I remember going back and forth over what to wear to all the parties back home last Christmas. How visible to be, how comfortable to be, how
me to be. I’m from notoriously blue Massachusetts, home of marriage equality. But I knew my gender nonconforming version of dressing up for the holidays wasn’t going to look like anyone else’s at pretty much any holiday party I went to with my family. Plus, that I would be one of few—if not the only queer person at all of them. But I also knew I wouldn’t be comfortable unless I dressed like myself.
