'We should never underestimate the continued importance of the Opera House’ Picture: ROB CURRIE. (30267528)
INEVITABLY many forms of art and culture have suffered during the pandemic, but it is extremely depressing to read of the threats to the Opera House due to lack of funding.
The government has several millions of pounds to build the massive office blocks on, or near the Esplanade, and quite rightly, have many millions available for the new hospital.
Surely the sums needed to save the Opera House are minuscule by comparison? We have the Arts Centre, but an island with such a big population needs to have access to a wide range of cultural events – pantomimes, music, Shakespeare productions, live opera (from the Met in New York), to give but a few examples.
