TCM celebrates Black performances

Of the many ways to mark Black History Month, Turner Classic Movies has an expected but relevant one.
Each February, the channel showcases standout work presented this year under the umbrella title “Noteworthy African American Performances.” The Jacqueline Stewart-hosted series will run on Wednesday nights and very early Thursday mornings throughout the month, and here's a look at some of the talents and attractions to be spotlighted.
“In the Heat of the Night” (1967; Thursday): Part of a full evening of Sidney Poitier features, this Oscar-winning mystery is one of the actor's top hits, the tale of a Southern murder investigation uneasily shared by a big-city homicide detective (Poitier) and a bigoted small-town sheriff (Rod Steiger, doing Academy Award-honored work). Under Norman Jewison's direction, the drama is as much social commentary as crime saga ... certainly proven by the legendary slapping scene.
