There’s scant evidence that money in people’s pockets is holding our economy back.
This is partisan politics at its worst.— Joaquin Castro (@JoaquinCastrotx) May 18, 2021
The announcements took the Twittersphere by storm, with many Texas Democrat leaders and abortion rights advocates disagreeing with Abbott's actions. Dyana Limon-Mercado, executive director of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, the political arm of Planned Parenthood affiliates in Texas, told the Texas Tribune a six-week ban essentially bans abortion outright.
On the federal unemployment issue, San Antonio Congressman Joaquin Castro tweeted Abbott's action is "partisan politics at its worst."
"Texas' unemployment rate is still double its pre-COVID level," Castro wrote in a tweet Monday. "@GovAbbott's rejection of the $300 weekly federal jobless aid will hurt over 300,000 Texans. There's scant evidence that money in people's pockets is holding our economy back."
