In 2007, heavy rains inundated Whitewater State Park, causing about $4 million in damage. The sudden and destructive flash flooding damaged numerous bridges, washed out campsites, and washed away trees growing along the Whitewater River. The camp was closed to campers, and many trails were unusable for about 10 months.
Reopened in 2008, some areas have been changed forever by the 2007 flood. Others have been lost due to recurring flooding.
Minnesota’s climate is changing. The state is now seeing heavier and more frequent rains. At Whitewater State Park, that means more frequent flooding.
