Reading Public Library workers have heard many stories of patrons who would love to return to the library, but feel they can't because they owe long overdue late fees or never returned items.
So the library's four branches in the city and nine other libraries across Berks County are testing a pilot program that started June 1 in which late fees will no longer be charged, and which in many cases will help patrons to resolve past problems.
The library is now a "fine-free" operation for those who return their items before the 30th day from the due date, as they will not be assessed any late fees.
