- TO PROMOTE SOCIAL REFORM... SOMETHING THEY'RE HOPING TO DO, IF THEY MOVE FORWARD WITH THIS PROJECT... (SOT) (using this mural to focus on our children the next generation to generation that will probably figure out all the chaos reliving it now these kids are very profound) AN EFFORT- BY THE QUEEN CITY
