In the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz received calls to resign and ethics complaints. Cruz is also an attorney, and there’s an effort from lawyers and law students to disbar him. Late last year, Congress reinstated something that had been banned for more than 25 years – Pell grants for people in prison. Those federal funds for inmates had been cut in 1994 during the “tough on crime” era. Criminal justice advocates are lauding the move, saying it’s a step in the right direction for setting incarcerated people up for success once they re-enter society.
