Aside from being a very good commercial law judge, Patricia “Paddy” Bergin had a reputation when she was on the bench for being a very capable administrator.
So when the Crown Casino inquiry started to reveal a company that was long on loyalty to James Packer but deficient on corporate process, it was always going to end badly.
“It would have been a red rag to a bull,” said a senior Sydney lawyer.
“An exceptionally capable woman –and a tough one” is how former NSW Chief Justice James Spigelman describes Ms Bergin.
