CHENNAI: A three-member gang of car thieves, who stole five cars worth Rs 69 lakh using duplicate keys, has been arrested by Maraimalai Nagar police on Sunday.
The trio pretended to be drivers who took cars on rent and used their work time to make duplicate keys.
The gang members were identified as Muruganandham, 54 of Trichy, Murugan, 47 and Venugopal Prabhuraj, 46 of Ambathur.
Following complaints from several car owners in the area, police intercepted them during a vehicle check. Muruganandham gave contradictory replies on being asked for the registration certificate of the vehicle. Police then seized his car and checked the documents which turned out to be fake. Interrogations with Murugandham revealed that he was part of a gang.
