An inch of snow has fallen on Nashville, so naturally we’re all asking ourselves some hard questions: Will I survive this? Will I ever be able to leave my home again? Was 12 loaves of bread too many? What should I do with these 16 gallons of milk? Will anyone ever love me? While you contemplate the deep mysteries of existence, why not tune into
The Bachelor? There is literally nothing else to be done in your life right now. This show is all you have left.
Before we dive into the episode, I’d like to acknowledge what’s been happening in Bachelor Nation over the past week or so. If you’re a person who actually has a life, you might not have heard what’s been going on off-screen this season. I have a little bit of a life (not much, but some) and I genuinely don't care about any of these people at all so I haven’t been paying that close attention either, but here’s the gist (I'm including a lot of links so you can read more about this yourself if you have the interest): In recent weeks, season frontrunner Rachael has been accused of racist and culturally inappropriate behavior and comments, including, but not limited to, bullying girls for dating black men, liking racist posts on social media, posting/promoting QAnon theories and Blue Lives Matter posts, and attending an antebellum party three years ago. An antebellum party is a thing that I just learned about where sororities and fraternities dress up as slave-owners and party at a plantation. Seriously. I have lived in the South off and on over the past 23 years, and it still manages to find new ways to surprise me with its aggressively racist traditions. Chris Harrison then defended this behavior to Rachel Lindsay — former Bachelorette and the franchise’s first Black lead — in the most arrogant, condescending, mansplainy way on her podcast. Many of the show’s previous and current BIPOC contestants issued statements about the franchise’s racist behaviors, Contestant Rachael finally issued an apology, Chris Harrison is now stepping down from the show for some indeterminate amount of time and Matt James is posting advertisements for Sam’s Club. If you want to read more about this, former contestant Sharleen wrote a detailed blog about it here.
