I am becoming a fan of ospreys. Boulder County has set up a webcam pointed toward the nest of an adult pair of osprey as they are raising their young. The nest is in a safe place near the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. The setup uses a lightning rod, two lightning depression units and shielded cables to protect the setup from lightning strikes. The first osprey chick hatched at 7 a.m. May 25, the second chick hatched at 7 a.m. May 26, and the third chick hatched at 1 p.m. May 28. After ospreys hatch, they are called hatchlings. Within two weeks, they are called nestlings. And during four to six weeks, they progress to being fledglings. At about 50 days the young ospreys fledge or fly. They will stay at the nest a few more months as they learn to fish.
