Clean beauty is a trend that needs no introduction, but we suspect (and hope!) it’s not a fad that will disappear. But just because natural products have seen a surge in popularity, doesn’t make them any less bewildering or complex.
What actually makes a beauty product “clean” or “organic?” According to the Food and Drug Administration, “the FDA has not defined the term ‘natural’ and has not established a regulatory definition for this term in cosmetic labeling.” The same is true for the term “organic.” And while there’s no hard and fast rule one can follow when choosing which products to buy, there are ingredients and testing methods you can look out for while shopping for makeup, skincare, and more. Certifications like Ecocert, EWG, and NPA are great to keep in mind, though there are various other certifications that are common in the industry. As clean beauty becomes more accessible, many retailers have dedicated their businesses to selling “clean” products exclusively, making it simpler than ever to get your hands on clean brands.
