Ted Cruz, byname of Rafael Edward Cruz, (born December 22, 1970, Calgary, Alberta, Canada), American politician who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 and began his first term representing Texas in 2013. He sought the Republican Party nomination for president in 2016. His father, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, was born in Cuba but fled to the United States in 1957 after being imprisoned by the Fulgencio Batista regime. Ted’s mother, Eleanor Elizabeth Wilson, was a native of Delaware. When he was born in 1970, the family was living in Alberta, Canada, where his parents worked in the oil industry.
