Alex Chang, the 49ers’ chief marketing officer, joined the team two years ago and immediately realized how popular the all-white versions of the uniforms were. The 49ers won both games in them during the 2019 season, including the critical regular season finale against the Seahawks, their first win in Seattle since the 2011 season.
The 49ers even wanted to wear the “all whites” in the Super Bowl but were denied by the league. They also won’t be able to wear an alternate uniform if they make the playoffs this season, per league rules.
When team officials began planning for this anniversary season, they didn’t struggle with the design process. If the white uniforms were smash hits, then the reds — uniforms in which the 49ers went 10-0 while wearing in 1994 and donned while trouncing the Chargers, 49-26, to win their fifth Super Bowl title — would be even more so.
